So, is this schedule panning out to be as tough as people thought? I predicted this summer that the schedule looked tougher on paper and that rankings would compare favorably with last years schedule.
Yes. If you had Alabama, Oregon, and Ohio State on the road and a bunch of WAC fodder to fill out the slate you will go 9-3 after three blowout losses and may get lucky and beat one of the big boys. Either way - then beat Washington State or SDSU in a bowl game - bam 10 wins. That is not a tough schedule. It is an easy schedule overall with 3 guaranteed losses.
Conversely, we have a schedule where at least 8 games could go either way. Wait. 9. UVA beat us. So 50/50 gets you 4.5 losses. And that still looks like just abour exactly where we will end up.
UVA was tougher than most expected
BYU started more slowly than most expected
Utah was tougher than pollsters thought early
Texas was not, but looking better every day - our OC outcoached their now former DC badly enough to get him fired in less than 24 hours
MTSU - as expected
USU as expected on D. Loss of Keeton hurt them. But we were handling him pretty well.
GT put up a little more fight than most expected
Houston - nobody expected them to be 5-0. Certainly as good as or slightly better than expected.
ND and BSU and Wisconsin are about where I expected. Dangerous, but beatable.
ISU - cake as expected.
Nevada - not very dangerous, bur do not look past them.
So yeah. I felt 8-4 would be a very good result for BYU vs this schedule. After the U loss, many wondered if we would be Bowl eligible and were certain U would be after their Stanford win.
