Scrimmage 10 Aug

Wow. I'm kind of surprised no one has started a thread on the scrimmage.

Maybe that is indicative of nothing very spectacular, except maybe the kicking.



I enjoyed being in the stadium. Great day.



Kicking game probably the highlight. I think I only say one kick missed the whole life action attempts. Two 52 yarders, one each by Sorenson and Samson. Multiple placements on each hash.

Nice 80 yard drive by THill.

ALOT of starters not playing at all or much.



Poor Jason Munns got one pass to throw and it got picked and he got sacked--so much for the green jersey.



Noticed Kaufusi on the edge to block on field goals. That sends a statement!



Other thoughts or observations?

Use of zone read - option to run or pass based upon how defense reacts. Similar to what TX did to us with David Ash.

They're probably all still out to lunch. Once you get a JCW's burger in you, it's hard to move at too quick a pace.

Fun to be in LES. Living on the East Coast I never get to attend home games (but looking forward to being in Charlottesville on Aug 31), so was glad to be in Provo at the right time.



To be honest, Olson looked like a much better QB. Taysom seemed off on any throw longer than 10 yards. Ammon had a great TD toss to mathews and a nice bullet on 3rd and long to Ross for about 15 yards to the far hash. Read option worked well, though. And the loudest cheer of the day was when Taysom slid instead of getting tackled. Which is good in that it showed Hill that there is broad fan support for him preserving himself. And Taysom has massive arms--double Ty Detmers (which, if we're honest, isn't saying much, right?)



Williams did well. Surprisingly good performances by Hine and Lasike. Hine had a tackle for a big loss early on, but did a nice job of gaining tough yardage later on. Lasike impressed most of the day, with a couple of bruising 5-10 yard runs.



2, maybe 3 false starts called on the O-line, which is dissappointing. Overall, the protection was decent. RBs did a nice job of blocking.



Lots of scrubs got some playing time today--some did well, some fell flat.



On kicking, Sorensen did well overall, including a 50 yard make, but did miss a 38 yarder. Can't recall if he attempted any PATs. Bingham did, though, and looked pretty good throughout.



I was impressed by the speed of the play calling. Longest delay after the ball was set that I saw was 15 seconds. Many were half that. Mostly clean play, too, except for the false start and holding calls against the O-Line.



After practice i headed to Legacy Hall with my oldest boy. First time there. Pretty impressive. Didn't see the crystal football, though. That was the only disappointment. Saw several players coming in and out getting food, including Friel. Made me realize that the TEs were very unmemorable. I can't recall if a single play went to them.



Also saw Robert Anae. Greeted him and told him I'd read his dissertation yesterday (had to go to the HBLL special collections to find it and pull the "I'm a researcher at the World Bank" card). He paused and said "Oh No. Really?" And laughed shaking his head as he went past.

Oh, and Friel has dreamy hair.

Someone should remind Friel that Riley Nelson graduated..... Friels hair should do the same.... Well either that or a mock Herbal Essence commercial
