Will BYU pass for more than 200 yards?

Utah will most assuredly be selling out to stop the run, that means we should have some great mismatches with our tall, athletic receivers. But BYU has struggled to move the ball through the air this year, will this be the game where BYU comes out throwing the ball well and effectively?

I think this week we actually have a fairly balanced attack. I predict 230 yds passing. Not the BYU of old, but enough to put the Utes to bed for three years.

Not quite but it may be close.

In the two games Hill started last year (Hawaii, USU), he had a 63.2% completion rate (actually had a higher completion rate against the better defense - 66.6%), with 3 TDs and 2 INT's. If he gets back to his Hawaii completion rate of 57.1%, BYU wins the game by 21 points, and he has closer to 300 yards passing. (His Rating in those 2 games was 124.64)



I'm not sure he gets back to that rate though. I'm really worried about this game, much like I was worried about the Virginia game this year.

No. The Utes annualy have an NFL Dline, so our Oline will have their hands full with just them - allowing the linebackers to drop back into coverage and hide. Their safeties can hit big and their corners can play man coverage against all our wide receivers effectively, except Hoff, who they will just double the entire game.



it will be rough. The only way we beat them is if the run is going early, and they suck up tight. Then we *might* have a prayer, but with Hills inaccuracy and our WRs inability to create separation (except Hoff who will be doubled, if they even need that against him) it will be a rough day for the passing game.

I think the cougs will pass for 200+.

After the UVA game they focused on the O-line and it payed off vs Texas. The last 2 weeks the passing game has had a lot of attention. I would like to think that it will be better for that reason alone. Taysom seems capable of having a good completion %, I think that going fast and a make shift line have made his passing look worse than it is. Hopefully a little practice and refinement is the answer.

The lack of respect for Taysom's arm has been comical, but mostly from the BYU fans. The UVA game had 8 drops! 10 drops according to one of the DesNews articles, I believe. That plus the rough conditions made for some ugly numbers. Against UT he made clutch throws and some bad ones. Think John Beck/Max Hall sophomore years, people. Taysom is the real deal and (as I have said since last year) will go down as one of the best BYU QB's in history.

The thread is about Sept 21, 2013 - not next year or the year after or even a week from now. He will improve. The question is how much improvement we see tomorrow.



If he throws like last season, we will probably do just fine in this game.



And - as Jake Heaps demonstrated, here and at KU, lack of consistency re ball location and touch gets you more "drops".



Yes. 200 yards tomorrow.

I think he will be forced to pass for 200+. No question that :utard: will load the box and that will open some quick passes. The quick passes will open the run game.

Maybe John Beck but not Max Hall. Through three games in his sophomore season, Hall's stat line was 90 for 148, 1216 YD, 8 TD, 3 INT for a NCAA PER of 143.6 (NFL passer rating of 96.6).

Yes. Taysom Hill and the Coug receiving corps will out-perform expectations.

Texas' D has been proven rechid this year by the fact that 'Ole Miss rang up 44 on the Longhorns... in Texas... and outscored them in the 2nd half 27-0... with an offense that has stunk for the past several seasons. The Cougs won't be able to run on Utah like they did Texas... look for about 200 yards on the ground total and about 175 through the air for a total offensive output of 375 yards. Utah will get over 400 and will have fewer turnovers and thus, the difference in the game. I think Hill throws at least 2 crucial picks.

Another concern... last week, Oregon State was coming off an embarrassing loss to Eastern Washington and what did they do... took the Utes into OT in their own crib and beat 'em. They were a wounded animal and looking for redemption. With the Utes losing to a team that lost to Eastern Washington, they're going to come into LES a wounded animal and looking to redeem themselves from last week's OT loss... when this same scenario has played out in years' past, the outcome has not been good for the Cougs.

True - but - a certain Coug linebacker has promised his team that if they beat the Yewts, he'll take them to Vegas and party till the sun comes up. ;) I plan on being there. How can you beat that?

Thanks for the clarification Spiff - wasn't aware OSU had played Hawaii. I don't think it takes away though from the extra motivation and redemption the Utes will have and be seeking.

Also... wind may become a factor tomorrow night and affect the kicking game... a strong cold front is expected to arrive Sunday morning in Utah and as a result, south winds will become strong late Saturday afternoon/evening. Might see those field goal post flags horizontal come game time.
