BYU @USU Will Come Down To

The BYU DBs.

BYU beat USU without much of an offense in Provo last year because we had much better than usual corners and that allowed us to stop the run including Chuckie Keeton and still be able to slow down the USU passing attack. The game is in Logan, unfortunately, this year - where an impotent Jake Heaps led offense lost to USU badly. But, after that, J Hill was fired and Bronco recaptured the heart and soul of the defense. But Heaps was on the verge of back-to-back losses to USU in 2011 when Riley Nelson saved the program and avoided the loss. T Hill in his first meaningful start - and last due to injury in 2012 - squeaked out a 1 point win on a single score.

Defense made it happen. There was no offense.

Same thing this year although the offense will be slightly improved vs 2012.

Agree with the above. Would also add that Hill needs to pass down-field, and WR's must catch and secure everything that comes near them. Was encouraged by Apo's contributions (finally) in Friday's game with Cody out. Besides our DB's, this game in Logan will hinge on our ability to thin out USU's box by maintaining a passing threat. TE production would be gravy, but not counting on that. At any rate, if we can pass on them when needed, then the rushing game will overwhelm them.

How about BYU starting with simple Execution: No fumbles. Limited flags--FALSE STARTS!

Whichever team executes in the Red/blue zone. Just like it did against the utes.

This is really what it will come down to. Yes utah state will have a little easier time getting the ball downfield because of our corner situation but it won't be the key to the game.

the key will be hill's ability to punch it in for touchdowns when they get into the red zone. same for chuckie. and that is why i expect to lose the game. Chuckie will get touchdowns and we won't. our offense will move the ball but get canned in the red zone. I will still predict a byu win though because i just can't pick against byu and we could have some lucky bounces.

I expect it to be a close game. i hope that hine is healthy because i really think he is emerging as a game changer with his ability to return kicks and helping our offense out with field position.

Turnovers. If we give Chuckie easy/short fields we lose this game. If we can hold on to the ball I like our odds.

I don't see how this years offense is better than last years. Our Blue/Red zone conversion rate is horrible. I have no confidence in this offense that if we get a 1st and goal that we will score.

Going 90 yards to get stopped in the final 10 is meaningless.

so far our offense has not been better than last years. about the same. possibly worse.

. . . the BYU OLine, in my opinion. BYU should post a modified Dante quote above each portal at LES: Abandon all hope of a drop-back passing game, ye who enter here. I know I have. I am ok with that because of how dangerous Hill's legs are. BYU is currently averaging 307 rush yards/game. USU holds opponents 126 yards/game below their average (thanks, Spiff). If we rush at our average, I think we win. If USU's defense does their usual, meaning we rush for only 181 yards, we are doomed. It all depends on the Williams dive play. Egads, we have become the Air Force Academy.

This game will feature two defenses that will dominate the other team's offense. In fact, I think we'll see a repeat of last year's game in Provo (only with a little more scoring). Utah State only has one weapon on offense and that's obviously Keeton and BYU isn't going to be able to run on Utah State since the passing game isn't anywhere near where it needs to be in order to keep USU's D honest and this year's USU D is just as good if not better than last year's that would have pitched a shut-out in Provo had Hill not had a lucky 40 yard pass over the middle before halftime which allowed the game's only TD.

Hill will revert to the passing stats he had against Virginia and Utah in this game. As for who wins, I see a pick 'em... Bronco has actually done a pretty good job of defending Chuckie since he's been in Logan and so I don't see any reason to think that won't change Friday and as stated earlier, he doesn't really have a solid supporting cast around him on offense and that should allow BYU's D to have its way most of the night with the Aggies. While I don't think this will be a repeat of the 6-3 game in Provo from last season, I do think it will be low scoring and whoever gets to 17 wins the game.

BYU @USU Will Come Down To: Cody Hoffman.

If Taysom will put the ball in the air and let Hoffman makes plays we will win. USU's DB's are not a good as last year. Hoffman made big plays last year. Anea needs to loosen the leash on Hill and let him throw down field. If Hoffman isn't double teamed he is open. Get him the ball. And throw the ball high to Hoffman and Matthews and we will have a big day passing.

BYU will be able to run on Utah State. They've run on everyone this year. The question is can they throw. If Hill throws like he did the first three games, BYU will lose. If he throws close to what he did versus MTSU, BYU will win.

If he takes his time, picks his spots, sets his feet, BYU will win. If he's getting rushed and throwing off balance and not in rhythm, BYU will lose.

Win the PER battle and we win.

Wanna bet? USU's D is just as good if not better than last year and will have similar success to what Utah did in Provo.

They've run on everyone this year.

What did they do vs. Virginia and Utah? Granted, over 175 yards on the ground, but given the number of plays involved and a run-heavy offense, that's what you'd expect. The Cougs averaged 3 ypc against both schools in their losses... big whoop.

You're comparing Virginia, Texas and Utah to MTSU? Hill won't be able to throw like he did vs. the Blue Raiders.

I'm gonna go with a goal of Bronco's. Score 24+ points and hold the other team below 24 points.

If Byu can score 24 points they win, I think its that easy. In fact if they could have scored 24 points in every game this year they'd be undefeated. the defense will be able to hold USU under 24 9 times out of 10, not a worry for me.

maybe you need a reminder the byu had more yards of total offense against both va and utah. we have run on everybody and it has been enough to win. spiff is right. if taysom is able to complete a decent percentage of his passes then we will most certainly win.

honestly the key to the game is clear. get touchdowns when we are in the red zone and don't turn the ball over.

this has been true, especially, in the last two years with our defense. i think byu is capable of scoring 24 but they would have to improve quite a bit from what they had done this season if they are going to do it on Friday. my head says they can but probably wont.

IMO, the only way USU gets to 24 is if BYU is turning the ball over.

Total yards hasn't been the issue and is a bit misleading. Even if Tayson completes more passes it still doesn't equal points. 3rd down and red zone % have been the biggest problems. Improve those and we could get less yardage and win in theory.

Johnny, if BYU had ran as many plays as Utah they would have only had 331 yards total to Utah's 400 or so. That means that their efficiency was worse. Running more plays isn't worth a hill of beans if you can't get more than 3.5 yds/play. This obsession with total yards is misleading. You have to look at yds/play, total, yards, score, red zone offense, passing efficiency, turnovers, offensive line play, and the whole other jillions of variables to say what is needed to win. However, right now BYU must fix the fumble problem, INTs won't be an issue because against a decent D Hill throws it in the stands anyhow, and red zone efficiency, and the weak passing o-line. For crying out loud they gave up five sacks and if Hill wasn't as athletic as he is it would have been much more.
