How Long is Taysom Hill's Leash?

Reports are surfacing that Ammon Olsen is playing well. So, even though THill is the starter (named so after Spring Ball) he's not above reproach and he can/could be benched.



So how much poor play will Jason Beck and Robert Anae tolerate before making a move?



I think his leash is pretty long and would take a substantial stretch of poor play for the move to happen (like four games)

Halftime vs. :utard: That is a game that the team - and specifically bronco - cannot afford to lose. If he's not getting it done in the first half, someone else will get a chance in the second half.

I would have to agree with this. Bronco is going to do anything to win this game. he knows it is an absolute must.

I totally agree. If BYU is 0-2 and losing to Utah, or even 1-1 and losing to Utah, beating Utah trumps everything else. Even if THill were to start the fourth game.

I could even see several trick plays with both Hill and Olsen in a wishbone, wildcat or pistol offense. The bye week will allow install of whatever it takes to beat the SpUtems.

I could see him being pulled for a series at almost any point, but not sure if that loses him the starter job.

I've said it before, but I'm still not comfortable with Taysom. He's the more athletic version of Riley Nelson- a run-first QB who isn't a great passer and who's injury prone.



4 TDs, 2 INTs last year. [edit] 5.98 yards per pass.



Ammon is the version of Taysom that's a slightly better passer and a slightly worse runner. But even he is still no Steve Young, let alone a Max Hall, let alone a John Beck. Not by a long, looong shot. And that does frustrate me.

Why wasn't Aug 21 an option. Olsen is outplaying Hill up until then consistently and you have to go with the best guy.

Tough for fans to know how they really compare. Coaches do. But if Olen is racking it up vs the 3rd string defense and Hill is struggling vs the 1s - Hill may actually be playing better. We do not know.

Injury prone? Can you list his injuries for me? I'm from southern Idaho and watched Taysom play football in Pocatello. I've watched him take some heavy duty hits, but can't recall him being prone to injury. Was Steve Young injury prone? Didn't he have so many concussions that he was forced to retire?

I think Steve Young could definitely be considered injury prone - especially at the end of his career.



I don't think you start injury prone, but you certainly can become injury prone. I think another injury to THill and injury prone could be used to describe THill.

Why is it that every time you try to make a point about Taysom you drop his yards per attempt? Here are Taysom's throwing stats per Cougarstats.com:

Now, while 6 yards per attempt isn't awesome, IMO, it isn't bad considering Taysom won the second string position last year after being home from his mission a week before the start of fall camp and had an offense designed to showcase his running ability and not his passing. Also 6 yards per attempt is better than your 3.99 you have said in this post and also better than the 5 something yards per attempt you have said he had in other posts.

Oh, and one more point Mars, Jake heaps freshman stats have him at 6.0 yards per attempt on cougarstats.com and he had an entire spring and fall camp competition before he played in 2010, and that was running an offense designed for his strengths. I think Taysom will be fine. If he struggles, I sure hope Ammon plays well enough for us to win though. I hope the coaches give whomever starts on day one a long leash and create an offense that gives confidence to that player. I want them to win. From what I have read "go fast, go hard" is going to help the Oline due to simple zone blocking schemes so I think it will be an improvement over what we have seen the last couple of years.

I have been a little concerned about Taysom's progress through the first few days of fall camp so far, but I do firmly believe that he'll get in rhythm and play well. That being said, I think if it's obvious he's struggling through the first half of the Utah game, you gotta give Olsen the chance to come in and save the season.

+1 on that. I have no interest in seeing 2 QB's this year. I want whoever the starter is to have a very long leash and to know it so they can go out and worry about winning instead of getting benched.



I also hope that when/if we have big leads late in the game, Anae will have figured out that we should put in a 2nd string QB to give them experiance and to see how they do. It seems like Max Hall needed a 6 touchdown lead to get pulled by Anae.

I did have the number wrong (that's what I get for posting off of a faulty memory, instead of looking it up). It was still an awful number though.



To put this into perspective, Iowa was 117th in the country last year at 5.8 yards per attempt.

I guess I'm the only one who thinks their isn't a leash.



Articles and talk have made it sound like :

A. they don't want a 2 QB system at all- hence TH getting the starter role after spring



B. TH has a greater upside.



I think its safe to say that they are both preforming at about the same level right now. SO why close down the QB competition? I think the COugars have all their eggs in the TH basket and they will ride him throughout the season regardless. If he was a JR or SR MAYBE they'd yank him out. Since he is only a Soph.. I think they have big picture front and center..



Ammon is there in case TH gets hurt.

Of course, if recent history has any precedence; and, if, THill fits the "tougher than any of us" category, then THill's leash should last until about his Sr year or five injuries, or whichever comes first. Of course, it will all be his OC's fault bc he not only "knows nothing about offense" he prefers his OC get run over by the bus.
