Rank Order the Offensive Problems

I know its time to move on to Texas, but thought I'd add one more post-mortem to UVA loss.

So, in order of problem groupings, worst is first, let me know thoughts.

1. OL--easiest target. Biggest improvement needed.

2. WRs/TEs way too many drops, especially at critical times. And the INT--ugh.

3. Play calling. Way too predictable. I think RA thought BYU could beat UVA with short book. Then he opened that diamond/triple option formation and had a little more success. But too late.

4. THill. Gotta give that guy some time. Fourth seems like I'm holding him guiltless, but I think he gets way more efficient with the above happening. But with UT Dline, not going OT happen this week. Sadly.

5. Cody Hoffman. Hard to blame him. But his absence spoke volumes!!

6. RBs have to throw JW up there but not for his running. Otherwise can't fault his effort or results.

Did I miss a category/group/variable?

2. QB Accuracy

The rest are things that will improve once 1 and 2 do.

Accuracy is #1 in my mind. THill must be more accurate and efficient. If he plays better, and controls what he can control, BYU will be ok. If he waits for the OL too improve or the WRs to catch better, then he and BYU will continue to be played by poor and inefficient QB play. He has to play better. He's the single most important player on the field. He has to play better plug-in and simple.

#1 (tied) OL

#1 (tied) QB

#3 WR

No other real problems.

I put QB tied with OL because there were 2 major problems with Hill, accuracy and reads. Both were bad. Combined as bad as the OL play, in my opinion. There were plays there to be made, throws to be made to open receivers in the amount of time the QB had, they just weren't seen or weren't made.

I hope it was just first game, high humidity, jitters.

This. Blame 2J and Beck? Not yet.

Also, the WRs missed Hoffman. They also appeared to miss Cahoon.

The TEs barely played. Anae's fault or their fault?

Our best player was part of the INT, a RB, not the WRs. But what happened to his back-ups? Lack of talent or lack of opportunity? What is Atuaia bringing to the table?

Play-calling was bad (Anae). Game management was bad (Bronco/Anae). Penalties were bad (Bronco/Anae). Slow punting was bad (Arellano). Starter designations were bad (Anae/2J- Vaitai for example). But the OL and the QB were both really, REALLY bad. So was the weather, and the natural flow/pacing of the game. So let's see what happens from Week 1 to Week 2.

I agree on the coaches fault--especially on the block. That punt gets blocked even if not bobbled. Scott almost got tackled. It wasn't even close to being a tip, or block. Iirc, the D alignment was the same on both punts. Total overload on the right side of the O line--two plays in a row. Should have called TO. It was another far from being blocked the first time with the penalty.

In addition to (not supplanting) those above,

7) Lack of "Likening". As in, Hill looking at bad snaps near own goal line in early games that cost the previous two QBs their jobs and not thinking, "what would I do in that situation?" and FALLING ON THE BLINKIN BALL! instead of trying to scoop it up and be a hero. If he does that, if he learns that easy, obvious lesson, then we punt out of that series rather than giving up 2 points. If we don't give up that safety, then we go for (and likely make) the PAT after then next TD drive, rather than missing on a horribly executed 2-point conversion attempt. That right there is a 3 point swing. That right there gets us into OT, and I like our chances in OT against UVA. As Wrubell just tweeted, BYU's 8 three-and-out defensive stops were the most in Bronco history. And yes, their kicker did hit a pitifully defended 53-yard field goal, but before that his career long was 30!

8.) Special teams coaching. Not just the fact that our punting formation got absolutely blown up when the 3-man swinging gate was actually challenged for the first game ever, but also the total lack of effort to put a hand up on either FG attempt and half-hearted (if that) effort to get at their punter even though he punted a bazillion times! Even if the odds are low of blocking a kick on any given down, the odds are high that you'll block one with good scheme and effort if there are enough trials/attempts. UVA figured this out.

9) Hadley and Sorensen catching INTs that literally slip through their fingers. Good play by both of them otherwise, but as we saw, turnovers lead to huge momentum swings which often lead to points. Especially in the first game of the season when both teams and their fans are trying to figure out their identity.

In the end, plenty of blame to go around. Corners played nicely, though...with a 10-15 yard cushion. So there's that.

Nice post. The 53 yarder, it really looked like they were playing for the fake--or so it seemed to me. And yes, very little pressure on punts. KVN and the other guy seemed always to play for the fake punt. Conservative special teams.

I think the whole game plan was conservative and not showing very many cards for UT and UT.

#1 Offensive coordinator (I'm telling you, he is the wrong guy for the job if we expect to win average teams regularly)

#2 Offensive gameplan / bad gameplan with our personnel (too gimmicky and no substance)

#3 Lack of adjustment from wrong offensive gameplan

#4 Offensive line

#5 WR dropping balls

#6 Quarterback missed reads and throw accuracy
M
mormonrasta
1. Overall QB play- decision making on the read option was poor. Throwing was poor.

2. OL- blocking was bad. Penalties killled us.

3. WR- Drops

4. TEs- If you're going to be nonexistent in the passing game learn how to block.

"Beat average teams"? Or maybe "win games against average teams"?

"Let's eat Grandma!" I yelled. She took a bite of her food. Then we ate her.

I sure hope they weren't playing for the fake on that 53 yarder. It happened as time expired in the 1st half.

And I hate that Anae was sandbagging. I really, REALLY expected better of him. That attitude probably rubbed off on the players. Reminds me of Crowton showing up at Reno the day of the game. Not such a bad idea logistically, but definitely sends the wrong message to everyone.

My 5th grader has a sign in his new classroom with that on it. Underneath it says "Don't be a psycho. Use punctuation."

Just an aside, but the flying into Reno on gameday was a bigger issue than over-confidence by Crowton. It was poor planning by the athletic department. That week, there was a huge convention in Reno, and there were literally no hotel rooms available in the area because they weren't booked far enough in advance. The only real options were to stay in Sacramento and drive 3 hours to the game that morning, or take the 90 minute flight from Provo.

Thanks, Stuck. I hadn't heard that before. That makes it a bit more palatable.
