Spiff's Statistical Observations & Other Nonsense

As you can imagine, most of the stats this weekend we're very encouraging for the Offense.



RER:

82.93 for the WRs

61.33 for the TEs

52.50 for the RBs



The passing game needs a TON of help.



- The 187 yards rushing were the 2nd most against a BCS team under Bronco. Only better outing was the 285 vs Oregon St in 2012.



- The 23 3rd down attempts were the most under Bronco.



- The 175 passing yards were a season opening low for Bronco by 50 yards.



- The 7 Three & outs were the most since 7 vs Texas in 2011.



- BYU's defense forced 8 Three & outs for the second consecutive game (SDSU had 8).



- The team with the better PER has now won 22 of the last 23 BYU games (including 14 straight).



- Bronco is now 42-5 in games when rushing for 150 or more yards.



- THill's 32.5% completion rate is the fourth worst of any QB since 1982 of any QB who threw at least 10 passes in a game. Those worse: Feterik vs Arizona St in 1998 (in a win ironically enough), Detmer vs Penn St in 1991 and Bob Jensen vs San Diego St in 1986.



- It was the worst 3rd start of any BYU QB since 1982 by a more than 20 PER points (2nd worst was John Walsh vs UCLA in 1992 (92.86).



- It was the 4th worst start of any SO QB, only beat out Berry vs Boise in 2003, Engemann vs UNLV & Florida St in 2000.



- The defense has held opponents to under 40% on 3rd down in 14 of the last 16 games.



- It's been nine games since an opponent converted more than one 3rd & 7 or longer. And 13 games since an opponent converted more than two.

Ronney Jenkins was awesome in that 1998 win against Arizona State. 171 yards. That's why we won, along with our awesome defense.



Feterik did make plays when needed. He had roughly the same number of passing yards as Hill had vs. Virginia, but they came on only half as many completions, IIRC.

Spiff, what about the number of punts? If I recall correctly we punted 12 times. That has to be up there in the books.

9 punts from Arellano, 1 from Taysom. 1 blocked.



Also, I'm surprised no one is talking about Taysom's punt---35 yards is pretty solid...only 5 yards shy of our 40 yard average.

I like the rugby punt. I hope we do it this season.



Also, I saw a tweet from Wrubell that said that the defense only allowed 3 yards per play and that was the lowest total ever from a Bronco led squad against a BCS team.



The defense did its job. The offense sucked on ice.
