OSU @ U - Lessons Learned

OSU defense was able to pressure Travis Wilson most of the night. Wilson was rarely able to beat the pressure with his arm. But Utah adjusted and Wilson shredded OSU with Taysom Hill imitations and very good running backs and receivers and the tight end that should be at BYU. Wilson threw 3 interceptions. Enough for OSU to win in OT despite losing their best RB to injury in the 2nd half.



Wilson is effective at running. Not as fast as TAYSOM HILL, but dangerous. OSU was as helpless and hapless as Texas at stopping him. Until they put a spy on him in OT and held U to a field goal.



Wilson is an accurate passer when he has time to throw. Better than TH has looked so far.



U has very good running backs, as usual, receivers at least as good as ours overall - but no Cody Hoffman. They have an NFL caliber tight end. OL a ? Like us.



But, if T Hill can pass accurately, they played tight man coverage and got beat several times by Manion. Hoffman would create a mismatch in 1 on 1.



Manion does not run, but is a good passer. Very effective vs U.



U run defense is much better than Texas. Ole Miss shredded that Texas defense today in Austin. U pass defense - shaky.



U does not ever quit. Just like the USU game. Big plays over and over. But also 3 picks.



BYU D is better than U or OSU. Pass defense is a ? for us, and Wilson can exploit that given time. BYU can pressure as much - likely more - than OSU did and our speedy linebackers should be able to protect the edges better than OSU did when Wilson takes off. He ran for 3 or more TDs tonight.



What else did we learn?



Expect a dog fight.

Several things impressed me last night during the game. 1. The Yewts have a dangerous offense at times. 2. Their QB Wilson can burn you - is accurate - and effective - if he has the time. 3. When pressured, or playing catch-up, I felt Wilson throws into traffic, or just throws a bad ball too often. He was lucky he only threw 3 Int's.



My impression of the Yewts this year - they are dangerous - but very beatable. I think the game this Sat. comes down to the Cougs defense keeping relentless pressure on Wilson, and our secondary not blowing any coverages. Do that, and the Cougs crush the Yewts.



P.S. Don't you think the Yewts black and red uniforms make them look like ladybugs? Just sayin' .....

Unfortunately, save for their BCS years, this describes Utah perfectly every season. They have enough top athletes to score quickly when needed, but if unmotivated they'll lay an egg. Utah is the conundrum we just cannot solve.



And the last time we all thought we'd take care of them at home we walked out 54-10 absolute losers. Our offense hasn't done enough in 4 years to make me think much has changed here. I'd say no turnovers = W.

On facebook this morning, I learned from this game how to be a better BYU fan. My two neices posted pictures of themselves and their husbands at the game wearing orange and rooting for Oregon State. They live in Utah County and are BYU fans, so must have gone to the game just to root against Utah. An idea on weekends when BYU has a bye and the Utes play at home.
