Whittingham family shame

"Lt. Arnold Lemmon with the BYU Police Department said they received two related complaints on Saturday. A BYU fan told police he was taking pictures with his cell phone when a member of the Utes' sideline staff grabbed the phone, and a cameraman was on the field taking pictures of the team when the same person demanded that he stop taking pictures... The department has a name and is investigating the two incidents... According to the police report, BYU student Brent Wirig called police at about 9 p.m. Saturday to report that a Utah fan had stolen his $500 Blackberry after the game. The man came up to him as he was taking pictures with his phone, grabbed it and made a motion as if to throw it, but Wirig never saw the phone leave the man's hand. He then grabbed the man and called for an officer, according to the report; a fight ensued, and Wirig was hit in the jaw, though he was not sure who hit him. A cameraman had recorded the entire incident. The cameraman told police that the same man had punched his video camera and broken it as well as stolen his hat and injured his face. Both men identified the same man, who was affiliated with the team, as attacking them, and said they reported the incident to a nearby University of Utah police officer who did not search or detain the man

There are some blog reports that the person that stole the blackberry, punched the BYU fan and attacked the other camera man was Tyler Whittingham. The ultimate black eye for the U and the Whittingham family if true. Makes sense considering the proximity of the rest of their family.



Not only are U fans classless, and we all know what Kyle has done in the past, but now his wife and son are in on the sham.



Apparently the offender took offense to the fact that people were taking pictures of the Whittingham family after the game; though making the issue violent was just plain idiotic...



Just as idiotic was the fact that as heated as this rivalry has been, Kyles family was on the field.... I assure you that Bronco doesn't have his kids and wife in the field at Rice Chex.

Can we tell from any of the photos published if the attacker is one of the sons?

It's an unfortunate event and story, and like I said on another thread, we'll probably never truly know exactly what happened. Until we learn more from police reports, etc. I would like to move on in our discussion. Talking so much about classlessness leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

If the video of the incident could only be retrieved. That would be great. The speculation drives me crazy.

I thought this was a good article. Didn't the wife tell the police all kinds of stories about being hit in the jaw (unprovoked was my impression) by a byu fan who then told her to "shutup?"



and it was a Whittingham who started it? i guess that's still a rumor at this point, but the "rumors" the police are dispelling are nothing more than Mrs. Whittingham herself telling a yarn.



How far do you think this will go? Lawsuits? Court dates? false statements to the police?

I am willing to just let this go, just as I wish Ute fans would let it go with Max. Just because they are not willing to take the high road does not mean we can't be classy. Obviously, I think what happened was silly, overemotional, and typical of rivalry games. This just goes to show that fans, players, etc on both sides need to chill a little with this rivalry. As Bronco said, when things get too personal, people often overreact. It was very personal for Max, and for the Whittingham family, and I get that.

If the discussions were going anywhere I'd say they were worth having. But they're only stirring up new bait for trolls, which is a good enough reason to stop in my book.

I've said in other threads, I'd love to see some sort of action from the police, but we all know how slowly the judicial system moves. It's just frustrating to me knowing we'll never know the whole story.

I haven't been following this story closely, but from what I gather the "picture taking" was of the Whittingham kids crying. If I was Coach Whittingam and that really happened, I would be proud if my wife confronted the fans involved and if my son took the phone and punched somebody. That's what I would want them to do.



Perhaps I'm missing some details.

I heard that it was picture of some Ewts flipping off BYU fans, but either way, why was the second camera broken?

Oh please, is it that hard to get up and walk away? IF they were actually taking pictures of Whittingham's adolescent kids crying like babies (a HUGE if), it still does not in any way justify accosting, assaulting, or robbing somebody.

But I've also heard that the picture taking was of Ute fans (and possibly even Whit's son flipping off BYU fans) if that's the case, then I would take pictures of it too, to further document how classless Utes are. That's why I'm hoping they are able to retrieve the pictures from the broken phone and publish them.

We've heard various reports of what the blackberry pictures were of, and we don't know what's true. However, they did release photos from a press(?) photographer of crying Whit kids, and we also know from police reports that this camera was shoved into the face of the photographer by a ute and broken as well. My guess is the two stories got muddled together and I wouldn't be surprised at all if the original photos had nothing to do with kids' tears.

My guess is that BYU will work to get this story snuffed out as a courtesy to Utah and the Whittingham family. My guess is that we will hear nothing else about it. It will be more rivalry folklore without the facts coming out.

BerliNY - - Way to totally twist Schmoe's words to the opposite of what he said. FYI "walking away" is the opposite of "mixing it up".

So many non-stories involving this game. The story should be that Max played aweful but did enough to throw the winning TD pass in OT. He still beat the U even on an off day! 8)
