Williams Injury Update

According to BYU's official website, Jamaal suffered a concussion and a severe stinger. He was kept overnight for observation, but he his been discharged from the hospital. Looks like his prognosis is good for a full recovery. However, with the way he runs, I'm concerned about the potential for future injuries and possible long term effects.



At any rate I don't think he should play this Friday.

Most people don't know what stingers are, but they hear about them in football so much they just assume it's a temporary thing, but they can be absolutely frightening, and if they are bad enough it can be weeks of recovery. It may not be a spinal cord injury, but it is still a spinal injury.

Him playing this Friday will be a small (but certainly welcomed) miracle. Glad we will still have him 'cause we sure as heck need him.

Anyone know how long you're supposed to wait after a severe concussion before you play again?



IIRC, if you suffer a concussion and get another one before the first one's fully healed then you run into complications like migraines, light sensitivity, memory problems, and personality changes.



Concussions and lingering heath issues are the worth things about football. The fact that these kids are risking their health for our entertainment is the biggest reason why I think we should hold back on our criticism of amateur athletes.



I think we're a better team when JW is on the field and makes us more competitive, but is it worth it to have him risk his future by coming back too soon? He's just 18 and has a lot to look forward to.

BYU should take a conservative approach as should Williams. The next opponent is a worthy opponent, but Hine and Algernon Brown mixed in with the more experienced guys could be good for the future.
