utes vs BYU

No matter what you have seen out of the utes so far this season, it will not be the same team that you see in Provo on Saturday. utah is BYU's most difficult game of the year every year. I am hoping to see more focus and precision out of BYU than I have seen out of them vs the utes in the past but I don't know what to expect from them. When BYU is clearly the superior team we get Beck to Harline or 4th and 18, when utah is the equal or slightly superior we get 2008 or 2011. I am so hungry for an easy win but I can't imagine that happening.

Properly used emotion and preparation can really change a team's performance. We saw that against Texas. We need to see it again on Saturday for the cougars.



Vegas line had the OSU vs ute game as a pickem. That was a good assessment given the OT.



Line for BYU vs :utard: is 7. I really want a bigger win than that. Obviously I will be happy with anything that gives us a W, but a double digit win is my hope.

'Ole Miss dropped 44 points on Texas yesterday and racked up about 500 yards on the Texas' D... it's rather obvious that BYU did not beat the 15th ranked team in nation last weekend. Texas stinks and was shutout in the second half at home yesterday 27-0 by a team that has struggled to produce much offense the past several years. Me gets the feeling that the real BYU is the team was saw against Virginia. Make no mistake about it... the rivalry game is going to come down to which team has more success throwing the football because neither school is going to do much on the ground. BYU has a solid run D and so does Utah. So it comes down to which team has the better passing QB? While I don't consider Wilson to be all that great, he is a better thrower than Taysom. Right now I'd have to give the edge to the Utes. Why?



1. Wilson is a better passer.

2. Utah always gets up for BYU, especially when they're the underdog. BYU never seems to really 'get up' for Utah.

3. Whit will out-coach Bronco.

4. With Utah just having lost a shootout with Oregon State in OT, they're going to come in to LES with an extra chip on their shoulder.

5. Utah has more to lose with a loss than BYU does. If the Utes lose this game, they're probably staring at 8 straight losses.



Whittingham will come up with a defensive scheme that will confuse Taysom and keep him guessing knowing he cannot throw well. That, with Taysom's inability to throw the football accurately consistently, will be BYU's undoing in this game. Utes win a close one, 24-20.

I can think of several reasons why BYU refuses to lose:

1. KVN and Hoffman returned to finally beat the Utes.

2. The team is treating this game as the Superbowl.

3. TH said that he will not get another chance to play them given his tenure - wants to go out with win.

4. Bronco and Anae have had an extra week to prepare for them. BYU plays well when there is a chance to prepare.

5. MS was ranked 25 when they beat TX and they did so rich after TX lost David Ash, their DC, their RB and a bunch of injured players from BYU game. Not necessarily playing at full strength.

6. BYU defense is stronger than any team the Yewts have faced and Wilson will be pressured unmercifully. He will end up like David Ash.

7. We will win because Wolfie says we will lose.

watching the Texas game again. A couple of observations. Texas may not have a great run defense but BYU's run offense is legit. I don't care how much better the ute defense is than the Texas defense, they are not going to shut BYU's run offense completely down without committing safeties in the box and frankly I like BYU's wideouts one on one with the utes DB's. Another observation, BYU needs major improvement on pass blocking, even after all the running, Taysom had guys in his face instantly after the ball was snapped on pass plays. That simply has to improve or his passing is not going to get better. 3rd observation, Utah has not seen a defense like BYU's this year, that is the equalizer. BYU's defense is better than utah's offense and it isn't close. utah will not be able to score a bunch of points on our defense so it will be up to the offense to not give away anything cheap and wear down utah until we win. I think BYU wins this game, I will say 24-10

Virginia would disagree with you. The Cougs got 187 yards on 53 rushes... 3.5 ypc... big deal... and the Utes' run D is better than Virginia's.

You're forgetting one minor detail fried butter... Hill has to be able to get them the ball downfield... but he's not a passer, that much has been proven... Hill is 22 for 67 on the year... if my math is correct, that's a completion % of 33... that ain't gonna get the job done.

BYU's D is good... not great. Only 5 starters returned from last season. They were great last year and Utah still won and Oregon State's back-up, Cody Vaz, passed their brains out... in Provo... and racked up 42 points.



BYU's defense is better than utah's offense and it isn't close.



BYU's D is good, but they are not invincible or any iron curtain. I thought Texas' offense was just average and they still managed to rack up 445 yards.

I agree... Utah isn't going to drop 48 on BYU like they did OSU... Utes probably won't get more than about 24 max, but BYU's point production won't be any better. Should be a close game that I think Utah manages to win owing to Wilson being a better passer (who can also scramble) and BYU having little success on the ground.

I think this game comes down to a couple of things.

1. Our defense needs to avoid the big pass plays. If I was :utard: I would be tempted to play school yard ball and just throw it deep every play hoping that Andersen gets open, or for a PI call. I was shocked that Texas didn't go deep more often.

2. Our offense can't give :utard: short fields. It seems like in every game we have lost recently, our offense has basically given up points (either a touchdown, or a very short field). Avoiding turnovers is key to winning, but the point of turnover is even more important in my opinion.

Doesn't matter. Utah gets up for the game regardless.

Maybe.. I don't think it matters that Utah has a tough sched. ahead. They get up for the game regardless.

Wilson is a better passer than who? Ash? umm, no. Doesn't have better receivers either.

Ash is the best QB BYU will have faced ths far, and you saw how crap McCoy looked vs. BYU and he was able to keep Texas in the Ole Miss game for a while. PS. BYU took their foot off the gas vs. Texas after 3 quarters. Ole Miss couldn't.





Wilson is going to be having nightmares about KVN and Manu this week. And then he will live it Saturday night. They are coming for him.

This game is gonna be close!



Utah's pass defense has shown to be vulnerable. Can Taysom Hill get the ball to his receivers?

Byu's pass defense is vulnerable. Can Byu pressure Wilson and prevent Utah from exposing our DB's?



I'm not worried about Utah's RB's. Wilson scrambling will be their run game and Byu better take notice.



Byu needs to balance out their offense to have a chance to win. Utah has a good run D and Byu can't beat the Utes like they beat the longhorns.



My prediction for what this game will come down to: Special teams!!! Field poss. will be huge. Can Byu continue to make their FG's? Every point counts in this rivalry, we can't miss FG's or PAT's. DON'T let Utah get points returning kicks.

Better passer than Taysom Hill.



Ash was successful against BYU when he had time. Povey and Daniel both looked very vulnerable. If Daniel Sorenson hadn't been back in coverage it would have looked a lot worse.



Byu was able to get pressure on Ash and that was the key. IF Byu can get to Wilson like they did Ash then I like our chances otherwise we could see Wilson put up 300 yards on our green DB's.

Chuckie Keaton rann all over Utah until he cramped up. Taysom will have success running it as well, which will open passing lanes for him.



BYU's pass D has looked solid. In two games, they have given up 213 yards per game, with an average of 5.6 ypa. 20 pts per game. Got torched 1 time, and even Bama got torched Saturday. No D is perfect, but I like our chances to hold Utah under 20.
