Mars⢠Joining the ranks: Lone Peak (Utah) defensive back Jacob Hanneman (6-1 190) is BYU's newest commit for the class of 2010, according to totalbluesports.com. Hanneman played both receiver and safety for Lone Peak this season, catching 19 passes for 380 yards and seven touchdowns. He was also credited with 33 tackles and four interceptions. His teammate, linebacker Sae Tautu (6-3 215), committed to BYU in June. He finished the year with 87 tackles and five sacks.
⢠Still winning: Oaks Christian (Calif.) blasted Harvard Westlake 45-10 in the CIF Southern Section-Northwest Division quarterfinals, the school's 33rd consecutive victory. BYU commit Alani Fua (6-4 210 LB/TE) caught six passes for 50 yards in the win, which puts undefeated Oaks Christian (12-0) in the semifinals against Cathedral.
⢠Revenge is sweet: BYU commit Collin Keoshian (6-2 225 RB/LB) accounted for seven touchdowns and 215 yards from scrimmage as Santa Clarita Christian School (Calif.) rolled to a 62-22 win over Thacher in the CIF Southern Section Division I 8-man football semifinals. Keoshian, who was injured and didn't play when Thacher beat SCCS 48-16 in October, had five touchdown runs, a touchdown pass and a touchdown reception. It was SCCS's first win ever over Thacher. Keoshian and SCCS will play Faith Baptist for the state championship on Saturday. Earlier this season, SCCS beat Faith Baptist 40-34.
⢠Playoff win: BYU prospect Joshua Quezada (6-0 198 RB) ran 24 times for 224 yards and two touchdowns as La Habra (Calif.) ran past El Dorado 27-7 in the CIF Southern Section Southwest Division playoffs. "We were just pounding the ball tonight," Quezada told the Orange County Register. La Habra (11-1), the No. 1 team in the Southwest Division, takes on No. 4 Cyprus on Friday.
⢠Contribution: BYU prospect Sammy Meredith (6-4 250 DE/TE) caught a 6-yard touchdown pass as Helix (Calif.) earned a 28-14 victory over Valhalla in the state playoffs. [Who?] :skeptic:
⢠End of the line: Top-ranked Grayson (Ga.) fell to No. 3 Newnan 9-7 in the second round of the state playoffs, ending the season for BYU recruit Kori Gaines (5-9 175 DB).
⢠Last-second victory: Cameron Mercada kicked a 28-yard field goal in overtime as Kahuku (Hawaii) edged Farrington 9-6 in the state playoffs. BYU recruit Hauoli Jamora (6-2 230 DE) recovered a fumble in overtime to set up the game-winning kick. He also blocked a field goal in regulation. Kahuku (12-0), the O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion, will face Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Kamehameha (11-1) in Friday's championship game at Aloha Stadium.
⢠Back to the title game: BYU recruit Jake Heaps (6-2 195 QB) threw for 220 yards and two touchdowns as Skyline (Wash.) avenged an earlier loss with a 31-26 victory over top-ranked Bothell in the Class 4A semifinals. Heaps had two interceptions in the first half but converted some key third downs in the second to keep Skyline on top. "On third downs, it was just a matter of, 'We got this,' " Heaps told the Seattle Times. "There was no question about it that I felt that we could (win). Our guys have worked so hard. They wanted it so bad." Skyline (11-2) will play No. 10 Ferris (10-3) in the state championship game on Saturday.
