Reality with Bronco as head coach

I'm just curious to hear what others think about Bronco and his head coaching abilities? During his tenure in the dumpy MWC, Bronco went 56-21. I think we can all agree that there were 6 absolute dogs in the MWC every year and then there was that division I-A school that BYU played as well. Thus, Bronco and the Cougs were literally assured 7 wins every season. In 6 seasons, that would have meant 42 guaranteed wins. You take those guaranteed wins away and Bronco's real record is 14-21. He's also mismanaged the QB spot horrendously going back to the Heaps/Nelson era and spends little time involved in the offensive scheme of things owing to his focus on the D.

Football is 5th on his list of priorities, he stands on the sideline most of the time looking like LaVell Edwards in his last few seasons as HC (arms folded, motion-less, emotion-less with blank stares as though a casual fan or bystander) and his recent gaffes and silly ideas (e.g. - wanting to put the words pride, honor and tradition on the back of 33% of the team's unis) was ridiculous. He also insisted on playing Riley Nelson last year when it was obvious he wasn't the best QB on the bench and while the kid had a fractured vertebra. Is this the guy going forward into the future for BYU football? Surely, BYU can do better... or can they? Oh, and hey Bronco... it's OK to get upset at a player for something boneheaded they've done... it's OK to yell and get fired up... the general authorities won't ex-communicate you for that.

He looks good riding a motorcycle, and his wife "lets" him.

So, yeah, I pretty much hate him.

He does what he was hired to do:

- run a clean program

- run a football in accordance with BYU principles

- win football games

Spiff, you and I could have gone 56-21 in his first 6 seasons playing the schedule he did. Yes, he does run a clean program which is a huge positive, however, I think you will agree that fans, boosters and Cougar Club members would rather see performance, execution and wins on the field before squeaky-clean players' lives off the field. Has Bronco had a losing season yet? No, however, he is 7 games under .500 vs. quality opponents, that is a fact and proven in his record over the years. Perhaps the most frustrating and maddening aspect of seeing Bronco on the sidelines is when a player is responsible for a false start, multiple false starts, unsportsmanlike penalties, etc. and then watching Bronco say and do nothing about it. Ever see KWhit after his players screw up mentally? He gets in their grills and tries to make sure it doesn't happen again. Granted, Bronco is a good coach owing to running a rather clean program with no off the field problems and his 'Bishop, spiritual-advisor' role, however, when it comes to X's and O's and pure coaching ability, there is a lot to be desired there. One big turnoff for me is his pompous, arrogant attitude towards the fans and media whenever there is a suggestion that he may not be making sound judgments/decisions about an issue. And one thing is certain... Kyle Whittingham will always coach circles around him, which is why the Utes are going to beat his Cougs for the 4th year in a row.

So Wolfman already claims to not be a :utard: which leaves us to about 4 other choices for his fandom based on his level of distaste for BYU:

Wyoming?

Utah State?

San Diego State?

Or maybe a Hawaii fan on a really bad day.

Which is it Wolfman and what's your coaches record?

Wow, Just had a paradigm shift because of this post. None of these issues have been brought up or discussed before. Real powerful, useful info.

A&W- Surprised BYU hasn't offered you that HC position.

Not going to speak for Spiff here, but I'll stop cheering for BYU the day they put more priority on winning than having a "squeaky-clean image". While you're at it, define squeaky clean for us.

Also, are you proposing that when Bronco allows his players to not be "squeaky clean" that wins will somehow become easier to come by?

Please define "quality opponents"

Bronco is 3-1 (.750) against teams that were .500

Bronco is 6-4 (.600) against teams that were .501-.599

Bronco is 14-4 (.778) against teams that were .600-.699

Bronco is 2-6 (.250) against teams that were .700-.799

Bronco is 3-4 (.429) against teams that were .800-.899

Bronco is 0-6 (.000) against teams that were .900-1.000

Bronco is 20-10 (.667) against teams that were ..501-.749

I think Bronco more than holds his own against "quality" opponents. Maybe not against elite, but I think winning 42.9% of the time against teams that win between 80 & 89% of their games isn't too shabby.

I'm pretty sure that is not certain. And I wouldn't call an OT loss, two blocked FGs to lose as having been coached around in circles. The ONLY games I will concede Bronco got flat-out out coached were 2008 and 2011 (when he let his team quit). Every other game has been hotly contested. Even in the games where BYU should have won by more, Bronco made the right adjustments to get his team back in the game and in position to win.

If you or Spiff could have gone 56-21 as a football coach against BYU's opponents you're both missing out on a minimum of a million dollar a year salary. There are probably at least 50 or 60 teams that would love to jump at having a coach of that caliber.

Bronco is the right man for the job and he has overall done an excellent job. riley nelson is his biggest mistake in my opinion and it was a huge mistake. but overall i am glad he is our coach and have been impressed with how he has coached and the program he runs.

He needs to beat Utah this year and he knows it and I think he will.

I've turned down numerous offers. But when they wanted me to stop posting on CougarCorner - it was a deal breaker.

And to be fair to Wolfie, he said he AND I could have gone 56-21. I kept waiting for him by the soda machine w/ a hot dog on top of it so we could start our coaching careers together - but he never showed.

He's not a :utard: , I heard through the grapevine that he dreamed of going to Ricks and is still bitter about the combined indignity of them ending the sports programs and the subsequent rejection of his application to BYU and BYU Idaho. In desperation, he applied to :utard: and they rejected him because his English comprehension was too low. That's what I heard anyway. ;) ;)

Save the patronizing for when the Cougs start 1-2 and aren't playing for anything after week 3. They'll likely beat Virginia, but if not, an 0-3 start to the season will be lurking and then you can pin it all on me.

It has been a while since I posted on here due to these types of posting getting really personal and some posters crossing lines. Hopefully this one doesn't.

Bronco is a GREAT DC. I want to keep him as HC solely on his abilities as a DC. But he drives me nuts in so many other ways, such as the name on jerseys debacle, apparent lack of energy, emotion and passion, not quite involved enough on offense, distaste for fans, Riley Nelson, inability to develop most top recruits, handling of Doman and the OC position, etc.

Bottom line for me is this. As of right now, I don't think we could do much better. I also think with a few minor tweaks, HE could be a LOT better! I just hope Bronco will get out of the funk of the past 3 or 4 years and start improving on his weaknesses. I really do believe he has done an okay job and he has kept the program clean (too much focus on it, especially to the public, but at least it is clean). But I feel he has so much more potential if he could get over himself a little. What he did to Van Noy, he needs someone to do to him every once and a while!

If BYU wants it fans to pay these new high prices for tickets and apparel, we need to bring some excitement and scoring back to BYU football!

He hates Bronco because he is employed by BYU and has successfully meeted BYU doctrines and wordly football. He hates BYU because they are run by the LDS church. He hates the LDS church because they do not recognize his authority as a new prophet and head of the church. He's just a typical apostate, self-aggrandizing, self-proclaimed prophet.

No, someone who joins a BYU fan board, proclaims they don't like BYU, spends hours on it over a 2 day period, and makes a bunch of provacative statements makes them a Utah fan at best. It'd be more embarassing for that person if they weren't even a Utah fan. I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt.

I'll stick with what I said and the facts Spiff... Bronco had 7 automatic wins each year from 2005 to 2010 owing to the fact that he was coaching in the dumpy MWC and playing 6 stiffs and a D I-AA school every year. Now that he's out of the MWC and coaching as an independent, you're going to see a minimum of 3-4 losses every year and insignifcance in terms of the bowl picture and national relevance.
