If you've forgotten, BYU football is a missionary effort. We are supposed to try to share goodness to the world through whatever means we can...whether by proselyting or by good/great examples of famous people. As long as Bronco coaches them to be good people, that's all that really matters.

That said, it is extremely disappointing when we lose...especially games when we should have won, or where we were ahead, or 4 straight to the Utes. While I don't want him gone because of how he leads this team, I wish he would get the team more wins...

...through clean methods.

True, but the code word for the missionary aspect "exposure" is magnified 10-fold when we're winning (perennial top 25 kind of winning). If the wins don't come, neither does the exposure. So if it costs you 25% more salary to bring in a coach that gives you 5x the exposure, you figure out a way to come up with the extra 25%.

Which is why--other than personal reasons--I wish we would win more games.

I think Bronco does a good job and I do get tired of the "what have you done for me lately" culture of college football and the sky is falling every time we lose to the U. That said, I don't know that I can continue to watch such anemic offenses for the next couple years and not ask for something new.

25%? I'd go a heck of a lot more than that. Because of it's obvious connections, BYU has the money to match any other school. It could easily match Alabama or Texas and pony up $5 million a year to a head coach, as well as X amount of money above the average to the best coordinators. But it seems they want to attempt a return to national prominence and maximum exposure on the cheap. Good luck with that.

Well, wish in one hand, crap in the other, and see which one fills up first. ;)

Two losing seasons in a row.

He's one OC away from hitting the jackpot. Bring in dennis Ericsson as a co-OC. Pay the bucks and watch the wins roll in with the D that we have. Who do we let go? Beck?

We've been just a OC away from the BCS.

If that had been an option, I may have voted for that.

I struggled between the downtrend option and the Bronco is OK as long as he wins more than he loses and runs a clean program. But the two are not mutually exclusive. Edwards ran a pretty clean program as well. BYU has never had a major NCAA violation--the only school that can claim that now. I think if the down trend continues, no one will have to remove Bronco. He will hang it up on his own. Just like the end of LaVell's career, the last four years after 1996 were mediocre. After four mediocre years in a row, it is time to go. We are getting close to that with Bronco, if this year does not turn around quickly. It would basically be this year and one more, and I think that would be it. I am not saying we need to be BCS bound in the next two years, but I would think we would at least need to be back in the Top 25.

It's ridiculous to be talking about a new coach 3 months after the current coach's contract was renewed. Bronco's contract runs through 2016.

He's had a respectable run. He's won enough games and been here long enough that he took an offer to coach elsewhere or retire before his contract expired, it wouldn't be awkward.

If this is a losing season, I'm ok. Not only is this season is one of the toughest schedules BYU has ever had, but we're installing a new offense.

If the 2014 season is also a losing season and we're getting blown out, then the 2015 season is make or break.

Worst case scenario, we let Bronco go a year before his contract ends.

Second worst, we don't renew his contract.

In all likelihood, we'll see enough positives that Bronco gets another extension if he wants it.

This, mostly. Co-OC might be just about as bad as QB2. Except by some fluke it works at Utah. But Erickson by age and experience is the true OC and BJ is still very green behind the ears. Anae wouldn't go for that. And Anae/Reynolds was a disaster (not that they were Co, but a Asst HC, same thing.)

But BYU is definitely an OC away. Two bad these Ds, last year and this, have been effectively. Shame. Bt don't know who BYU would get. Maybe Vai might know somebody.

$1M vs $3-5M is not 25% and even if BYU hired Nick Saban who would not take the job for any amount of money - that does not address the demographics issue that hinder BYU from attracting enough speedy, athletic DBs, RBs, and WRs.

Two or three more generations of missionary work may finally solve that.

Until then - try to appreciate what you have.

Bib; I agree with the concept that Byu can't recruit the athletes we need for an explosive offense. But maybe there is a way.. The one position where you need speed on defense is the CB. Byu traditionally has struggled to get fast athletic CB's. But along comes Bronco and after some hiccups he seems to have found a way to succeed on defense without the best athletes. His scheme of bend but don't break added with the ability to get good LB's has been a recipe for a good defense without the speedy athletes we can't get.

Is there such a scheme that Byu could find that would make them great on offense despite being able to recruit the typical athletes needed to do so?

Makes me wonder.....Easy for the cougs to get big OLman. Easy to recruit good QB's. Hard to get RB's & WR's . IMO Boise ala the mid 2000's is the model that we should be looking at.

Where's the option for "When a realistic candidate that would actually accept the job is discovered"? Face it - there are very few options to replace bronco out there that meet the qualifications at BYU AND that would be better than bronco - none of which are likely to take the job.

Bronco's wagon is hitched to Taysom imo. Much like the Riley situation I think he sticks with his guy until either it works or the season is definitely lost. I think there's still time to wait out the season at least. We always get owned by Utah and the VA game was kind of fluky. My bet is that we play Wisconsin, GT, and ND all to the wire. The question is will it be TH getting us those wins?
S

Yes, let's fire the winningest, by %, coach in the history of the school.

I personally think that bringing Anae back may end up costing Bronco his job though. Anae isn't a good enough coordinator.

Maybe we should also include "when multiple players are breaking the rules/honor code" Followed by games lost when we were favored to win. Lose to utah.

This season has the potential to be a perfect storm for coach Mendenhall to start catching some heat.
