Even though I think Utah is going to be really bad this year (like three or four win bad), I still think they're going to give BYU a really tough game.

I don't know what to make of Boise, but I like our chances at home against them.

Utah is the second worst team we face this year. I would be surprised if they beat more than 1 fbs team and they might not even do that since by the time they play Colorado, they might have already fired their coach. I wouldn't bet on them beating Weber State.

Utah is always a tough game, but the other choices represent substantially better programs.

Massively difficult opponent. It's all in their and our coaches heads.

I said Texas...I think we surprise them at home early in the season. Let's jut hope it't not a replica of what happened to Florida State a few years ago. We need to come out FAST and STRONG and take it to the house against Texas. Altitude and momentum with a win over Virginia in week 1 should be to our advantage.

The Utah game always scares me now. That's the only game they seem to care about (ute fans and players). They always seem to beat us with a back up QB and second stringers which leads me to believe they are more motivated. That to me is the toughest game on the schedule. Let's hope there isn't a LET DOWN after we BEAT TEXAS!! :utard:

You guys calling utah a weak opponent are kidding yourselves. utah is our toughest game every year. They are not the best opponent we play but they are the toughest. the ute coaches game plan all year for BYU because they know that if they beat BYU they usually keep their jobs. Just go back to last years sched and look at how they performed against us vs what they did against their other opponents and you well see that they overachieved against us significantly.

btw, I voted Boise State

Utah did not play great against BYU last year, and typically does not play great vs. BYU.

Utah had 245 total yards against BYU last year. Their 3rd worst performance of the year and the worst performance at home by far. Their 10 penalties against BYU was tied for the 2nd most total and the 112 penalty yards was their 2nd most in any game this year. Even with the help of Tushaus' snap Utah scored below their overall season average vs. BYU. As bad as BYU's offense performed, Oregon St., Northern Colorado, and Washington St.'s offense performed even worse vs. Utah. Even their punting was the 2nd lowest total in terms of yardage vs. BYU.

Despite Utah playing this poorly, they still won. This is why I feel the BYU-Utah rivalry is one of the worst played rivalry games in football. Both teams usually play awful. That is probably why it is close at the end most every year. If I wasn't a BYU fan, I wouldn't watch this game, ever.

Texas has won 41 straight vs. teams outside of major conferences. I hope you're right that we will surprise them, but the track record over the last 20 years suggests that BYU will get beat in this game.

But we are a major team, not part of the G5.

We are a mid-major. When we stop acting like a mid-major, we will possibly remove that stigma.

A major does not give 2-1 and 1 and Done, and unneutral site games in droves.

We deserve to be a major, but we do not get treated like a major.

PS. I picked Utah the last 3 rounds. I do not buy all of this stuff about them beating us but we had the better athletes and team.

Based on objective 3rd party rankings, they out recruit us lately. They put more players in the NFL. They usually have more speed even though that requires recruiting of athletes that would not even come close to meeting BYU academic and HC requirements.

BYU and U - lately - are very comparable teams year in and year out. The disparity in recent records and rankings can easily be reconciled to SOS.

KWhitt knows his back is against the wall. There is desperation on the Hill masked as "refocused" and "determined." A win over BYU with a schedule that looks like he can squeak out barely two other wins, saves his job. period.

If ever he has targeted a "must-win" game, it is this year. And because he knows these games are ugly, mostly defensive battles, he will be uglier, more aggressive, more mean and nasty this year than ever. D is his strength, his wheel house, and he wil put his trust in Nasty D and low-risk, ball control O. He will treat this like "do or die" bc if he loses to BYU and gets PASTED by majority of PAC and ends up 2-10, ITS OVER!!

The only variable that keeps Utah game from being BYUs toughest game is the bye week before. Bronco has two weeks to prep and that has been a good thing record-wise.

I previously thought Wisconsin was not Going to be one of BYUs toughest two games, in rebuild mode, but on the road in Big 10 land, plus national pundits rankings and all you CC posters aren't even giving them a sniff....this is between Texas and BSU. I picked BSU only slightly over the regrouping, all-to-soon to be defunct and dehorned, Mack-led Horns. BYU came so close last year to beating BSU, they have some payback and smoke and take down the Donks in Cougar Town. But UT is next, followed by a very closely matched U, Wisconsin, and ND. ND takes a step back this year.

Gosh very hard to say U is in our toughest three games. :-(

I agree with a lot of this except for the main point that Kwitt is on the hot seat. He won the Sugar Bowl for them and has the built in excuse that they're transitioning to the Pac12. With all of the problems Chris (not a superbowl champion) Hill has with his athletic department, he's not going to fire Kwitt. Maybe if the basketball team continues to improve but right now the A.D. has struck out multiple times on basketball coaches and had serious issues with some other sports.

With that said, the boo birds will be out in force up there and I can see next year being his last if it doesn't get turned around.

Utah may beat us this year. And they may only get another win or two. If they do - perhaps a few of us will be humble enough to realize that BYU is probably not 1 bit better, if as good as - Arizona.

If we fail to beat Utah in Provo it will simply be that once again a Utah team that will not be bowl eligible due to having a much tougher schedule is actually slightly better than us.

Strange that I am the optimist in the bunch. BYU has a 50/50 shot vs U in Provo. Their odds vs everyone else left to be selected from are less than 50/50.

And BM is not immune to fan and booster pressure. I do not think he relishes the thought of being 0-4 Vs U.

KW has probably been scheduled right out of having a job. Beating BYU will not save his job if he cannot be competitive in PAC.

U is going to have a miserable season that will take the heart right out of this team. 2014 will be more of the same. A token win over BYU will not change that reality. An upset win over USC or Oregon meshed with 3 or 4 other conference wins would.

Big bowl wins are getting more faint in the rear view mirror. Dr Hill may only be able to resist so long the gnashing of Ute fans teeth that will happen if they lose to BYU. If the fans turn, it will take a miracle win somewhere else to quell the rational reasons to consider replacement, let alone the fans irrationality. But if they beat BYU, fans will be far more forgiving and tolerant of a VERY difficult schedule--far more difficult, according to pundits, than even BYUs schedule.

Utes will not go bowling--again, and may face a disasterous year. If they lose to BYU, KWhitt will be squarely on the hot seat.
S
SpiffCoug
KWhitt may not be on the hot seat today, but he's got at most 18 games before it gets REALLY hot.

He's going to lose seven games this year - at a minimum. That will make two straight years of not going to a bowl. That will be a third straight year of a losing record in conference.

So going into the 2104 season, he'll need to start showing significant signs of improvement or he's done. He's got 1 1/2 seasons to figure out how to win the PAC12 - something thus far he hasn't shown he knows how to do.
