Anae Sucks

I'm going to go ahead and say what many are thinking: Anae sucks as an OC. I'm sure he's a great guy and all but he can't run an offense.

No excuses now. This whole offense is his doing right down to the person holding the play cards.

Back in 2009 we had a stable full of NFL talent on the offense and we were still unable to get any futher than the Las Vegas bowl. I see no reason why it would be any different now.

He's running the same vanilla offense he did 3 years ago. It's just faster and the TEs are string beans as opposed to thoroughbreds. Nothing has changed.

Never like to see someone lose their job; so, I hope he takes a long hard look in the mirror. Otherwise, he better start updating his resume.

The whole coaching staff was fired a year ago and new guys brought in. Same result. Maybe the problem has more to do with the level of recruiting that BYU is bringing in. This problem has not been around just this year.

Same result because they brought back the same guy...

BYU's recruiting class has gotten better in the last year. The slop we're being subjected to is a result of poor coaching.

Sorry, I'm not buying the less talented angle. We didn't have world beaters in the 80's and 90's when we routinely dominated the Utes. We did have great QB play, however...something that has been lacking since...Oh yeah, Max Hall. You know, the last QB to beat the Utes.

Tip to help you understand more clearly

Utah has a much better team the last decade or more than they had back when we beat them routinely. Vastly improved.

And, yes, we had more accurate passers.

Another tip for Gunk

By what objective measure to you conclude that recruiting is getting better? It is getting worse. Reminds me of you telling us basketball was on the rise - post Jimmer. Anyway basketball starts soon and you will be happier since you more readily accept disappointments in that sport.

I don't disagree that their team has improved. We can't walk over them like we once did, and that is difficult for many to swallow. With great QB play we should be winning as many as we are losing. But we don't have great QB play to make up for the turnovers. You can either have great QB play or win the turnover battle. We have done neither, and as such are now on a 4 game losing streak to the Utes. I did not mean to imply that Utah has not gotten much, much better. It started under McBride, was taken to new heights under Meyer, and Whittingham has kept them as a strong team...probably a notch down from the Meyer years. So long as Whittingham remains the coach, it will be a dogfight every year. And we will either have to win the turnover battle or have awesome QB play. I don't believe we can get there with Taysom, unfortunately. Three games of sub 50% completion tells me that he doesn't have IT in the throwing game...but he definitely has IT in the running game. It is Anae's job to figure out what to do with that, but I think he should treat him like Florida uses Trey Burton. Use everyone's strengths.

Bib what was our recruiting class ranked in 2008? What is it ranked now? I suppose one cannot have any faith in stars and rankings by 3rd party organizations.

Utah may have a few more horses in the barn than us, but it's not leaps and bounds. Besides, the Texas game certainly shows all the athletic talent in the world is meaningless unless utilized the right way. By your logic, Texas should have won because they have better recruits. Kwhitt does a good job getting his team ready for BYU. He may not do so well against OSU, but has the Y down.

You clearly don't follow what I say on the basketball forum as I am just as critical over there than I am here. Not my fault Rose runs a more successful program. By your logic, Utah should have a better basketball team than BYU because they have more African American players than BYU. Polys don't play hoops...except for Kaufusi. So is that why BYU basketball beat the Utes last season because BYU had more Polynesians? LOL!

Come back and talk to me about how much better BYU football is than basketball when football beats Utah, a middle of the pack Pac12 team...at best.

Anae is just Bronco on offense. Good against bad teams, but the schemes get us bad losses against teams with a pulse.

I just want to see what happens when we put a QB out there who can confidently put the ball on the money at a good clip. It's been 4 years. This is freaking BYU. 4 years in a row of disastrous throwing.

Interestingly, we outrushed Utah by 50%, with each team gaining 3.9 yards per carry. We only passed for 13 less yards, and that's with Anderson's 74 yard reception. Hill was 5.4 yards per attempt; Travis' Wilson was 7.8 yards per attempt. Overall, we outgained Utah. Our D gave up two very long plays or we almost doubled up on Utah. We missed a field goal and did not convert a touchdown on first and 2. That was the game. Does that mean Anae sucks? Not in my book. The kids played hard. Hill was still off--there's much more work to be done--but this offense moved it better than last year and that was with losing Jamaal. Am I happy we lost? No. But I'm not cutting my wrists.

I'm going to keep stating what should already be obvious to everyone who's been paying attention....

Bronco and Anae hit their peak in 2006.

They still had good teams in 2007-2009 but those teams under-performed, considering the talent they had, and it was due to coaching; first and foremost.

And since 2010, it's been all downhill.

Bronco is a very good defensive coordinator but not a great head coach. And BYU needs a great head coach if it's goal really is to regain national prominence.

Anae is a sub-par offensive coordinator. It's the same story all over again. Very "vanilla," predictable, and repetitive play calling. And one can't just blame it on the players, considering we had these same problems under Anae when we had Hall, Unga, Pitta, Collie, etc.

I'm going to agree with Bib. It starts with talent. Coaching certainly matters too (see Texas vs. Utah).

These are the averages of scout and rivals of the last 5 recruiting classes. I picked the last 5 as these are the players we will likely see on the field this year (except for BYU).

2009

Texas 6 (scout 7, rivals 5)

GT- 41 (32, 49)

Virginia - 41 (49, 33)

MTSU 95 (93, 96)

Nevada 100 (108, 92)

Utah State 110 (115, 104)

5 Year Average:

Texas 8

ND 14

Utah 42

Wisconsin 51

GT 52

BYU 54

Houston 59

BSU 65

Nevada 100

MTSU 102

Utah State 106

Notes: BSU and Utah have outrecruited BYU in each of the last 3 years. Rivals must hate Wisconsin. I didn't account for missions so who knows where BYU's relative position should actually be. I think it is fair to say that BYU will be about middle of the pack in terms of talent level of the teams they face this year, but only a couple of teams will be substantially more talented (ND and Texas).

BYU's recruiting class has gotten better in the last year. The slop we're being subjected to is a result of poor coaching.

To me, it is a talent issue. Utah's DBs have been consistently better than our WRs. Both their OL and DL have been better than ours as well.

Thanks for pulling the data. Data trumps emotional outbursts eveey time.

Adding emphasis pertinent to my original comment:

1. Look at the trend. BYU recruiting is not getting better, it is getting worse while Utah recruiting is getting better at our expense - especially in Utah. We need to change that. Imagine if BYU had gotten their tight end whose father played baseball for BYU as just one example. NFL players is another indicator of who has the most talent.

2. BYU talenr level indicates that the coaches are slightly over achieving with that talent.

3. We should be putting heat on the coaches to recapture the hearts of in-state recruits and the Polynesian Pipeline.

We were better 2009 and 2010 and those are the players that are now on the field. Anyone watching that game could see that we were at least evenly matched with likely more talent and potential on our end. For the most part, we outplayed the U. We had more trips to the red zone, more overall yardage, etc.

But the playcalling was bad throughout and atrocious in the red zone. Game management has always been bad under Bronco. Our QB has been horrible the past 4 years.

If any one of these issues was resolved, we'd probably have won 2-3 games vs the Utes in the past 4 years and won an extra game or two besides that each year. This is what is so frustrating! A few simple fixes would take us up a notch or two immediately, especially offensive play-calling/scheming and QB play. But we just can't seem to do that under Bronco (or Anae) and I am tired of waiting for it.

We had better talent on the field. That may not be true when we meet in 2016.

Missed it again Jacksonman. That 2010 class was rated high due to a whole bunch of people who are long gone and a bust or two like Apo and the guy that went to TCU and just came back but not playing - Tfab.

I see, thanks to the data submitted, that our recruiting is sucking even more than it has in the past for football. Who does the recruiting? Looks to me like Anae is just as bad at recruiting as he is at play calling.

I know, you're going to say Doman is responsible for the drop in 2011 and 2012 or somehow claim Anae wasn't responsible, but players are recruited a year or two prior graduating, back when Anae was the OC. At the end of the day, no matter how you spin it this comes down to coaching or the lack thereof.

If excusing poor performance on BYU's part to "superior" talent on Utah's part helps you sleep at night, fine. But I hope that isn't the attitude our coaches are taking. If Bronco is at all serious about competing for a NC as he claims he is he is headed in the wrong direction. BYU's talent pool is limited (we get that); so, BYU needs to make up for that on the scheme side of things. Running repeatedly on 1st and 2nd down to the point where my Mom recognizes the pattern isn't very innovative.

Coaching is responsible for putting the players in the best situation to win given their skill sets. Anae and company are not doing that.

You seem hung up on my bias towards basketball. It's funny because you're the one that keeps bringing it up on here. Go back and look at the thread last year where we compared the basketball teams performance to footballs - I said compared to football, basketball is on the rise, acknowledging the spike we had with Jimmer and the dip we've had in the WCC. Still, over the last 10 years basketball has done more on a national level than football could dream of.

And, speaking of the Ute basketball team and horrible coaching. The Ute's demise at hoops has to do with coaching not talent. You need look no further than how the Ute transfers played against BYU once they got out of a horrible coaching situation.

Talent is meaningless if utilized incorrectly. Go ask Texas...
C
Cougarbib
You can't rewrite history. Your claim was that BYU was on the rise. Period.

And, other than Jimmer - the nation does not even know BYU has a basketball team. Well, old guys, especially living in Boston remember Ainge.

Try an experiment. Go to an airport anywhere east of Colorado - ask people wearing basketball apparell from a program east of Colorado. Say BYU Basketball - tell me the first five names that come to mind. Let me know how often anyone comes up with more than Jimmer or Danny - or maybe Davies re zippergate.

Then try that for football. You will get an equal or slightly better result every time.

You are right about one thing. Coaches are responsible for recruiting. But BYU has never had a coach any better at recruiting.

But sure - go ahead and pay coaches less than half what SMU pays their coaches and tell them to make up for the honor code and cultural constraints with scheming.

Oh and ask them to do it vs anyone and anywhere.

There is a reason why it is difficult to find great coaches that would even consider this job.

And did you notice how Brandon Davies immediately improved after leaving BYU? Might have been better coaching. Might have been better supporting cast. Maybe both.

BYU football coaches are certainly better than dearly departed Ute baskwtball coaches. Lame comparison. Desperation shot.
