Wanted: A QB...oh and some WRs

Going on 4 years now without a legit QB at BYU. I believe there is potential with Hill but for every run play they practice they better be practicing 5 pass plays. Guy can not throw. He made Wilson look like an All American.

Is it too much to ask for a QB that is...well...a QB?

And, while we are at it, some receivers that can catch would be great.

The team has reflected it's head coach for the last few years now. A very good too-to-great defense and a lackluster offense. That's what Bronco has done to BYU football.

But we have to remember, even with true pocket passers like Beck and Hall, we still suffered from Anae's play calling.

BYU does have a QB... his name is Ammon Olsen. BYU also had a QB last year... his name was James Lark. See a pattern?

Agreed on all counts! Was screaming for Lark all last year, and kept hearing through Spring and Fall this year how much better AO looked and led the offense and kept wondering what TH had done to get the starting job tied up without a true competition.

It is coaching! It starts at the top! Time for change!

And whose decision was it to fire the WR coach, the one group who really showed improvement last year?!

Robert Anae. Who was Bronco's decision.

Position filled?

The thread should have been titled, Wanted: An offensive line. Our Oline play was the reason for the struggles by Thill and the receivers. Our Oline play may have improved but the reason for the success now is the coaches are finally scheming around the poor oline play instead of just expecting them to step up on gameday.

Oh yeah. But Fried Butter is also right. The O-line was a major part of the problem. With some health and scheming, things look a lot better.

I've been saying it since the Texas game--Hill just had a hiccup in his form that was most likely something he picked up rehabbing his knee. Once he sorted that one issue out, he is now the QB most of us thought/hoped he could become after watching bits and pieces of what he could do last season.

Whatever it is, i'm hoping the Hill i've watched the last 3 games is here to stay.

As long as the coaches can create schemes to keep the defense out of his face long enough for him to go through his reads and make his throws, he will be fine.

Doesn't that work for every QB at every level?

And yes, you are correct, it is important at all levels to protect your QB in order for him to perform well, that is why I was getting frustrated with the comments on this board when his accuracy was low at the beginning of the year, because most of the issue was scheme and Oline related.

I second your comment and agree full heartedly.....

OL was poor and still is relatively poor. Nevertheless, Hill was not throwing well. The problem was not due to having too little time to figure out who to throw to. He was usually throwing to an open man - and then missing badly.

He continues to be slow making throws - waits until a receiver cuts instead of having confidence to anticipate cuts. But his accuracy is much better and more consistent.

I am starting to believe that annual slow starts for BYU QBs is due to BYU practicing to "not get hurt". Heaps never embraced contact and threw erratic under pressure. Hill is not afraid of contact, but was not used to the pressure.

Further, footwork for running is different than footwork for throwing and Hill seemed to not have made those subtlties instinctive.

He may have picked up some bad habits while rehabbing that were not corrected in Fall Camp due to lack of contact and pressure on the QB.

I never thought Hill should be replaced as starter, but did feel that BYU should take a "look see"at AO in a live situation and let him run the offense.

You usuallt get no advance notice when you need your back-up. BYU has been extremely poor under Bronco re having a back-up ready enough and knowing which back-up has it and which does not.

I hope Houston implodes and allows BYU to get AO some real experience. Texas, MTSU, USU, and GT remain missed opportunities to do that. Now, opportunities seem less likely vs BSU, ND, and Wisconsin.

Well - Idaho and Nevada.

And yet opposing backup QBs tend to have breakout games against us.

Houston is not playing their backup QB. They're playing their starter. He's got 145 attempts this year and played in all five games. The fewest attempts he has this year is 15 in the first game. He's got 30+ in the last four games. There is plenty of film on this kid.

He won't surprise the BYU D with what he can do.

I realize that the Houston QB is now the starter and has been for quite some time. Not sure why you brought that up in response to the previous poster.

But glad you did. The Houston freshman was the back-up at the start of the season and when the starter left the team after multiple concussions - Houston had their freshman ready to go already and he has played very well - although he is about to get tested by a better defense.

That is my point - whether it is fall camp approach, or better use of garbage minutes, our opponents seem to do a better job of having someone ready to step in. And not for just the one game surprise element.

Texas for example. We made their starter struggle a couple of years ago. So they bring in Ash and beat us. He became their starter shortly after that.

Fast forward - we knock Ash out. They pop in another QB who playesd as well or better. He is now the starter and they are winning.

BYU missed the opportunity to fully prepare and test Nelson in 2009.

BYU missed the opportunity to prepare and test Lark in 2011 and until too late in 2012.

BYU was bringing Hill along nicely, but Nelson injuries accelerated that - which was working fine - until they injured him on bungled clock management and play calling.

And halfway through 2013 - AO has not been prepared at all. Hopefully Hill continues to endure the pounding - AO is not ready, most likely.

I agree with you regarding Houston spiff. What irritates me is that we haven't prepared our backups, yet our opponents break in new QBs against us with pretty good success.

I agree with BOTH of the previous posts. BYU's QB problems (which finally seem to be resolved) go back to 2009, when BYU played in NINE games decided by 17 or more points (including five decided by 24 or more points) and BYU had their backup QB (Riley Nelson) throw all of 10 passes.

BYU has struggled preparing their backups. But that said, I think BYU can't afford to develop their backup at the QB position right now. Taysom Hill is still relatively inexperienced. He only has eight career starts and has just over 250 career pass attempts. He still needs the vast majority of the game reps.

Maybe next year, BYU can afford to make greater allowances for in-game development of the QB.
