Does lack of media access for Fall Camp hurt enthusiasm?

Heard this question is to be debated on radio this morning.



What do you think? Does the lack of coverage, stats, progress, hurt when it comes to building fan enthusiasm?



If yes, is it worth the upside for Bronco of having fewer distractions and keeping game plans secret or whatever else are his motives?



Regardless, he's the boss. He gets to decide.

I think it hurts enthusiasm amongst the most hardcore fans, the ones who are following everything they can. But how much does it hurt it? Not enough to turn them off from watching once the season starts. And the casual fan, who makes up the majority of any fan base? Well they don't really tune in until season starts anyways.



So does it hurt? Yes, but in a way that causes very little actual harm to the program.

So, Bronco has it out for CC? ;)

I'll have to agree with Hawkwing on this one. I said "yes", but it's a qualified "yes". It might have an effect on enthusiasm right now, but it won't make any difference once the season starts. And if it helps keep the distractions down, great.

No way it hurts. Every year more and more reporters show up to camps and take what little info there is and generate hype.

With blogs, fan pages, KSL, Des. news etc. There is a never ended supply of re-hashed news from now till kickoff.



The hardcore fans know its re-hashed, but were hard core(we don't need the hype).



All I need to know is the date and time of kick off and I'm hyped.

Typically, if people want to see something, interest increases until they actually can see it. So, in essence, if they closed practices for the entire fall camp, interest would build until the first game. However, this approach could backfire if they team went out and played poorly at their first game. Since they are not closing practices for the entire camp, preseason interest will be dependent on the team looking good in the open practices.

Ok. Stupid question. It was a slow day. That's what I get for paying any attention to sports talk radio, and in particular the 2nd most annoying radio personality in the slc market.

I remember this being a bigger issue when Utah had all of their practices open the whole time. But now Whittingham has taken a more Bronco-esque view as well, and is limiting availability.



I don't think the ability for media to see practice is the major issue. I think the fact that Utah has a player on the radio every day and BYU doesn't is a mistake. I wish BYU would make their coaches and players more available for interviews with the local stations.



The only in-season interview Bronco will do with anyone other than KSL will be during rivalry week. I believe that hurts the program. Gary Andersen was on 2 different radio shows every week last year. The OC and DC at Utah were as well. Also, Whittingham was on more often than not.



Yes, we know that they'll mostly talk in coach speak, but they can put their own message out there instead of having the radio people go off on their little diatribes.

The problem is the sports radio in Utah is openly hostile to BYU and not to Utah or Utah State.

True. Except for Alema and the Criddler's BYU after show.
