Take this for what it is worth. I acknowledge that it is anecdotal but I believe the source to be credible.



I had the chance to meet Rafael Cruz the other day. He is an amazing man with a great life story. He escaped Cuba as a young man and has done very well for himself. He is the father of Ted Cruz.



Anyway to the point: He said that he had spent quite a bit of time on the border talking to ranchers and border patrol. He said that the majority of people coming across the border illegally are no longer hispanic. It seems that now the majority sneaking across the border are middle easterners and asian girls.

Actually, one of the conservative talk show radio guys said that statistics show that more hispanics have fled the country over the last five years than come in and that the whole immigration thing is a red herring.



He attributed the flight to two things. One, the economy is terrible, so illegals are having a hard time finding meaningful work.



Two, hispanics are not as good of Catholics anymore (they are now practicing birth control), and it is a whole lot easier to support one or two kids in their country than five or ten. I thought both points were very interesting.



In sum, if you want to stem the tide of illegal immigration just have a terrible economy. :D

What a great privilege to meet Mr. Rafael Cruz. I envy you. I personally would have considered that an honor.



The border? What a mess. There is a solution. Sadly, Washington DC does not have the will power - along with enough U.S. citizens that are ambivalent. The chaotic border kerfuffle drags on ad-nauseum. I have no confidence it will be resolved.
