Post-Utah St RER and other Statistical Observations

Here is the RER (Receiver Efficiency Rating) for the receivers for the Utah State game, with season RER in parentheses.

- BYU hasn't given up a blue zone rushing defense since the Texas game.



- Utah St was the first time BYU did not have a rushing TD this season.



- Three of Hill's five interceptions have come on 3rd down. His 3rd Down PER is a robust 47.09



- Hill's PER the last two games is 150.24.



- BYU had nine plays of 20 or more yards. The most since also having nine versus Hawaii in 2011.



- The team with the higher PER has won 25 of last 27 games (.926)



- BYU had 18 first downs. The first down total has dropped each of the last three games.



- While teams are struggling to throw the ball on BYU, opponents have a 107.01 PER, they're quite efficient in the red zone. Opponent's red zone PER is 193.71.

- about first downs; don't need a lot of them if you are picking up 20 yards at a time. I see this as a good sign.

Good point. But doesn't seem related. BYU has had 14 games with 8, 9 or 10 plays of 20 or more yards (never had more than 10). BYU averages 27 first downs in those games.



The difference right now is the amount of 3 and outs for the offense. in the other games of 8 or more explosive plays, BYU averaged 1.8 3-and-outs. They had 7 versus Utah St.



3-and-out might be the offense's single biggest failure - outside of passing efficiency that is. They have 24 on the season. We have 33 all of 2012. We had 26 in all of 2005 & 2006. 2007 saw just 25 3-and-outs, the fewest under Bronco.



If we can get a few more first downs on some series, and punt a little less, our offense is going to be very good.

It's probably my blue goggled eyes, and I'm not expert, but the defense looked and played really tough! I know Keeton was hurt and only threw 10 passes but statistically he wasn't better than the second stringer. We looked tough and mean.

Regarding red zone problems and 3 and outs, check out the decimation of the offensive line in the videos that ogletreefootball.com is putting out on twitter/instagram. Shameful.



Clean that crap up and red zone problems will stop as will the 3 and outs...

Chuckie did not have the time to recover his PER from the pick 6. But would have.

Credit our D, but BYU was not getting ALOT of pressure on CK and that would have hurt over time.

Post-INT Chuckie was 3 of 9 for 26 yards 1 TD. That's a PER of 94.27. That's not really recovering.

Obviously this game is different/closer if Chuckie plays the whole game, but our defense is legit and our offense played very well; we still win this one either way.

IMO, the only thing Chuckie changes is the margin of defeat. They lose 31-17 instead of 31-14. They weren't moving the ball with Chuckie. They hadn't moved it with Chuckie the two previous years either. I saw nothing the first quarter to make me think anything would have changed.
