5 Quarters

For those who cannot quite get enough BYU football - Mendenhall told the D that the new O style will result in quicker drives and thus more drives and thus more defensive turns - 20+ extra plays or equivalent to an extra quarter of action.



So the mantra may be We Own The 5Th Quarter.

I suspect you are being a little TIC. My alternative mantras for fifth quarters would include:



"Nothing good can happen playing five quarters."



OR



"No 5th quarter shall go unpunished."



This sounds ALOT like the equivalent of Dave Roses offense. And it's why BYU Hoops has a tendency to run out of steam at the end of the season (notwithstanding the NIT success--which follows a week break, BTW).



Will there be more injuries bc of tired playersgiving their "last full measure?"



No wonder "trust" is a catch word so far. Anae is asking them to trust him. That's an interesting comment/request.



However, the link below confirms my doubts about Broncos estimation of "20 more plays on D" bc of the hurry up O.

I don't understand why that's "interesting" to you. As a coach, your players need to buy into your system; they need to trust you and do exactly what you're asking or things won't work, especially in a real team sport like football.

A fan favorite, old whats his name from the DH, pointed out in a recent article, that Anae stole that question from Mendenhall who asked the defense the same question after he fired Jaime HIll in 2010 and took back over the defense.



What ever happened to Jaime after he collected his severance pay?

Just so long as Bronco & Anae don't coach as if they actually had a 5th quarter to play. They may play an extra quarter's worth of plays, but the game is still just four quarters long.



I don't want us down 4 with a minute to go and we're kicking a FG because our coaches think they still have another 15 minutes to get those points back. :)

Translation:

Anae: I knowyou are puking out your guts and 90 plays seems like playing a 5th quarter, but do you trust me? I know Coach 2J is barking like a junkyard dog as am I; and I know Uncle Webber was a nice guy, but he is gone. I know we didn't score on our first day and things feel really chaotic, but trust me. It worked at AZ and it will work here.

Hopefully this turns out for BYU the way it does for Oregon. The additional time on the field for the defense, especially when the score is in your favor, turns into significant playing time and player development for the second and even third string players. For Oregon, the bigger problem is that the first string offense is sidelined early, making it more difficult for the first string O to play long and hard when going deep into the second half of tough games. That does not appear to be a problem for Oregon's first string D.

Also, based upon my conversations with Oregon players, the additional number of plays every game keeps the second, third, and even fourth string players more involved, more enthusiastic, more committed, and more ready to take advantage of playing opportunities. As a result, every new season brings to the field a larger number of backup players who have been prepared for prime time.

That's something I hadn't thought of that could be quite beneficial going forward.

Oregon's D was my first thought when this thread surfaced as well. Looking at last season, the Duck D was just as tough, if not more so, at the end of the season, minus one hiccup game against USC.

Because no new offensive coordinators want/request their players to trust them.

Looking at the Oregon defensive stats and those of other HUNH offenses, the increase of snaps for your defense isn't as drastic. This might be due to the other teams' offenses intentionally slowing their pace to give their defenses a rest before taking the field against the HUNH again.
