Maybe Utah deserves some respect...

I get the frustration. I have used the terms puketah, ewetard, pukes, etc...within the last 24 hours. After another loss, and getting a little introspective, it dawns on me that maybe I should be more respectful of my fellow beings. I know some of them have mocked our religion, but many, if not most, have not. Their team is full of good people LDS and non-LDS people alike, and if you hear anti-LDS ranting, you can just remind them that their coach and probably half their players are good LDS folks, so they might want to pick a different team to support if their goal is to root against the Church. You can remind them that Brigham Young also founded their school. In short, maybe it is time to be the bigger people in the rivalry.



Utah has beat us four times in a row. You have to give them credit for that. We don't have to cut them down to build ourselves up. We are proud of what our young men represent, though there are certainly issues that need to be resolved to be a more successful football team (such as perhaps benching the QB).



Maybe if we all just let it be about the football game, we could heal some of the wounds between the fans. When someone wants to rub it in, perhaps just congratulating them on their win, you know, the way players do on the field after the game, would go a long way to healing the vitriol of the rivalry and getting it back to just being good natured ribbing about a football game. Honestly, I think we need a two year hiatus to get some perspective. This is not life and death. It is a tear Utah is on. But this too shall pass.

Utah deserves respect for being able to get up for big games, including the rivalry. But Kyle looking like Nick Saban when plays Bronco doesn't make him Nick Saban. The U, under Kyle, lost several games they shouldn't have back in the MWC. And it's not like they're taking the PAC 10.2 by storm.



The make up of the Ute fan base is a different topic altogether. And the point isn't that there aren't "good" people among the fan base. The point is, first, the Ute fan base has increasingly grown non-LDS in the last 10-20 years. Second, tthere's a rather loud, anti-LDS element, in that fan base. One that is reflective of a certain liberal, secular, anti-LDS element at the U of U itself. And, third, the active LDS Ute fans often turn a blind eye or excuse this element among their fellow Ute fans. Fourth, they also refuse to see the conflict in rooting against the school that is synonymous with their church in the eyes of most people.

Most sensible thread since the game ended.



Utah put more points on the scoreboard by the end of the game. They won. They kept our defense on the field for most of the first half, which seemed to help their running game in the second half.



In the past when we were in the same conference and played at the end of the season after playing the same opponents, we could look back at prior opponents and have a pretty good idea who the superior team was. This year, we can't look back and say that since we beat AFA and SDSU who beat Utah, and we beat Wyoming by a bigger margin than Utah did, that we should have beat them.



Utah won the game. There are still more games to play, but Utah may end up looking like the better team by the end of the season.



One possible reason is recruiting. I think BYU had a bit of a recruiting slump following the Mtn debacle--hardly anyone saw BYU games at the tail end of their time in the MWC. We got a lot of the athletes we targeted, but our talent pool was maybe a bit shallower because we were targeting high school kids who came to the BYU summer camps. I think recruiting will get a little better in a couple years now that almost every game is on ESPN or BYUtv and we're getting a lot more exposure. Maybe Utah ramped up a little quicker now they're in the PAC 12 or because RMs make up a smaller percentage of their team compared to us--who can say.



I grew up on Jim McMahon and Steve Young and am used to seasons where we had just 1 or 2 losses, but I would still view this season as a pretty good year if we end up with an 8-5 season after a bowl game even if BYU lost to Utah. Even 7-6 wouldn't too bad with the way Utah State and Wisconsin are playing.



Not every season is a championship season.

That took balls to write what you did on this forum. I respect that. You will probably get crucified by many on here for it but I couldn't agree more. It football!
