Coke Zero arrives ahead of Tech at BYU

I wonder what exactly constitutes..."caused a run on the machine." The article makes it sound like the only way a majority of the would ever have to access Coke Zero would be that machine, when the overwhelming majority of students would literally have to pass numbers of places that sell Coke Zero on their way to class before they even got to campus... I guess this is funny ... :roll:

I in large part agree. I never drink caffeinated drinks, but wouldn't care a bit if they sold them on campus. And the "demand" for them would drop like a rock when it wasn't such a novelty to actually get the stuff on campus and people returned to buying it at Smiths (like they do now).

Georgia Tech fans think that we're pretty weird right now. And not for the usual reason either, the types that spark missionary conversations (such as "Why don't you guys drink and have sex like normal college students?").

Byu should get rid of the rule it's stupid and outdated. Keep the non-caf. options avaiable and make it a choice for the students. The Food and Bev department said that the reason that they only do Caffeine free is due to the demand. Really? Put Caff and Non Caff coke in the vending machines and see which one sells out first.

I like the no beard rule. I can grow one in about 3 days, and I hated shaving when I was there. I even got into an argument with an Intramural Official who said that my shadow when I checked in for an 8:30 pm game indicated that I needed to shave again (I had shaved before work at 6 am).



But for those who can't grow beards, I really dislike the Cal-Berkeley look with 17 hairs per square inch followed by a blad spot followed by another patch of ugly. It looks slovenly and disrespectful IMO. I think the clean-cut look does a ton for the reputation BYU students have with recruiters who come to town to hire them.



But those same recruiters would really like some coffee or a diet Coke since they travel a ton and are frequently jet lagged. Think we could get some Folgers in the Tanner building?

There is a difference between a cup of coffee which is explicitly against the word of wisdom versus a Dr. Pepper.



There is also a difference versus no beard and a Dr. Pepper. A beard is against the honor code. Drinking a Coke is not against the honor code. So why not have it? BYU says it's because of lack of demand, which is false. So, the only reason it isn't there is because someone at BYU has a strong personal decision which they feel every student and visitor should comply with.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is no rule against having caffeinated beverages at BYU. BYU just chooses not to sell, serve, or sponsor them. BYU students can drink coke zero to their hearts content without violating any policy or agreement.



As a student, I liked that everything served there was none caffeinated. Outside of Utah, you're almost forced to have caffeine in your drink (which does nothing for taste) if you want to enjoy many different flavors of soft drink. Even at larger grocery stores your options can be pretty limited, including diet drinks.

I for one was a huge fan of caffeine free Mountain Dew. Regular Mountain Dew would keep my awake at night, but the caffeine free stuff was good to go. Never once saw it sold anywhere else in the world.

I guess my only concern with having caffeinated drinks on campus would be the "letter of the law" student who does not drink such beverages, only to become hooked on the stuff because he/she suddenly decides it's OK if they are selling it on campus. I have family members who can't stop drinking the stuff and I personally don't feel it's healthy. Would be a shame to have sons/daughters go to BYU and develop an addiction to something because they decide if it's for sale on BYU campus, it's ok to drink it. But hopefully teachings within the family are stronger than that.

My only question is, when was the last time you saw a human being stock up on Sprite in their garage/dorm?

I don't have sprite, but I do have 7-up, root beer, cherry 7-up in my garage... Along with a few caffeinated selections.

This was a big deal for a while in my mission. It got kind of ugly at times. Then a visiting GA was asked. His response was it was better to drink the coke than argue about it.

For me I was actually "prescribed" a coke a day because I suffer from migraines and it helps to prevent them. The migraine formula of excedrine includes caffeine and has proven to be the only thing that will stop my migraine except hydrocodone which I like to avoid. But ever since I got hit by a drunk doing about 90mph I drink my one a day coke and keep a SAMs club bottle of excedrine migraine in every car and at home. It helps keep them from flaring up every day (thank you very much you three times over the limit sob but I can be thankful that wasn't stopped at the light instead I was coasting or my five kids would have been fatherless). The real interesting thing was that at the previous light where I made my left turn that put me in front of him - he was stopped at the light - I heard the spirit say he was going to hit me. I shrugged it off of course but a mile or so down the road he did as we approached the next light that was red. Funny part was he tried to run and I got so mad that I chased him down till the cops showed up and arrested him. My car had half the back end dragging down the hwy while I chased him. I was too mad to realize that my body was pretty sore and the next day I couldn't even get out of bed. Fun fun.

If there's a good reason they should give it. Otherwise it just confuses members and causes friction within the church and makes us look crazy and hypocritical to those outside of it. The statement that there isn't any demand is totally indefensible. (Go look at the Georgia Tech fanboard right now. One of the main topics is the Coke Zero article and how were crazy. Thanks to Peggy Fletcher Stack and the trib)



Church headquarters sells coke but BYU stadiums don't? That just adds fuel to the active Mormon BYU hating crowd.
