Perspective for Cougar Nation

In the weekly coaches show Bronco stated some pretty powerful words I think cougar nation needs to hear and take into consideration.. paraphrased

1st year in a new offense

1st year with a new OC, OL coach, RB coach, WR coach

1st game of the season

He also mentioned the front loaded schedule.

I hope cougar nation can be patient this year as growing pains are inevitable.

I think cougar fans can be patient...but I think the counterpoint would be that the past three years of offensive futility has already taxed the patience.

I am certain the passage of time is making me think more optimistically about the offense...but make no mistake, I am not sure I have seen a better example of offensive futility than we saw last week.

Looked like the same offense, just faster. Not to mention that Anae isn't necessarily a new OC.

I believe it's a valid point you bring up. I feel the same way.

In college football with all the graduating and new recruits it's tough. I don't believe BYU is the type of school that "reloads". I think we rebuild. Easy schedules of the past has made the rebuilding easier to swallow. This year we have lots of new "things" and a hard scheduale right from the get go. Other years we could win 10 games with this team ( lose two to the big dogs) and win all the patty cakes.

Maybe Bronco should try emphasizing those points prior to a season, rather than waiting until after the first loss that should have been a relatively easy W. Instead, he chose to emphasize points like "special season," the schedule provides a "great opportunity," and "national championship schedule."

He had a chance to manage expectations from January through August 30th, but he didn't really care to do it back then...

And those certainly weren't his words just a week prior art the big blue bash either.

Add to it all that Anae was saying this offense was going to be like nothing we had seen and they end up looking a little silly.

The problem is that if BYU loses to Utah this year, there are going to be a lot of people who are very, very frustrated. Those excuses are going to look pretty poor about the 4th week of the season.

Unfortunately Bronco has a history of not knowing how to manage expectations, until the first loss and then saying stuff like this. I would say it's getting old, but we passed that about 4 years ago. It's been really old for a while.

I don't see it changing either. :skeptic:

And BYU fans are notorious for buying all the hype. It goes both ways.

In public, Bronco has an unflagging optimism every off season. I think that is a good thing. Most of us here also go into the season hoping for the best. When adversity hits, like last week, Bronco's public response is the same as always, including explanations/excuses and a positive spin going forward. In fact, I cannot recall a single time when Bronco has publicly characterized the perfomance of his team or his staff as "unacceptable," "terrible," or the like. That includes staff that he fired just days later.

So here's my question: is his demeanor the same with the team? Or does he yell and call out specific players for substandard production? I don't have an in with any current or former players under Bronco, so I honestly don't know. If he is the same in public and with the team, that would earn my respect for Bronco the man, becuase I don't have that kind of self-control. But even if the effort last Saturday was excellent, the results were not, and I think I would want Bronco the coach to let the team know in no uncertain terms that it was not good enough.

Back when Quinn Gooch used to still own Deep Shades of Blue (website) he used to make comments that the defense used to envy the offense because they didn't have to deal with Bronco after sub par performances in meetings and practice. Bronco will never criticize or call out his team publicly but they know it in practice.

This. But, recall when he called out the entire WR group? Was that two seasons ago? Took him like six games to lay down the law. Maybe it was last year. Same thing with RN. It took until the GT game for Bronco to call him out as admitted in the post game comments -- and only after TH said " enough!"-- and gee willickers if it wasn't RNs best game mentally and physically.

What scares me is that Anae built into his contract/agreement even more autonomy than before. I trust Anae to be very tough -- bc in team mtgs he's notorious for being brutal. But not sure I "TRUST" him regarding his play calling or over-- thinking / analysis paralysis in scheming. I told you folks this "TRUST ME" message during camp portended bad times ahead.

ITS ONLY ONE GAME, TRUE that. But it sure seems there are alot of ominous looking clouds in the BYU skyline. Anae is stubborn enough to drive GFGH all the way to 0-3-- and maybe all the way to San Jose ;-) err, idaho State. And Bronco just asked for the fans patience? Oh my. This could get ugly. Might want to head for the storm cellar now. If THill shows again that he cant Go as Fast or as Hard, that his speed has diminished by a step (thanks for that legacy Doman) and if his passing is as suspect ( assuming WR even pull their heads out), expect ALOT more "have patience", fan backlash, and Broncos happy days to expire quickly.

I hope Some of us are wrong. I hope we eat crow. But, if I were a betting man, I don't trust Anae to adjust and precedent has shown that Bronco isn't likely to either. Again, sorry to be a downer.

GO COUGS! Give the Horns all you've got!

Week before the Virginia game RA mentioned that the development of the offense was like a "marathon" 2J and Anae mentioned that the O-line was going to make mistakes, they just wanted to see them "go hard and fast".

I can't remember hearing any coach say that the offense was going to be good, great, sharp etc. the first game.

I place zero blame on the coaches. The amount of media coverage and general pre season buzz make it really hard for any fan to temper their expectations. Coaches become broken records of go fast go hard, like the effort blah blah. They never promise results, that's a death wish.

Yep. Which is why the fanbase, at least those I interact with, don't trust what the coaching staff says anymore. I haven't bought into the hype since 2009. Each year I believe less and less, until this year I didn't believe anything the coaches said. Unfortunately they still keep saying it.

I don't trust this coaching staff at all anymore. Defensively Bronco is brilliant. Offensively and as an HC, I don't believe. At all.

Just one example: http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865585431/BYU-football-Robert-Anae-and-his-offense-have-evolved-since-first-stint-at-BYU.html?pg=all" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The sad thing is that the OLine on Saturday was worse than any game last year. We have evolved but I think it is the wrong way. :skeptic:

That article is a perfect example of what i mentioned in my post above. I didn't see any quotes to suggest that we were going to be good by Virginia. Here is Anae at the end of the article: " You’ve still got to block. You’ve still got to run, you’ve still got to secure the ball, you’ve got to throw and you’ve got to catch. There’s no amount of adjustments that can make up for that.”

Also "“We’re (a) young (team),” Anae explained."

IMHO I think all these quotes were to soften the blow when cougar nation saw the amount of work still needed for GFGH.

Also Bronco didn't make the comment as an excuse. It was in response to a question on his assessment of the Virginia game.

After all the things he said he thought the teams effort was good. ( not exact quote )

My reason for this thread was for fans to get perspective, not to list excuses.

Four years isn't enough?

I'm sorry, I have little sympathy. Time to see some results.
