We rocked that place tonight. We had 40% coverage of the stadium imo and I proudly invaded the student section with some friends. They didn't like us being in there. Oh well!

Nice work. Today was one of the few times I wished I still lived in Houston..

Same here - I lived in Houston from '85 - '89. I used to go to a friend's house to watch the games. He had a big satellite dish, and that was before they started scrambling the signal. So long as the game was being shown somewhere, you could find it. It would have been really nice to see them in person.

Jay Drew agrees with your 40% assessment (see article Urroner linked in his BYU debauchery thread). Unless mizzoucoug is actually Jay Drew? And he raided the Houston student section?

of course, Jay Drew also felt BYU fans may have gone too far by actually celebrating the win. They even had the temerity to stay and get high fives from the football players.

Really, the mere presence of BYU fans was a despicable display of poor sportsmanship.

No, Jay Drew said that a Houston reporter thought that:
Apparently, at least one reporter who covers Houston thought it was a bit much.

were his exact words. How in the U does that mean Drew thought they went too far? There is no opinion whatsoever on Drew's part!

It's getting kind of ridiculous how so many people here jump on anything Drew says as an "obvious" attack on BYU.

I don't really know Jay Drew from any other utah reporter (except Dick Harmon), but I think a reporter referencing another reporter is lame, lazy news. Reporters are not the story unless they inject themselves into the story which they shouldn't be doing. Referencing another reporter's opinion is worse than stating his own opinion as a reporter of news. He has no reason to cite another reporter, unless it bolsters his own thinking/agenda.

What Drew was doing was pointing out how ridiculous it was for the Houston reporter to get upset about the issue. What you're doing is completely misrepresenting him, and this is lame and lazy.

Where in the article does he point out how ridiculous it is that the reporter thought it was bad?

Thin skinned. Get over it. You can learn something from everything you read. Sometimes you need to read the reader comments. One reader indicated that BYU, because they have a national following, does this to thank their fans after every road game.

If so, this was a lazy report, because that would be the story and the article did not report that. IDK if they do this after every roadie. If so - wins and losses or just wins? If this is a result of the unique distribution of our fanbase - home away from home - it is worth reporting.

And - if he tied that into why BYU is willing to travel so far to play - takes less than neutral neutral sites - 1 and done and 2 fer 1 - maybe it will all start to make a little more sense - in a "the other ND" context. Except they just travel long distances - but not give up any advantage.

First, How is stating my opinion on an opinion site lame and lazy? Second, I wasn't misrepresenting him, because I hadn't read the article and simply stated that reporters who offer their opinions as part of a news story are not being reporters. Third, now that I've read the article, the misrepresenting is being done by you. The article never mentions Drew's bewilderment about the other reporter being upset. It also does not say the Houston coach had any comment about it, except that he hadn't heard anything about it until the reporter mentioned it to him. Fourth, why are you so defensive? I haven't personally attacked you or Drew, just commented on his reporting and yet you turn around and blast me, calling me, "Lame and lazy."

He never said it was ridiculous. Why even mention it? That's right, to indirectly throw mud on BYU. There was no story here, no need to even bring this up for any reason; breaking news: "a nobody reporter from Houston takes offense to something that's not offensive!" BYU just won a barn burner and beat an undefeated team and THIS is what Drew choosess to write about? He's a dink.

I don't really know who Jay Drew is but he seems like kind of a prick. He might've been in the student section with me, however, who knows?

It was classic Jay Drew. It is obvious that he has attended the SLTrib course in always looking for some item of tarnish in what he reports about BYU, but usually (not counting the Spencer Hadley incident where he did cross the line and apologized) it doesn't bother me because it is something that is not normally printed. Yes, our team high-fiving the stalwart Cougar fans that support them on the road is old history and has been done now for several years. This was a Houston reporter's first time at seeing something like that apparently viewing the level of teams that Houston has had in their prior conferences. BYU players/fans by no means are trying to be "in your face" as it has become a tradition if you have attended any games on the road in the last few years. It was a worthy item for me to have it pointed out that for some that see it for the first time, they could have a different reactions than for like UNLV whose fans saw it displayed every other year and don't take offense.

I still think Jay reports with a bit of a chip on his shoulder in his assignment of reporting BYU, but I still find it usually of value to read what he's dug up as long as I have a balance with someone reporting the straight up facts without trying to slant that story. If I only had Drew to read, then things would be different.

I actually feel bad for reporters these days. Not just in Utah. Nationally. Globally. News print - traditionally paid for mostly by advertising and partly by paid subscription, is dead. Hardly anybody advertises there anymore. BAM Craig's List. Angie's List, etc.

And hardly anyone wants a big wad of paper thrown in their yard at 4:30 - 7:00 Am rain, snow, or sleet.

You see the impact in every city or region. In Utah, even though I do not live in Utah, I have read on-line articles about The Daily Herald being sold to some out-of-state newspaper group - Colorado or someplace. BAM. Consolidation. Layoffs. Transfers. Even Darnell had to go as part of the consolidation. So Franchuck's job us to be a click prick. They all have been relegated to such. Be a bit of a prick - generate some clicks. Hopefully report something useful once in a while. No research resources like the good old days. Instant publication on Web. Less, if any, Editor review. Typos on-line. Etc. Lazy reporting because they are all doing double or triple duty and have no time. And anyone with a smart phone and a laptop is now a reporter - free lance for free.

Throw in Deseret News getting consolidated with the Salt Lake Tribune. BAM. The Trib just announced another 20% layoff last week. It will get worse.

There's exactly as much evidence to suggest that Drew thought it was offensive as there is to suggest that he thought it ridiculous that the Houston report thought it was offensive. None at all.

Wait. I repented and all but reversed my position on the topic here now that I get it that every field in the country is all but a home game for us when the stadium has excess capacity so the faithful can get tickets. ;)
