FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU and coach Gary Patterson have agreed to terms on a long-term contract extension, according to two sources close to the situation.

TCU has called for a news conference at 11 a.m. ET Wednesday morning.

The sources both said part of the agreement includes pay increases for his assistant coaches....

Ultimately this is good for the conference and good for BYU. TCU has driven the level of competition way up in the conference and I for one am glad Patterson didn't sell out to a "big name" school. With TCU in the mix I see the MWC as a de facto BCS conference. The conference champ in the next few years will likely be whichever team of the big 3 can beat the other two, doing that without being ranked high enough to get a BCS bid would be an exception to the rule I think. The existence of Boise State does throw a wrinkle into the equation, but I fully expect them to abandon the sinking WAC ship anyway.

Seriously, after two undefeated seasons only to be beat out to a BCS game by a MWC team twice in a row? BSU would be STUPID to not jump ship.

Very good news for BYU and the MWC. This shows we are legit when our coaches choose to stick around.

MWC gets autobid every year even if one loss probably. BSU is probably the only team that could make that not true.

Till 2016, but WTH! he said he does not want a playoff, he likes the BcS ??????

Patterson likes the bowls, but what I think he really likes it that is actually easier to get TCU into the BCS title game than play 3 playoff games just to get into the title game.

He fully believes that this year's undefeated season, last year's No. 7 season, will build so that an undefeated TCU next year (and given that most of the starters outside of 4 very good players on defense are returning, not an odd thought) could actually get in the BCS title game. As it is, he is a Nebraska win and some voter love away from getting in (and his pro-BCS stance may actually go a long ways with the BCS voters this year).

Patterson, whose contract included salary increases for his assistants, maintains that he's in favor of the bowl games and not a playoff system.

"Is it easier to win one game for a championship? Or to have to win four?" Patterson asked. "If you have a playoff, you practice and get on a plane and play. And if you lose, it's over. If you go to a bowl game, you're there seven days and the kids can enjoy a place and get rewarded."

Is this ESPN spin or is Gary that stupid?

What's Patterson talking about National Championships for? He isn't even voting his own team #1 right now.

But is he voting them #2?

I'm not sure that matters. If he believes his team is worthy to play for the national championship then he should vote in a manner that would give his team the best chance play for that championship. Any other vote, even a #2 vote, is shortchanging his team.

Spot on. Either he doesn't believe in his team, or he's a coward.

So, even if he honestly believes UF is #1, and honestly believes his team is #2, he should vote his team #1 despite instructions to vote candidly? I strongly disagree with suggesting that if he believes his team is #2 and deserving of a spot in the BCS champtionshp then he should lie in an attempt to make it happen.

The BCS championship game are for teams that think they are #1. That game is to determine the best team in the country not the 2nd best.

If Patterson thinks his team belongs in that game, he needs to act accordingly and vote his team number 1. By voting his team number 2 he is saying that he doesn't belong in that game and is not doing his team any favors. His first responsibility is to his team not the poll.

No, the BCS Championship game is for the two teams who a complex computer algorithm determines are #1 and #2 to play on the field so that one of the two polls awarding a national championship are then obligated to vote them #1.

As for your second point about responsibility, I hope my kids don't learn ethics from you. You never lie to get ahead. If Gary Patterson doesn't think his team is better than Florida, he should not dishonestly rank them #1 to try and get a shot at them. If the #1 ranking were the be-all-end-all, they wouldn't play the game--they would do the final BCS rankings and ship the trophy UPS. The BCS is about determining #1 and #2 so that those two teams can fight it out for a trophy.

The BCS Championship is about which teams are #1 and #2, and then let them fight it out for a trophy. No one has ever said that the best team always wins....hence the phrase "that's why we play the game." #2 is just as worthy to play that day as is #1---and you shouldn't have to lie to get there.

If you think your team will lose handily in the BCS championship game, sure, vote your team lower than #1. But if you think that you may have the best team in the country, why not get the ball rolling so that they at least have a shot to prove it?

If you think you have the best team in the country, by all means, vote them #1. The point is, if you don't think they are better than the best team (UF), you don't vote them #1 just for positioning.

I gotta agree with Snoscythe on this one, mormonrasta. The BCS is set up to select the two best teams to determine who's the champion under their system. Under the old system, it really mattered who you voted #1. I don't think any team complains if they are selected #2 because it means they are considered worthy to play for the BCS title.

Voting yourself #2 under the BCS format means you think you deserve a shot at playing for the title, which is really all that matters.

I honestly don't think I can definitively say that I know which team is the best based on performance this year, and I think a lot of people are probably in the same boat. If that's the case, there's nothing wrong with giving your team the benefit of the doubt.

To get back to the original topic, I'm glad that Patterson will be sticking around. Coaches like him and Bronco will help build the MWC into a powerful conference and show that it's not just a stepping stone to get to "better" programs.

Bingo. If you're undefeated at the end of the year and you're not voting yourself #1, that's like putting a sign around your neck saying "we aren't good enough to compete". Give your kids a chance, and there's a chance they win.
