Heaps of Challenges

Just flipped over to the KU-Baylor game. Heaps isn't in. Cozart is playing. From the gamecast, looks like Heaps started, went 0/5 and was sacked for -11, then Cozart completed 2 of 6 for 12 yards and ran 4 times for 5 yards.



Is KU that bad? Baylor has been beating up on people, but KU just looks bad.



I feel bad for Jake. Singular career focus hasn't panned out, family life imploded (referring to his parents, I have no idea how he and his wife are doing). I really hope that the next 18 months go better than the last 2.5 years have.



Oh, as I type, Heaps takes over... series ends in a punt. Highlight of KU's game thus far: pinning Baylor inside the 5. Still down 28-0. :~(

He's got his ratios all mixed up is the problem. He's .1% mental, 80% physical. The rest is just missing with him.

Heaps is going to have a fantastic career in flag football in 3 years. So much wasted talent.

I do feel for the kid; he had all the training through high school to make him stand out, and he understandably chose football as career path #1, but he doesn't quite seem to have the physical skills necessary to make it happen in college and beyond. It's gotta be tough to put so much time and energy into chasing your dream only to see it continually fall apart.

hope the educational aspect of KU is good.

Weiss did bring Heaps back in. To his credit, Weiss did not coddle Cryst or Heaps when they failed to meet expectations. Heaps did get a TD pass and the KU QB ran for a score late in the game.



But the freshman QB is getting significant reps.



Next year or sooner Weiss may face the decision of turninf the reins over to someone with 3 years left vs the guy with only 1.



Now that Jake knows that Weiss will not hesitate to bench him, we will find out if there is any fire in his belly.

I heard the commentator say that Weiss just took off the frosh QB's redshirt. That is even worse news for Jake. I watched him throw and he does have a pretty good arm. Maybe he will gat an NFL shot and could do better with NFL WR's.

Well, if Weiss doesn't recognize his talent, Heaps can still transfer to an FCS or lower school that also has the "best quarterback coach in the world" like BYU and KU did.



In all seriousness though, I'm done with the Heaps saga. What has happened at KU has only vindicated what I saw from the outset--Heaps was the benefactor from being the best of the worst QB class coming out of high school in decades, and he never had a shot of living up to the overbilling scouting services gave him, ignoring that 60% of his attempts and 70% of his completions were to a future NFL receiver.



I think Jake may have made it as a decent QB, but unfortunately he bought into his own print too much and folded like cheap lawn furniture when adversity came. I'm over him and wish him the best in whatever career he chooses from here.

I'll admit that when Heaps left I wanted didn't want him to be successful at KU, but this is just sad, I really feel sorry for the kid now.

Yep, I felt the same way. The pathetic QB play at KU shows just how sad Jake's situation is. I can't hate on the kid anymore.

I did and still do want Jake to succed at KU. But, I was prepared to argue that his success was due to it now being 2013 and not 2010 or early 2011 and after 2012 as a redshirt. He has 1 1/2 years to get it going - assuming he starts improving immediately so that KU does not move to the 3rd time is the charm attempt at QB of the future under Weiss - Cryst, Heaps, Freshman Du jour.



But Heaps poor start is a blessing to BYU.



When Taysom struggled early this year it got ugly re fans wanting heads for mismanaging Heaps. That has quieted down.

Hatred for Nelson for supposedly undermining Heaps and costing us a special season or two has diminished.

But most importantly, and I would guess Craig O agrees, it was very important for present and future recruits to see clearly that BYU is not mismanaging star athletes - especially QBs. And now with the huge turnaround for Hill - it is now clear Heaps was not mismanaged and Hill has been well managed other than the freak 2012 injury debacle.

Speaking of management or mismanagement of QB's, no one has really talked about what a good job Jason Beck has done with Taysom.

I was being TIC. Bronco said a few years ago that Doman was the best QB coach in the country so I was referring to that.

I was being TIC. Bronco said a few years ago that Doman was the best QB coach in the country so I was referring to that.

Yeah, I caught the reference, and that was my point, with Anae as an OC, Doman appeared to be a great QB coach. Beck is appearing to be pretty good too, and I think Anae has a lot to do with that.

I watched a lot of the game. Same old Jake. 90 mph fast ball nowhere neat his receivers. Kansas is that bad, Jake didn't have a ton of time to throw. I kept thinking that he would have benefited from a 3 step drop or some short outs, he didn't have enough time for the deep routes to open up. When he did have time he missed his receivers.

I agree. Anae's execution based offenses help the QB to look better. I do think Ja Beck has done a good job this year though. There have been posters who have stated that a hitch in Hill's throwing motion has been coached out. I don't have a critical enough eye to see that sort of thing (unless I'm watching Tim Tebow), but if that is true, the results sure speak for themselves.
