Hill is the Best Ever

Confusing the defense, cameras, fans, and at times the officials regarding one key element of the game:



WHO GOTS DA BALL?



After years of watching pocket BYU QBs seemingly stand like statues on real and fake running plays while a RB saunters over for the handoff or fake and then kind of hold the ball out there for seemingly minutes till the RB takes it or leaves it and then try to execute the run or the pass



Taysom Hill knows how to disguise where the ball is



From my row 35 seats, I saw Jimmer, his wife, Emery, and Davies on the sidelines - point being - even with that close vantage point, I often found myself following a runner being followed by and tackled by defenders only to realize Hill had pulled the ball back and was throwing it or running down field with it.



If he learns to throw



This is going to be explosive and unstoppable.



So, I know what I hope they are working on this week.



Hill is the best I have seen at BYU of disguising where the ball went.

So far the discussions have been on how great a runner and how poor a passer Hill is. Thanks for posting this, it's a big factor in qb skills.

And of course, reading the D is as critical as disguising. But yes, he's GOT that. Tricked me a few times as well.

Definitely got me as well. I can't remember if it was ESPN announcers or SportsCenter or what, but there was definitely quite the talk after the game about this very thing. The national announcer said something to the effect that Taysom might be the best in the country at deception concerning where the ball is.

I noticed in the longest td run that the running back (couldn't see who) took several tacklers with him while Hill rips through the remaining Texas defense. Fakes like that are worth as much as good blocks which there were plenty of as well.

I loved the first run that Hill ripped off for a first down using his ball deception skills. I remember Williams getting hit for a loss and thinking "here we go again, just like UVA". Then Hill goes sprinting around the end of the line for a big gain. Glad we decided to do it until UT could stop it.

Good post Bib. I got some comments at work from local Texas folks who watched the game, and they were also talking about how slick Hill was with his ball handling (this was also their first time to ever see him play, or even hear about him). If he can become even an average passer, this offense will be beyond explosive.

Fooled me bunches of times and clearly fooled the camera man as well. Can only imagine what it was like being a Texas player without a bird's eye view. Very handy skill.

I just can't believe the ref's missed the chance to call a penalty on him for "attempt to deceive".

I remember that - sort of - ridiculous call - remind us what game that was and the specific circumstances.

BYU vs. Air Force, Max Hall went away from center as if calling an audible, while doing so, the ball was hiked to Unga, who scored a touchdown. a 15 yard penalty was called, and in the end, Hall was intercepted.

I still remember that and at the time of the touchdown, thought it was the greatest drawn up play I had ever seen. I still think that was the most bogus call by officials.
