BYU needs an offense that complements the defense

...which means that BYU needs to run a ball-control offense. I really don't understand the motivation behind GFGH because the team doesn't have the speed necessary to make that system work.



...if BYU wants to win then it needs an offense that protects the defense. This means that the offense should be designed to take a lot of time and to get first downs. Run on 1st down, run on second down...and get into a manageable 3rd down where there is the option to run...or throw a quick slant to the big WRs/TEs on the roster. The team should play to its strengths...not try some gimmick that the rest of the college football world is adopting...

The problem isn't team speed. The problem is an extremely inefficient QB.



GFGH can only work if the offense is making plays and throws. Right now that's just not happening.

Regardless of an inefficient QB...I think that teams will just adapt because in order to run a GFGH system...you have to have speed (e.g., Oregon, Auburn).



I think that BYU needs to cater to its strengths...which is a slow grind it out style.

False. Oregon and Auburn weren't/aren't great because of team speed - although it helps. They're great because they're QBs are/were so efficient at throwing the ball.



Oregon's PER right now is 179.11 (BYU is 50-1 since 1984 w/ a PER above 179 - the lone loss was USU in 1993 when Walsh threw 619 yds and 6 TDs and the defense gave up 58 pts).



Oregon last year was 158.18 (BYU is 116-9-1 since 1984 w/ a PER above 158).

In 2011, Oregon was 158.93 and they were at 151.72 in 2010 (BYU's record is 131-12-1).



When Auburn won the National Championship following the 2010 season their season PER was 180.52.



You just don't lose when you throw the ball efficiently. And you score a TON of points.



BYU's single biggest problem - just like it's been for 3 1/4 years - is an inefficient QB. Until BYU gets efficient QB play on a consistent basis they will continue to struggle offensively. It doesn't matter what kind of system they run.



You MUST have an efficient passing game. The same goes for a spread option, triple option, pro-set, power I. It doesn't matter your offense style of play. If you have poor and inefficient QB play, your team will suck. The offense will struggle to move the ball, score points and win games.



Fix the QB position and EVERYTHING changes.
