Help thou my unbelief

There are many things that are causing me to scratch my head and ask who is the real BYU team this year. After watching the TX game and the Yewt game, it appeared that the team regressed, but more importantly, the timing is incredible. I understand that losing Spencer Hadley was demoralizing, and definitely negatively affected our D - although Tyler Beck did well with 10 tackles. The JW loss was scary and definitely impacted the team emotionally as well as losing one of our major offensive weapons. What concerns me are the following:



1. The horrid play of our OL. They were man handled by a defense that have up 51 points to OSU. They gave up 5 sacks and never got a sustained push off the line to set up our running game.

2. Our WRs sans Hoffman, are not focused on catching the ball - too many drops on catchable balls. I saw improvement when Ben Cahoon was WR coach, not sure that Guy Holliday has improved their play.

3. Taysom Hill needs to improve his accuracy and hit the open man or this will be a long season. Currently he is playing like a strong-armed RN - the D doesn't respect his passing ability but he is healthy.

4. The predictability of Anae is puzzling. Run, Run up the middle and throw pass to wideout. How innovative is that?

5. The D-line needs to be more physical. Only one sack against Wilson and with that protection, he was able to complete a high percentage of passes and make big plays. The D focused on taking away Wilson's running game but forgot about applying pressure to hurry his throws.

6. The DBs need to be opportunistic in catching errant throws and creating turnovers. Again, two dropped passes could have changed momentum.

7. Sorensen needs to hit clutch FG and be money inside the blue zone.

8. This is a team that still hasn't found itself and needs major course correction. I just hope the coaches can find the TX mojo to inspire better play from the players - especially OL or we face a mediocre season with sure losses to BSU, GT, ND, WI.

9. Time for Bronco to start showing up on the third game of the season (1-8) and get the team focused on finishing stronger out of the gate and quit playing timid against the Yewts. If they don't fix the problems that we had last year and against VA, it's time to re-evaluate direction of program.

Great summary. Agreed on OL, receivers (although I do think Ridley is solid---this was the first drop I believe he has ever had), TH accuracy, predictability, pressuring Wilson, converting in the blue zone, etc. The team absolutely needs to find itself and Bronco has to get his teams to show up early in the season. 1-8 on game 3 is absurd. Hard to believe even.

What is so hard about it?



Texas has ranked 113th in Total Defense in the last 15 games (before they played BYU).



Utah has a much better defense, probably in the 40s or 50s.



People that think that Texas was a big win don't watch college football. Texas likely won't even make a bowl game this year. They have been SDSU caliber since Colt McCoy graduated. The Texas win was a fluke. Against UVA and the Yew we are seeing who BYU truly is. Air Force with chubby lineman.

I think your number 9 hit it on the head. Against Texas we saw a team that was not intimidated. Texas may have had a bad defense but BYU came out confident and played with that confidence. BYU came out nervous and intimidated against utah. I don't know what it is but since 2011, BYU has not played utah with confidence and it shows up in the final score. If the BYU team that showed up against Texas showed up against utah we would have had a different outcome to the game.



I can't stand Kwhit, but you have to give it up to him when it comes to getting his teams ready to play. Bronco needs to figure out a way to get his players to play with more confidence against, frankly, a doormat Pac 12 team. This weak minded timid football sucks and I am sick of it.

Correction: Getting his teams ready to play BYU. Whitt is perfectly willing to give up losses to terrible teams in order to beat BYU. This was one year that BYU and Bronco should have been willing to do the same.

No. There is no hope. I've been telling everyone that for months now and no one wanted to listen.

I disagree with this. In 2006 BYU came out and put up 2 scores on utah in the first quarter, they looked very confident. The fake punt took the wind out of BYU's sails in that game and they had to fight to win. In 2007, BYU played with confidence, they didn't play very well due to Max Hall's separated shoulder and Harvey Unga uncharacteristically dropping some balls that would have gone for scores but they played with confidence. Ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith. Well, it has been tried and tried and tried and tried again when it comes to BYU football versus Utah. I honestly think it will take KWhitt or Bronco being gone before we get the mental edge back. This two year break came just in time. Perhaps in two years, our Freshman will remember this painful loss, or the new players that come in will have more of a mental edge to overcome the dreaded Utes and swing the series back our way for a while.

We better quit letting U out recruit us every year or expect more of the same. U is a lower third PAC team. BYU would be about the same.



If we had just won the battle for Jake Murphy - that would have won a few more games the last 4 years.



The Utes have a better QB, better RB than what we had left after JDub went down, and comparabe to him, a faster receiver than any we have, a far better tight end, and a better OL. Special teams are evenly matched. Our run defenses are evenly matched. Our pass defense is better.



If we could pass even respectably - the game was ours.



Anae summed it up for our offense - inexperience.



I also think KWhitt manages the clock better. We should have gone for it on 4th and 1 late in the 4th quarter. We should not have wasted that time-out on 4th and forever on the 2nd to last drive. We needed 1 more timeout when U got the ball, we held, but clock was under a minute.

The hope that I have is that Hine is going to take it to the house one of these days. He has looked solid during the last two games on KO returns, and his big gains have been called back on penalties. He is due for a big one in the future.



I believe that our WRs, QB and RBs can get on the same page with time - but it has to be sooner rather than later as USU, BSU and the other schools are going to play Hill just the way UT did and force him to connect on his passes.



What I have endured, and to not have to endure, is another season of poor OL play. The last thing we need is more injured QBs, RBs and hurt linemen. Please hear our prayers and rain down on the just (I.e. believers). In the case of the O coaches and players, be doers of the word not Sayers only.

Trying to nitpick problems with this team is like shuffling chairs on the Titanic. Start with the big picture - the guys who are leading this team and have been for years now. Bronco and Anae hit their peak early on (2006), but since then it's been all downhill. Even in the years with Hall, Unga, Collie, and Pitta, we got blown out by Utah, TCU, Florida State, etc.

Here is what you are missing - King Coug - in the big picture. Collie, Pitta, Hall, and Unga was certainly one of our more talented teams. Two legit NFL players and 2 marginal ones. And you jump to the conclusion that they should thetefore go undefeated. Elite teams put this many players in the NFL annually, meaning.the 2 and 3 deep ate also loaded with talented players and they have it on both sides of the ball.



BYU - has talent - rated below U, TCU, FSU, etc., pretty much every year. The main difference between BSU and BYU is the schedule.



This is not going to change until a lot more African Americans either join tje Church or otherwise emrace the Honor Code like Jamaal Williams. When we have 3 like him stacked up at RB, 3 or 4 more at WR, and 4 more at CB, and 3 QBS that are mobile and can throw, and 2 or 3 tight ends like Pitta and Harline and George and a few NFL stud linemen on botj sides of the ball and Fui and Manase at FB along with our great linebackers

I'm as realistic, or more so, than just about anyone. I've been right there with you all along about the need for BYU to schedule strategically. But it's hard to argue that BYU should not have gone undefeated once in 2006-2009. It had just as much talent as the other non-BCS teams who had done so. But the coaching wasn't there.

All that talent? In terms of top end talent, BYU didn't have much and certainly didn't have as much as some of those teams that went undefeated.



BYU had 6 players drafted from those 2006-2009 teams (taken in the 2007-2011 drafts).



TCU had 15.

Utah had 14.

Boise State had 9.



Arizona, who we went 1-2 against during that time period, had 15.

UCLA, who we went 2-1 against during that time period, had 10.

Data speaks volumes. Objective. Truthful.



BYU needs to recapture the hearts of Utah recruits and The Polynesian Pipeline - without sacrificing Honor Code compliance.
