BYU just dominated a team when they came in as underdogs on the road. They played a great game! You wouldn't know it by reading the game thread, however. I counted 65 of the comments as being harshly critical of either the players or the coaches. I didn't even count those that were critical of the referees.



I think we can do better. And some of you may even lower your blood pressure as well if we can learn how to enjoy the game a little more! :)

BYU fans are spoiled sometimes... this was an incredible game against a really really good defense and a very difficult place to play (what did they say 1st loss in Logan in 2 years?) While USU isn't the same problem to us in recruiting, this was a must win game for us and we didn't just get it, we dominated.



As far as the attitudes, I think it's a hangover from the Utah game. It was at our place and we have the better team,,, but we were outcoached and outhustled and they kept serious bragging rights. The fact that Taysom and the Oline are figuring things out is huge because we have so many returnees. Everything that happens this year is a bonus to me. I'm very very excited for next year to be honest. If we can replace D Sorenson, KVN, Unga, EM... we're going to be scary good.

Davis has the speed if they keep him in the secondary to be an all American by the times he's a senior (but he can't bite on those pump fakes)

Matt Hadley , Rhett Sandlin, and Micah Hanneman will be back from missions

and maybe even Trevor Bateman





Then of course there's

Troy Hinds that has the physical tools to play DE in the NFL, he'll be back from his mission



and if Jon Rhym Peeps can get in shape this spring and summer, I think we have a disruptive and perfect DT to go with our other guys. EM is a great player, but Jon Rhym has the size and speed to be the prototypical DT that NFL scouts drool over. (Haloti Ngata size and speed)



I could not be more excited to watch this team mature, learn the offense and defense and go through the gauntlet this year to get ready for next year. We'll go to a bowl game this year and we'll win some and we'll lose some.. I just hate that we lost to Utah and I hate that we're losing KVN, D Sorenson, and EM... those 3 deserve a special season... it's still possible... but for BYU the future is very bright.



NOTE: We need to sign our top Oline target Mama and our Oline will be nasty, deep, and Jamal will run for 2k next year.



I'd also like to see them go out and sign one more JUCO corner (keep the cupboard full) and we desperately need a stud linebacker (or two) to help from the JUCO ranks for next year (one that comes ready to play)



If we do that, assuming Taysom continues to improve, we are going to be a juggernaut

I was very happy with the outcome of this game and have always said that Taysom will go down as one of the greats--I believe last night was huge step in that direction. However, yes, a lot of the down feelings stem from 2 crappy performances so far this year that have already screwed our season.



For me, I am most bitter about Brandon Doman getting Taysom hurt last year. Taysom would've already progressed at the end of last year and come into this season ready to roll. Instead he is playing catch up. This was an important year for the program and thanks to bad coaching we lost 2 games that we didn't need to. I'm tired of looking forward to next season. That being said, I think we'll actually win out this year fwiw.

I don't know why you need to look forward to next season. If we win out this season will beat ANY MWC season. You should enjoy the ride

Some people don't realize that complaining just highlights their ignorance sometimes:



"Taysom can't throw---we need Olsen!!" No, Hill threw very well last season, he just needed to overcome a hitch in his form that likely was just an artifact of his injured knee. Now that he has refined his footwork, he's suddenly accurate and has touch.



"Why does Anae keep calling that run up the middle?!" Well, he's actually calling 5 different runs up the middle--lead, power, inside zone, ride, and peel. Those different calls force the DL and linebackers to account for each and every OL gap on every running play, which prevents them from cheating to the edges and keeps the edges open. Not every play is designed as a home-run threat. These are designed to keep the home-run threats viable.



"Why is Taysom Hill still playing with 8 minutes left in the game!!!" I get it--people are gun shy about how Hill got injured last season. But that was about the flukiest injury in the history of BYU sports. But that's all it was--a stupid miscommunication between Doman and Hill. BYU has already gone a long way towards preventing that from happening again in the future by firing half of that communication process. But to look back at that and clamor for Hill, as a sophomore with limited previous experience, to come out of the game instead of getting one or two more series of reps in-game is like asking "Why is Jamaal Williams reading that newspaper?!?!!" a year after the DiLuigi driveway injury. BYU has a plan for blowout wins--Hill will play a full series in the 4th, and then Olsen will come in and run the clock out and only pass on 3rd downs. Last night Hill got an extra throw away series to avoid any stigma/suggestion that he was taken out because of the pick.

Regarding Taysom, John Beck didn't have "it" till he was a senior. Taysom will get his timing down and make us proud he is a cougar...I'm already proud of him.

A few cougar fans have short memories. Our best teams endured a few bone-head plays and mistakes...they just made fewer than the other teams. That is exactly what happened last night. Teams will not be able to focus on Cody when Mitch is such a threat.



USU had injuries, but we have not had the same O-line from game to game. My goggles are dark blue...sometimes royal blue. We have a great team, and I love watching them. Can't wait to re-watch the game on Monday.

It was very clear even last year that Hill has an NFL arm... the question is, is he Jake Locker or Drew Brees? Last night he looked like Brees, but against Utah and Virginia, he looked like Locker (against Texas he looked like RG III.0)



Hill has a Brees like arm... but so does Locker... the difference in production is night and day and we will see where Hill goes from here. Fortunately his receivers are starting to figure him out.



Locker never improved as a college QB in spite of all his gifts (was having a decent season as a pro this yr til he got hurt, but it took a long time to teach him how to be an NFL QB)

Personally, I'm ALWAYS going to be critical of the team DURING the game. The game could go almost perfectly and we could smash the #1 ranked team and I'll still yell at my TV if any WR drops a pass or even if a RB puts the ball on the ground and we still get it back.

That doesn't mean I won't be elated with the game and its' result at the end.

Craig, great preview! Did you include that highly recruited JC WR that was criticized by a pro for selecting BYU?

What seemed woefully obvious in your preview was the absence of LBs--our strength on D. We see what Hadley's loss can bring. BYU will miss KVN like BYU missed Jimmer. Fua is good but easily moved off the play. Manu and Danny will be more easily replaced. But, Bronco will have them reloaded and ready. I hope you are right about the Oline. Seems like ALOT to work with, but after watching last night, they were getting blown up!

But ALOT of potential.

Where do you see a lot of potential on o-line? I came away thinking they could shuffle guys around all they wanted, it doesn't matter, To me, it just doesn't seem like we have the guys. just gonna have to game plan around a porous line.

I'd sincerely like to know, I wanna look for it

As far as LBs, if Fua can gain 20 lbs in the offseason, Pikula will step up, we have half our linebacking corps starters. I think Ho Ching will eventually be an amazing run stopper but we don't have a solid replacement on the other side of Fua (and the problem with Fua is he can't take on a blocker and get TFL on running plays, he's too light and now he's the focus not KVN)

I don't know where we find 2-3 more great linebackers, but that's gotta be the #1 priority for next year, aside from signing Damien Mama.... sign Mama and our Oline is good for the next 4 years with all the others we have.



On the Dline we have several guys that can play NT and Peck, Kaufusi at the ends but our depth is shallow at best and we'll miss EM badly, but his loss can be replaced easier than KVN.

Utah State has a really good defense and there were times where our Oline did an amazing job last night.



Everyone of our starters last night will be back next year; they will improve... this is the 1st year in a new offense



Here's potential

T fab should be eligible next year to play: He was Big 12 honorable mention as a soph at TCU

Move him to right tackle



Kearsley has NFL potential as a guard or center, put him at left guard



Alletto is solid and has 2 more years to play center



Ryker Matthews, if healthy can be as good as John Tait, by the time he's a senior... he's your left tackle if healthy



Your right guard would be Damien Mama from day 1 if he signs...



that's an incredible Oline

but it's the depth you're not appreciating

We still have starters from last night that aren't even on that list above

Johnson a walkon guard with 2 more to play has been surprisingly sound

Kafu is getting better

Wesley is huge and would start for most D1 programs

Yeck Stringham Black Wilcox all have D1 size and could start and have started



that kind of depth gives the coaches options, it helps them through injuries, and it creates competition.. we haven't had this kind of depth at Oline for 2 decades at BYU



When this Oline matures, it's going to be very good... again keep in mind this is a very young oline learning a new offense with a new qb and a new OC... but at least it's not a senior laden Oline that we have to scrap and start over on next year.



Getting TayFab next year is huge and getting Mama would be amazing...



I know our Oline has underperformed at times this year, but when you stop and watch some of the plays from last night (sorry to those that didn't have the right satellite and dvr) all the blitz pickups were made and Taysom made some really great plays... you can see the light turn on, you can see what our Oline potentially can do.



This is a Utah State defense that went into USC and kept them at 14 points.... This Utah State defense is really good and we could have hung 50 on them last night if Anae hadn't put his foot on the brakes so early. You have to give the oline some credit for that, Utah State decided in order to beat BYU they would stop the run and make Taysom pass... and it blew up in their faces.. Same strategy as Utah, but a different Taysom Hill showed up and a different Anae showed up.. rather than beat our heads against the wall, we passed and passed effectively... at Utah it was reactive playcalling and last night it was proactive playcalling and it worked.

btw - if people are complaining about this o-line ... they must easily be forgetting our oline play last year... for goodness sake we had a 245 lb center trying to play D1 football last year... Braden Brown and Braden Hansen were subpar as seniors and Ryker was hurt all the time... we are light years ahead of where we were last year, particularly as it comes to depth... Getting TayFab is a big part of that depth, because it immediately gives us a legit starter at either tackle to mix with what we also have now.

I appreciate your thread. I've heard a lot of complaining about cupcake opponents. There's an obvious difference in teams but I don't like insulting them. Some seem to want the #1 strength of schedule in the nation and an undefeated season. A lot of top teams play easier opponents and strengthen up playing them. A lot whined loudly about losing to utah, wait, I didn't hear them cause I was as loud as anybody (I'd trade the Utah State score with the utah score).



I don't think we've seen the best of BYU this year. I love the Hill to Mathews combo and it'll only get better. We may have set backs but this team will be better at the end of the season than it is now.



C carson, I also like your comments. If we can replace KVN and a couple of others we have a bright future. How would you like to be a db with fast & very good 6'6" receivers coming at you at the same time. We could have the tallest receivers in the nation next year and we're close now.

Tfab better get his academics in order. Bronco didn't sound very positive on him at all. I have always wondered if tab woulda me it as a d1 player. Still not convinced he will even see the field. I sure hope he does though. Need him desperately.

Brandon Ogletree likes to point out that while BYU's O-Line was bad last year, it is horrendously worse this season. He called this year's starters last year's walk-ons.
