Totally agree. Love Indy.

Indy may not work for all schools, but right now it sure is a good fit for the Cougars.

Like the quality of teams that BYU is scheduling and the venues played. If BYU can win consistently, hopefully the Bowls will see positive benefit of including them in picture. By all accounts, we are getting the exposure and are being noticed by recruits and non-BYU affiliated fans.

As much as I love the idea of moving to Pac12, Big12, Big10, etc., does anyone really think we'd fare significantly better that Utah/TCU have? The first problem with Indy, scheduling, has clearly been overcome as demonstrated with this year's schedule which is more than enough imo. So now, BYU can make a schedule that balances risk with reward as we want it. The other problem, bowl game scheduling, will likely remain a problem for a while, but I think I can live with it; it's not any worse than in the MWC and I certainly like our bowl prospects better this year than those of Utah, possibly TCU too.

Independence makes more sense for BYU than any other option. BYU is too unique, too different, different values (Sunday games, etc), to fit into any existing conference unless BYU creates that conference and it's partners and its guiding values (MWC). No conference is going to give up Sunday play just to accommodate BYU, forget it, it will NEVER happen. More and more conferences are playing more and more games on Sunday. BYU remains the lone exception to Sunday sports--in the entire world. And it has Family Home Evening (Monday) scheduling to consider, and general conference weekends. All other conferences laugh at accommodating any of this, they will never change, never give in; at least not just for BYU.



So we should all embrace independence, it's here to stay. Big12 and Pac12 are never going to invite BYU with all its unique values and demands. Anybody still believing BYU will get such an invite is not living in reality, they're in some dream world.



And why would BYU ever give up independence anyway? more control, more money, more exposure, more televised games, more BYUTV stuff, more sports replays on BYUTV. I just can't imagine why anybody ever want to go back to the restrictive and oppressive conference world.

Independence is cool and all, but there are reasons why playing in a big boy conference would be preferable.

To me the biggest difference between BCS and non-BCS is the starting point of the two. The most important benefit of being in a big boy conference is if you have a mediocre year but most of your starters return the following year you are very likely to start out the season with a great shot of getting into the big game whereas being thought of as mid major you have to go nearly undefeated or undefeated the first year to get even a sniffle of a chance in year two.

A basketball schedule of Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, and Texas is pretty persuasive. I'm pretty happy with football independance but the other sports could really use the Big 12.

I don't know that our basketball team would fair well against that Big 12 schedule.



It would improve attendance at home games for the first couple of years, but if BYU doesn't win, then it doesn't really matter who we play. Wake Forest has an awesome ACC basketball schedule every year. And routinely gets double digit losses on the conference schedule...and stays home in March.

Another thought. Since we have to create a 12 game schedule and we just went indy with lots of future games to schedule, don't we get a lot more announcements of games and attention?

Wow. It seems that the prevailing attitude has swung toward Indy. It is preferable. It's just harder for Tom Holmoe and the bowl game will suck until BYU earns a Big bowl invite.

It was a big uptick over the MWC boondoggle. It is far better than being an Arizona State or now Utah or TCU or Iowa State--far better.

But is it a "BIG SUCCESS"? I wouldn't go that far yet. A Success? yes, so far. BIG improvement? yes.

TCU is picked ahead of Texas this year in the Big 12. TCU is going to be fine. The difference between Utah and TCU, is that TCU had better balance to their team. It's also why I'm pretty sure, during most seasons, BYU would have been better equiped to move to Big 12/Pac 12. Utah has/had a great defense, and only an ok offense at the MWC level. That will not cut it in a big boy conference. You have to be able to score in those leagues, and Utah just can't. TCU, on the other hand, had a better defense, and a pretty dang good offense.

And they are based in the Texas recruiting zone.
