Mars⢠Taking the title: Bingham (Utah) rallied from a 17-7 halftime deficit to beat Davis 35-24 to claim the state Class 5A championship. BYU prospect Harvey Langi (6-1 208 RB) ran for 120 yards on 20 carries and scored on a 4-yard touchdown run, while 2011 BYU commits Baker Pritchard (6-2 240 TE/DE) and Manoa Pikula (6-0 205 RB/LB) had seven and three tackles, respectively. Bingham finished the season 13-1, with its only loss coming to Trinity (Texas). BYU prospect Tanner Hinds (5-10 194 RB) of Davis was held to 51 yards on 20 carries and one touchdown. His younger brother, Troy (6-3 209 So. DE), had nine tackles and a sack. Davis quarterback Gavin Fowler was 13-of-19 for 228 yards and two touchdowns.
⢠Four in a row: Timpview (Utah) defeated Springville 35-6 for the Class 4A title, the school's fourth consecutive football championship. BYU prospect Trevor Brown (6-6 210 QB) threw three touchdown passes and ran for another, but the big play was a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown by Timpview's Ofa Latu (6-2 210 LB) in the third quarter. BYU prospect Bryson McKenzie (6-0 215 RB) had 32 yards on six carries.
⢠Honored: BYU commit Zac Stout (6-2 220 LB) of Oaks Christian (Calif.) has joined teammate and fellow BYU commit Alani Fui (6-4 210 LB) as an invitee to the California Offense-Defense Bowl in January. A three-year starter at linebacker for the Lions, Stout has also been named a Private School All-American. ...Oaks Christian won its 32nd consecutive game, a 70-14 first-round playoff victory over Santa Ynez. Oaks Christian will travel to Harvard-Westlake for its next playoff game.
⢠Big rematch: For the second straight week, a Skyline (Wash.) playoff game was shortened due to the mercy rule. This week, BYU commit Jake Heaps (6-2 195 QB) threw for three touchdowns and ran for another in a 49-14 victory over Curtis. Heaps was 10-of-19 for 149 yards and Skyline led the game 49-0 at the half. In this week's semifinals, Skyline gets another shot at No. 1 Bothell. On Oct. 29, Bothell beat Skyline 25-20 for the KingCo. league championship.
⢠Powerful win: BYU commit Collin Keoshian (6-3 225 RB/LB) scored five touchdowns, including a 75-yard kickoff return for a score to open the game, as Santa Clarita Christian School (Calif.) defeated Hesperia Christian 66-21 in the second round of the 8-man football playoffs. SCCS led 34-0 after the first quarter and Keoshian finished with 227 yards rushing on just 12 carries. His other scoring runs were from 45, 10, 24 and 65 yards.
⢠Moving on: BYU prospect Joshua Quezada (6-0 198 RB) ran for 139 yards and two touchdowns as La Habra (Calif.) routed Kennedy 56-10 to open the playoffs. Next week, La Habra plays Placentia El Dorado in the next round.
⢠All the way: BYU commit Kori Gaines (5-9 175 DB) returned a punt 52 yards for a touchdown to help Grayson (Ga.) defeat Roswell 24-14 in the second round of the Class AAAAA playoffs. Grayson (12-0) takes on No. 3 Newnan (12-0) this week.
⢠End of the line: BYU commit Jordan Johnson (5-10 175 QB/DB) ran for 120 yards on 25 carries but Brooks School (Mass.) lost to Pingree 7-6 in the New England Prep Clark-Francis Bowl. Pingree scored a touchdown with 40 seconds left after recovering a fumble, one of six fumbles by Brooks School. Johnson threw a 37-yard touchdown pass on his team's first possession of the game for Brooks' only score. "It came down to the wire, but we have to pick our heads up and celebrate our season," Johnson told the North Andover Eagle-Tribune. Two years ago Brooks was 0-8. This year's 7-1 regular-season record was the school's best since the 1983 team went 7-0.
