What I learned from the Utah Game.

Utah's dline "may" be overrated. OSU traveled just 7 olinemean and had lost like 80 of them. playing walk on, etc. i don't think i ever saw mannion rushed. That will be different with us, but it is encouraging.



wilson is still young and will make mistakes. game still seemed a little fast for him. byu should take advantage of this. he was throwing the ball all over the place. osu could not stop him. but he threw three picks. at that point erickson clamped up and just ran, which they couldn't even do on OSU.



utah's running game is mediocre to not good. they will not be able to run on us. wilson was forced to throw to keep them in that game. good news is that he wasn't able to do that without turning it over. erickson doesn't seem to completely trust him yet, hence the two crappy running plays in overtime and also the whole first quarter with no first down. lost of crappy running plays.



wilson wont run amok on us with his legs. osu's linebackers ran like molassses. they looked like zed mendanhalls out there trying to chase him down (no offense to Zed, love him and he was great for BYU but not as a linebacker). we have enough speed on the edges that him running around won't work against us. vannoy, hadley, and fua are not going to let that happen.



Utah will probably run more up tempo against us. utah will want anders v povey match ups all night long. the make those more likely they will go up tempo more often so daniel doesn't have time to switch. wilson will connect with anderson for a couple huge chucnk plays. anderson is lighting fast.



utah's secondary is better than they are getting credit for. mannion and co were just that good. utah usually had great coverage but a perfect pass beats great coverage every time. our wide receivers are not that good aside from hoffman. utah will be able to focus on the run and cover our receivers pretty well.



I learned that I think utah matches up well against byu. the strength of their d aligns with the strength of our o and the strength of their o aligns with the weakness of our d.



In the end it will come down to Taysom and the Oline. Will the oline allow us to be effective running the ball to a point where Taysom is not put in a position where he is forced to be one dimensional by throwing it. if that happens i do not believe that our wide receievers nor he are good enough to throw against utah without resulting in the turnovers that really nearly always determine who wins this game.



good news is that our d is going to make utah one dimensional and i hope it results in some picks. utah will be succesful with some large chunk plays. with a little luck we will hold them low enough that our offense can outscore them.



toss up. i think utah has to like this match up but it is at our place, we have had an extra week to prepare and we are going to be just as hungry as they are. they desperately need this game and we are desperate to win this game. should be a fantastic game. neither team is going to roll over on this one.



First thing I am going to look to is if our oline is getting push in the run game and if our defense is getting pressure with four or less. oline is key to this game. i don't want taysom in a situation where he feels he has to throw it over and over. that is not who we are at this point. i hope that utah's dline is overrrated which they looked on saturday.

1. They are. They got no push vs. OSU. Even with blitzes, they struggled. Mannion had all day to pick them apart.

3. Agreed. We are much faster on the edges than OSU. Plus, Wilson is not shifty at all. He might get a first down run a time or two, but about it. We'll contain him like we did Ash. We are going to go after that kid.



4. I think they'll slow it down since we'll be so up tempo that their D will be gassed big time. They go uptempo, it plays into our hands as well. We are better conditioned than they are.



5. I agree, however, after a while of getting torched, you have to wonder how good they are. Most throws were underneath, or crosses, then guys ran forever due to bad angles and pursuit by that Utah D. Mannion did hit some sideline routes though, but I think BYU will use Hoff similarly. The U DBs never looked for the ball, and just played the man. Gotta attack that.



6. WIth this BYU scheme, this will always be the case. Read-option is all about hte Oline and the QB reads. Taysom will need to be on his game.



7. We are not good at forcing turnovers because we zone it, but we also keep it all infront of us. If we force picks, it will be due to pressure.

I wish I was as confident as you lawboy.

First time in several years where I actually think BYU has the mental edge. Our guys are jacked up for it. I think we can punk them this year, if the Oline shows up like they did vs. Texas. Because I know our D is coming to play.



By the way, word is that Hogan might be back this week, and if he is, he will probably start at Boundary Corner. He was shooting for this game. So the back up might start, not hte 3rd stringer.

What makes you think that we are better conditioned than them. Most the teams in the PAC play up tempo. Utah has been recruiting for this.

Because before Keeton cramped up, Utah State was moving the ball at will with their up tempo play. In fact the faster the Aggies went, the more effective they were. Utah was huffing and puffing. I don't think Utah wins the game without the cramps. And I don't think Utah State had been playing as fast as we have.



And I wouldn't cite Utah's playing in the PAC12 as some sort of advantage. They've been awful against conference foes. Their defense has been shredded numerous times. If they've been recruiting for this, they haven't been successful at countering that up tempo offense they face all the time in conference.



If we're like a PAC12 offense, BYU should be in good shape.

I think utah's db's are the weak spot on their D. Not saying their bad, just their weak spot. They do play 1 on 1 a lot so that exposes them(esp. against a good QB)



I liked your break down of Taysom being forced to throw/ possibly lead to turnovers. I'd add that the snap when the QB is in the shot gun has been an issue this year and in past years. I really hope our players focus on the fundamentals and not let the silly crap lead to turnovers.



We will see if Utah's d-line is over rated or not. Our YPC hasn't been that great, but with the amount of carries we have run the #'s looks good. I believe we will see a different look from Utah against us. Utah knows we will try and establish the run and will adjust to that. OSU was/is a lot stronger throwing the ball.

What I learned by watching the :utard: game:



:utard: sucks. They suck bad. There is no excuse...NO EXCUSE to lose to those :utard: bags. In fact, I expect a dominating victory.

That's what happens when you decide that the only game that matter the first half of the year is BYU. you overlook teams like OSU, who is not great. BUT, that also means they will be ready for BYU most likely. I have no doubt that utah was either thinking of the BYU game all last week (after seeing headlines for the entire week) or they were actually practicing for BYU.

When Fusi played center vs. Texas, he was dominant. He is back for the Utah game, and I would not be surprised if he starts. Considering he was just cleared to play the Monday before the Texas game, and he played as well as he did, giving him 2 weeks to get up to speed and more fit to run this O only helps more. Plus, with ou zone blocking scheme, Utah can jump around all they want, it won't matter as much.

the dreaded snap over the head. something i worry about as well. glad they had a an extra week to work fundamentals. hopefully they did a lot of that kind of stuff. taysom was very lucky the ball bounced right in his hands during the texas game. also last year we played utah we had TWO. the first on the first series that owuld have almost been the jake heaps play all over again if kreuger didn't facemasks riley, the other resulting in 7 points for them because they didn't just jump on it. at the very least I hope they are practicing jumping on the ball when that happens and not scooping it.

I was shocked to see fusi in knowing he had not even really practiced with the team. that was very encouraging. if our depth at oline improves gfgh may end up being effective against even good run stopping teams.



i think utah matches up with our offense well though. they are deep at dline. we have to find a way to exploit their linebackers. osu's tight end was open all night, that despite utah holding him like crazy.

Kwitt needed that win over OSU. He has never won a PAC 12 opener.

But, having lost to A easier PAC team, Kryle ow desperately needs a win at BYU. If he loses to BYU and most remaining PAC games, he will end up on hot seat. Bt if he beats BYU, he can claim 4-0, 9 out of last 12 vs BYU. That would keep him off hit seat one more year.

Johhny, good analysis. But you left off the use of TE. This will be Utahs trump card. He will stretch field and keep BU honest once the running game is shut down.

I do love that BYu can easily and very effectively play 5 LBs. tremendous versatility and adaptability. If we can limit Anderson as well, Wilson will be in trouble!
