Kanuch (NT) goes down for the season. Leavitt (the new green corner) tweaks his hip flexor and won't practice for 7 days. Some kid named Eric Thornton (WR) will be switching to DB 2 weeks into fall camp to provide "depth." He's never played the position in his life.

Seriously though, it is best to be careful with Leavitt. No sense making injuries worse before the games counting.

Is Bronco capable of designing a scheme that hides both CB spots? Perhaps our prayers should now focus on convincing head coaches to only try to run on our D...

Eric Thornton isn't "some kid". He had been lining up in the slot opposite Falslev, mostly with the first team offense. Here is what Coach Howell said about him:

Is losing JJ and Kanuch a good thing? No. Is Leavitt's injury happy news? Of course not. But BYU's defense will be more than fine. The coaches are on top of this and know way more about their team and roster than all of us combined.



And remember, it was Manumaleuna's injury last year that provided the opportunity for Ziggy Ansah.

I thought Bronco said he liked the way things went w/o pads last year and he would do it again this year and every year after.

I'm all for the hidden diamond showing up and creating a cool story, but that is very much the exception. Are you truly at peace with the idea of a WR turned DB in the middle of fall camp not being a pretty major liability? It may not be the end of the world, but what happens when he goes down?

Word is that Lee and Hague may be back by the first game (possibly--or soon thereafter). They are being extra careful with Leavitt's hip. After all, it is training camp. No, it is not ideal since Johnson and Trammell are both gone for the year, but I'm not ready to sink into despair yet.

Hague suffered an IT (knee) band injury and has been thus far held out of live action in camp.



PoVey continues to recover from 2012's foot-injury issues and and has been off-and-on in camp.



Lee injured his back before camp began, and is expected out until up to the third game of the 2013 season.



Leavitt showed well in the first week of camp, only to strain his hip flexor early this week; he's supposed to be back by early next week.



After the injury to Trammell, coaches brought in late signee and JC transfer Rob Daniel, and as of today, he's an opening-game starter at field corner. Following the Johnson injury, WR Eric Thornton was moved over to corner, and he is quickly learning the defensive ropes in an effort to contribute.

Whats laughable to me is how we all think its the end of the world.



Some have made there minds up on how things are going to work out.

We could very well be really bad in the secondary BUT lets wait and see.

Bronco has dealt with a lack of talent at CB for 90% of his time at Byu. We've schemed for it and have still done fairly well.



None of us has seen Rob Daniel play one D1 game, same goes for Leavitt.

Could be a blessing in disguise ala Ethan and Ziggy

Why would God be a BYU fan? I believe all of the members of the First Presidency and most of the Q of the 12 graduated from the U. And if you think fall camp has been laughable because of all the players going down to injury, wait until the season begins. They bring back Anae after firing him a few years ago and now he's going to implement a new pro-style offense where they're running a play every 12 seconds??? :lol: That might work with USC or Oregon players, but not with BYU and to make it worse, they're going to try it with a QB with only 2 games under his belt. :bug: Players have been dropping like flies, the D only brings back half their strength, Alisa is hurt, Olsen is outplaying Hill in scrimmages... with the Cougs facing their toughest schedule in school history, they'll be lucky to get to 6 wins this year!

Welcome back Wolfie. As you know - The Bibster is a realist. BYU could win 6 games or less as you stated. Most likely, BYU will be bowl eligible. Utah absolutely will not be. USU may or may not be. WSU, Dixie, SUU and any others do not matter. That is the state of 2013 football in the state of Utah.

Hey Bibbie. I agree... Utah will not be bowl eligible this year... not even close (Utes will win 4 games). Utah has no business being in the PAC12 like BYU has no business being independent. The Utes simply cannot recruit the same caliber of players as most of the other schools in the conference, plain and simple. Likewise, BYU does not have the caliber of players to compete independently against schools like Texas, Notre Dame, Boise State, Wisconsin, etc. year in and year out - as soon as the Cougs get that early season loss, what are they playing for? The Poinsettia? The Cougs will hit two losses before the end of September and that will mean the rest of the season is meaningless (again) with the only thing left to play for being elgibility for a lower tier bowl. With both the Utes and Cougs no longer in the dumpy MWC with 5-6 automatic wins each year, that means fewer wins every season and a 'who cares' bowl for December (assuming they get bowl eligible). I call that realism. If BYU ends up bowl eligible this year, it will only be because they went 6-6 (that is best case). Best case for Utah is 5-7.

I'm not seeing many end of the world posts. My OP was meant to convey that the state of affairs is laughable. Our guys are dropping like flies, but hey I still think we'll have a great year. But when you read of a new injury to starter or 2nd stringer who is now a starter it does in fact become comical.

It's hanging. 5-7 is a possibility... but I don't see them having a losing season, even with their most difficult schedule ever. They'll barely make it to a bowl at 6-6.

The Utes are being ravaged by injury as well if you look at their forums.



The injury bug bites every team every year--we're just unfortunate that our most vulnerable position on the depth chart has taken more hits than we'd like.

Seven wins is a realistic prediction. If our defense somehow didn't have much of a drop off, which I was comfortable saying until the cb and nt injuries, then I think 8 to 10 was a real possibility even with the difficult schedule.



last year with a ridiculously crappy offense we were close to winning every single game. this years offense may have had us undefeated last year. that is why there is reason for optimism even with the very tragic situation at cb.
