Polls

Polls just came out. BCS Poll 29. 29-31 on other polls. BCS has us ahead of Texas and Houston, iirc, but the others generally do not.



BCS had Wisconsin at about 25, ND at about 26, about two more teams, then BYU with Houston and Texas close behind BYU.



Wisconsin may be under-rated.

This is were not being part of a conference hurts the cougs. With no other coaches and media voting along "conference lines" BYU is going to lag behind in the polls. Perfect example was last week, Utah lost to Arizona and still got votes in the coaches and AP polls and was ahead of BYU. :skeptic:

Agreed. They are ranked about where they should be right now. A convincing win over Wisconsin will send us shooting up in the rankings.

Sadly, BYU losing to Virginia and Utah shows pollsters our win over Texas has more to do with Texas than with BYU.

Early season losses have less impact as the season progresses. The problem is that BCS Conferences have learned to schedule OOC games to ensure virtually no losses and lesser conference teams have built-in wins as conference games and there is a plethora of 2 loss teams to choose from.



The other problem is that having given home field advantage away to Wisconsin and ND, most pollsters are assuming BYU will end the regular season 8-4.

Disagree. Oregon State was ranked 25th last week even though they lost to Eastern Washington in week 1. Conference affiliation matters.

Yes, but that was OSU's only loss and they'd been at the top nationally in a few offensive categories.



If BYU had beaten either UVA or Utah, they'd be ranked. But the UVA loss hurts worse. I think pollsters would look at Utah and say 'hey, they also beat a top-ranked Stanford team; Utah has the ability to play good football.'



In other words BYU has 1 understandable loss and 1 bad loss. But even that bad loss is a product of crazy weather (I was there!) Taysom getting his groove back and Anae getting his groove back as an OC for the first time in 2 years. Even if that pick off Jamal's hands didn't happen (to teach the lesson overtly), I'd like to think that Anae doesn't call a similar play in a similar situation now just because he's getting his groove back. As a BYU fan I'm disappointed to be sure, but I'm understanding. And with the current trajectory, I'm hopeful.

OSU has had Mannion putting up crazy number but Byu's offensive number haven't been bad either. TH's rushing #'s and a nationally televised rushing beat down on Texas to me is greater than mannion putting up great Qb numbers. Fair point on BYU's #s. With only 1 loss, as OSU had when ranked last week, I think the Y would have been ranked as well. With 2 losses, 1 of which was to stinker, neither OSU or BYU is ranked this week.



BYU will fall further down during the bye week but if they beat Wisconsin I think they crack the polls in 2 weeks.



Similar with OSU. If they beat USC this week, and I think they can, they'll be in the 27-24 range. They'll slip the following week due to their bye but if they beat ASU the next week, they'll be back in with an 8-2 record.



BYU will be ranked higher at that point, though, but just barely as we bump up just 1 spot following a win over Idaho St. That sets up an epic game against ND the following week, where I'll be screaming myself hoarse in South Bend.

Anae learned one half too late to let the beast go! If Anae stops forcing the pass and let's THill run a little more, it would have helped tremendously--not to mention letting the TEs get involved. BYU would have won that game. I get that he wanted to get work on the passing game, but just blew it! Since when does passing work in bad weather. Running always prevails and teams just have to grind it out. Bt with our D, BYU coulda, should am woulda.

But, that's water under the bridge.

Win the next 2 and everything takes care of itself. It is really all up to BYU at this point. Need to go 3-1, minimum, then win the bowl. 10-3 would set BYU up really well for 2014.

The bye week hurts a little. Teams right around Byu have some easy wins lined up.

Houston could leap frog Byu with a win over ranked UCF on the road, wouldn't that be something! Texas could as well with a win over cupcake Kansas. Notre Dame moves in with a win over Navy.

True. But others higher up will lose and fall out. After VT's tumble this week, it's clearly still early enough in the season for large movements. That window is narrowing very quickly, though.

With any luck the bye week wont hurt us as much as beating Georgia Tech hurt us in the rankings :sick:

I see sevdral talking about just win the next two - self included - then actually looked at the schedule. If I read it correctly

I do not see BYU winning out yet - but I will spend the next 11 days trying to convince me that they can beat Wisconsin.
