My "Guarantees" for 2013

It seems like every year starting mid-July and usually ending about the 3rd week of the season, I am ALWAYS convinced that THIS IS THE YEAR for BYU football. This year is no different. And in the Spirit of the Church of the Undefeated Season, here are my "Guarantees"** for this year:

1. BYU wins at least 2 out of 3 of this year's "Big Games" - UT, ND and Wisc.

2. BYU absolutely dominates :utard: , both on the field and on the score board, like we haven't seen since 1996, and wins by 17+

3. BYU finally gets the BSU monkey off of our backs - and the game isn't really in doubt in the 4th quarter.

4. WHEN BYU goes undefeated, they are IN the NC game.

5. Fans are reminded of what it is like to use a dominate passing game to set up a very good run game - reminiscent of BYU teams in the mid-80's.

6. By the end of the year, BYU fans are in love with Kafusi like they were with Ziggy last year.

7. :utard: has a 9-game losing streak, starting with OSU the week before we beat the :utard: out of the :utard: s.

Did I miss anything?

BYU' s big games have to include more than just the three you listed. Any game versus a BCS team is a big game.

Texas, Virginia, Georgia Tech and Utah are also in the big game category. Boise St is also likely in the big game category.

I would respond that I expect dominating victories against uv and gt and because they are not at the level of nd Wisconsin and ut that I place them in a lower category. On paper the toughest -and most visible- games on our schedule are those three.

Also, in recent years byu has been successful in beating teams like uv and gt, but have not been able to win the "big games" - and my guarantee #1 is that will change this year.

Reconcile #1 and #4.

In the Spirit of the religious theme cited - no further comment from me.

Agreed, we shoudl dominate both those games, but any BCS team is a big game. The fact that Virginia is a poor team actually makes it a big game because you can't afford to lose it.

The 3 biggest games to local recruits are 1-Utah, 2-Utah State, and 3-Boise State.

Notre Dame, Texas, and Wisconsin are the big national games.

Georgia Tech and Virginia are steps below those.

Already noted. Still ever so slightly inconsistent with the religious theme. No room for reality in The Church of The Undefeated Season.

I'll be honest. the only games that i really think are must wins are the utah, boise state, and to a lesser degree notre dame. utah is our most important game of the year unfortunately. but this what bronco and co get for losing to them so often the past few years.

I agree that the :utard: game is a "must win", but see Guarantee #2 - that one is already in the bag. So while it is a "must win" (just like the Idaho St game is a "must win"), it is not one of the "Big 3" games.

If we beat Utah and have a winning season this season will be a success.

True. That would be a successful season. I am hoping for more than a successful season...I am hoping for one of those SPECIAL seasons like 84 or 96.

Since when did beating the :utard: and barely having more wins than losses equal a successful season? That would be a (barely) tolerable season. In my mind a 10-win season would be a success, and anything between 7-9 wins I'd tolerable. 6 Windsor fewer and/or losing to the freaking :utard: s an out right failure.

Speaking of just regular season wins, seven wins is the fewest I'll accept.

I'll be okay with eight wins.

Very happy with nine wins.

Ecstatic with ten wins.

Strains of Handel's Messiah Hallelujah Chorus would likely eminate from my house if we won 11 games.

And I would spent way too much money if we won 12 regular season games getting myself to the National Championship game.

Who we beat this year is so much more important than our record. To me I am biased toward the idea of national perception and long-term recruiting. We have to beat teams like ND and Texas on the national stage, especially when they are down. So far we are have squandered these chances in recent history despite the fact that we had a few of these games in hand. That just can't keep happening. We need to get to Boise's level where fans, media, and even casual fans expect us to beat the big boys whenever they play.

Looking merely at our record is not a progressive measure in my opinion and should be scrapped for a more practical evaluation of the program at the end of the year, especially with this schedule.

This is just about exactly what Tom Holmoe was quoted as saying in the Tweet Box yesterday. He described 10 wins as a very good season and 8 or 9 as a good season and even said more losses could be a good season as long as we do not blow games.

If BYU fans want to get to BSU level - the formula is simple - should be easy to remember - they stole it from BYU - they played 8 WAC games per year since they were in the WAC. Then they played usually exactly ONE big name opponent OOC. Never more than TWO. Some years NONE. The big name opponent was focused on - but being a big name opponent, had other games it needed to focus on.

The BSU schedule steps up slightly in MWC plus a decent OOC or two. As such, expect fewer undefeated seasons in the future. The math is simple.

Since I sat down with myself and decided that is what I wanted. You don't have to want that or even agree. It's just the minimum I need to say this season is a success.

If we have a losing season, or we lose to Utah, this season will be a failure for me.

BSU level? Psssh. Who wants to sit at the head of the little kiddie table! With a few remarkable seasons playing the type of schedules holmoe has been putting together -and says he is continuing to try to put together - BYU recruiting can continue to elevate to the point where I want to be - competing year in and year out with the Ohio states and the USCs and the Alabamas and whatnot. Who wants to be a cute little Cinderella story? WINNING big time games with a big time schedule will give byu something that Boise has never had - true respect as a legitimate big time program worthy of consideration on a national level. I don't aspire for my beloved byu to reach the level of some jumped up truck driving school in a mediocre town in a mediocre state. I want BYU to continue along a trajectory towards legitimacy. That is why anything less than 10 wins this year is not a successful season. In my mind, an 8 or 9 win season is a major disappointment. And that is why I have issued guarantee #1 - that we will win at least 2 of our 3 truly nationally relevant games - because we have too!
