Bronco's BEST career coaching move.

Since Bronco has been the head coach what do you think was his best move?

My choice is an easy one. GOING TO A 3-4 DEFENSE.



To realize that our recruiting strength was in the linebacker core and to go away from a successful 3-3-5 was nothing short of genius. The coaching that the LBers are getting has been great as well. The steady stream of LB's going to the NFL proves this.



Anyone think there was a more important move?

My opinion is related, but more specifically I think Bronco's best move was removing Jaime Hill and taking over the defensive schemes with personal ownership.

I thought we even saw a 2-5-4 a few times against Texas w/ KVN, Hadley, Unga, Jorgensen & Fua on the field.

That was a very good move but the 3-4 defense had to produce to make Bronco look better than Hill.

True; would we have seen a 2-5-4 if Bronco was still using the 3-3-5?? Getting more LB's on the field instead of DB's is the key to the success. Moving to a defensive system to highlight the LB's was the brilliant coaching move.

So are you saying that the coaching is more impressive than the scheme?

Since the switch from the 3-3-5 was made in Bronco's second year, before Jaime Hill became the defensive play caller (maybe even before he started coaching at BYU), it's obviously much more about the coaching and play calling. Hill only called the defense for part of one year.



If you ever get a chance to listen to Jan Jorgensen talk about some of the games that Hill called it's a great description. He says the players would just look at each other just wonder what he was doing. It sounds like Hill just had no clue how to call the defense.

Best move to date has been the restructuring of the entire coaching staff...and letting Anae have a say in who he selected as his associates. The cohesiveness of the staff:

Anae (OC and also works with OL), Mark Atuaia (running backs), Jason Beck (quarterbacks), Guy Holliday (receivers) and Garett Tujague (offensive line)

was on display from week 1 to week 2. Besides the physical play of the Offense, they also changed their mindset - imposed their will upon the opposition. For the first time, in a long time, the OL was moving the line of scrimmage and playing physical. Therefore, I believe with this change, the O/D have the same mentality - punish the opposing team. Now all the coaches are on the same page.

I believe the coaching change is still WAYYYYY to early to call. About a week ago 2J and Anae were getting reamed. Jason Beck has to show that he can develop Taysom. TH ran good last year so I'm not about to credit Coach Beck for that. Same goes for Atuaia on that point. The WR's haven't show they can catch the ball consistantly AND they only have two games under their belt with Coach Holliday.

It like calling Coach hill a genius defensive coord. after his first two games. :sick:

Here is something to chew on.. If Coach Mendenhall after firing Jaime Hill had kept the 3-3-5 would our defense be as good? Could we have kept enough quality DB's in the system to have been 3rd overall in D last year? I say no way. The switch of defenses to highlight the LB'ers has been "a" key to the success of Mendenhall's coaching.



I don't want to discount the move to fire Hill. I believe this is a case of the "horse before the cart" thing.

+1. My exact sentiments. Removing Jamie Hill opened the door to exponential defensive leaps forwards. Without the stellar defensive play since Hill's departure, BYU "W" column would have been humiliating. No bowl trips. Recruiting would have tubed. Football in Happy Valley would not be where it is today - no way.

So how would Doman be doing with THill? So good that it looks like it didnt matter that he let him go and brought back Anae? I get Jaime, but based on Oline turnaround and O production, OC has to be close second. And how would Anae have fared with Mr Nelson?

Hill had a 66% passing game under Doman last year, so there's that. The disappointing thing this year is that Hill was an average passer last year as a Freshman. Did a better job of moving safeties with his eyes as a true freshman than the previous starter did as a 5th year senior.



I think part of the issue is the speed at which BYU is playing, but it's Beck's job to get him to slow down and make the play.

I'll say firing Jamie Hill. Ever since then we have had a very good and now elite defense. We're only a few years into this change, but I really think this will have a lasting impact on the program and usher in a new era when BYU is actually known nationally for its top 10 defense.

Everyone is bagging on Jaime Hill, but I think he served an important purpose here. Our secondary, especially our corners, was pretty bad. I mean, Nate Soelberg was a starting corner. And does anyone remember how badly Brady Quinn and company torched us in 2005? Well, after 2005, we hired Jaime Hill, and we had mostly the same guys in the secondary. But he got them to play better. Justin Robinson went from being a complete liability to picking off two passes and almost getting a third against Oregon in the bowl game. We were able to limit some very pass-happy teams - such as Oregon and Oklahoma - to limited points and yards, and we did it with little guys like Justin Robinson and Brian Logan. We have to give him credit for that. He may not have been the best defensive coordinator, but he took our pass coverage to a higher level, and it seems like his successors with the secondary have kept it there.

Bronco has run a cleaner program than any of his predecessors including Lavell. .....In a world of crap (which is college football) this is what means most to me... The only thing more important is beating Utah every single year until they fall off the face of the earth.. I hope this is the year we start that streak.



In a win at all costs world, I'm most proud that Bronco can win without selling his soul to the devil. Doesn't appear that anyone else can do that these days.
