Polynesians

This is a question for anybody who can shed some light on the Poly situation at BYU.

Via was pretty effusive in his praise for KWhitt and the U on the radio the other day. In the past, he has been very outspoken on his criticism of Bronco and how he has dealt with Polys, particularly when it comes to staffing. However, in his comments on the radio, Via seemed to be implying that BYU isn't in touch with the Poly culture the way that KWhitt and the U are. This summer, BYU outs out a special to highlight their Polynesian pipeline of the past so that they can re-kindle it for the future. It's as if they recognize they need more help in recruiting these kids.

So my question, are Vai and possibly other Polynesians intentionally steering Poly recruits to Utah and away from BYU? Via sure made it sound to me he was relieved Pita ended up at the U after initially verbaling to the Y. Does anybody know more about this? Any Polynesians out there that care to share their experience?

I realize this may open a can of worms that shouldn't be, so I hope the comments don't become mean.

I hope it doesn't sound too mean to say that I don't care about Vai any more. He has apparently made friends with Utes and likes them more now than he cares about loyalty to his Alma Mater.

Vai is the Al Sharpton/Jesse Jackson of the Poly community. He looks for slight and mistreatment anywhere he can imagine them. If you don't give the Polys special treatment, in Vai's book you're anti-Poly.

The pipeline will always be the, especially because of the church. What has happened is that there are far more ploys being recruited today than in the past. BYU can't offer all of them. And outside of Utah many see The U as a second church school. And so it can be an option if they don't get an offer from the Y or if there seems to be a pressing need at their position. I don't know what Vai said but the Y is just fine with the pipeline. With Marky and Anae there is some serious link to the poly community. And Kaufusi too. Anae's name alone carries more weight than most others combined. His dad Famika is a legend to the poly community because of all he did to bring it to the attention of the sports world. So I wouldn't worry about the pipeline. Some will go to the Y, some to the U, and then some will want to try out those glamor schools around but after all is said and done, BYU will get the majority of the ones they recruit hard. After all is said and done the church still trumps in the minds of most them.

Thanks, Kahuku for that perspective. I think what you said is true. Some of those kids cannot qualify for BYU, like Star. Some of them may prefer to avoid BYU's Honor Code. Some may have skills that are already stacked for at BYU, and therefore more marketable to another program. And after all, we did win Harvey and Manase away from the school up North. So it works both ways.

I'm not interested in the opinion of someone who thinks that race should be considered over skill and experience when it comes to a job.

I'm with Schmoe on this.

Vai has been in Philly too long where the entitlement culture is alive and well.

We have 4 Polynesians starting on Defense. Fua, Manimaluna (sp?), Unga & Kafusi. That is more than 1 third of the D. Bronco is the D-coordinator so that should say something.

There are also few more Polynesians on the 2 deep on offense....

Vai was a solid player, but an even better arrogant victim.

Lots of good thought already.

Utah has the advantage of being a "church" school without the strict standards.. So you please your family by going to a "church" type school, but the athlete doesn't have the strict rules. I believe this was why Manti Teo went to ND..

It all works out anyways. Byu wants kids that can commit 100% to the honor code. Some kids might be 90% committed ( want a beard and an iced coffee !)

A "church school"??????? Aside from the absurdity of such a suggestion, I suppose one could argue that they do try to convert everyone to liberalism.

Did you read imakakauku's post? Utah is viewed as a church school etc etc...

Also if you live in Hawaii coming to a school in Utah, with an LDS coach and players and an Institute of Religion...

A church school without the church rules. At least as close as you can get in D-1 without going to Byu.
