scott715Watched the Hawaii game at http://www.byutvsports.com/filmroom/watch/?id=0b640256-6478-40b0-a090-a4b5267cd1e7 " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Hill looked pretty good throwing the ball. Even some deep balls. I think he will do alright this year. Expect him to be better this year with all of the reps and experience he has been getting in the camps.

frdbtrSurprisingly, I thought the USU game was a more impressive showing than the Hawaii game. Obviously usu had a better defense. While Hill made some rookie mistakes, he took good care of the ball and made it possible to win that game with our defense. I agree that he is going to look much better throwing this year because of the reps he has been getting.

SpiffCougThe USU game was a more impressive showing.
Against Hawaii, Hill's PER was 127.9. Outside of the BYU game, opposing QBs' average PER vs Hawaii was 130.3. Hill threw for 26.8 fewer yards than Hawaii gave up too.
But against Utah St, his PER was 125.1 which was 22.4 points HIGHER than USU usually gave up. He also threw for 44.8 yards more than USU usually allowed.

SpiffCougHill's 22.4 PER points better than USU defensive PER was BYU's 3rd highest above the opponent's defense PER in 2012. The two better games were Riley against Washington St (+24.1) and Lark vs New Mexico St (+24.6).

scott715Watching the USU is next on my to do list. I want to see if he could throw the deep ball and it did. Most were pretty close to completions. One caused a pass interference which does not help your PER score.

A pass interference call does not affect PER. A flag for PI results in no official play being run. So a pass attempt that draws a PI flag does not count as a pass attempt.
S
scott715Correct and if he did not grab Hoffman, a long pass play would had been completed improving the PER.
C
Cougs_RuleWhat about the running stats and pass attempts? Wasn't the run more focused on in the Hawaii game? I'm trying to recall.

SpiffCoug54 rushes, 24 passes.
But when you win 47-0 and the game is never close, and they never stop the run (7.3 ypc that game) tough to determine what BYU was focusing on.

This is my point exactly. Kind of apples and oranges to compare Hill only on PER for these two games. How can anyone criticize PER when attempts matter and BYU is running almost 70% of game? I like PER. It is a Valid and consistent indicator/predictor. But this context seems to reveal its only weakness. It was a blow out as a game. But the PER doesn't paint that' picture. Or am I missing something?

SpiffCougTHill's PER by half vs Hawaii:
1st Half 116.83
2nd Half 150.05
So he was actually better in the second half throwing the ball when the game was already well out of hand. 16 of his 24 attempts came in the first half. So the less he threw the more efficient he was. His PER that game was really hurt by the INT. Without the INT - the game is still a blowout but his PER would have been 140.04 (if you take away the INT and the attempt). Quite respectable. (It would have been 133.37 if you just took away the INT and had it as an incompletion - still right at the standard.)

I agree with this 100 percent. he showed he can play smart in that game. he managed that game just as he needed to in order to win. his drive at the end of the half when the coaches let him go also showed he was capable of being aggressive. but you could tell he was following his coaches.
that game to me was more impressive than hawaii. i agree.

BroncoBotHill is going to be fun to watch in 13 no matter how you dice it. His first half drive to put the score on USU was a thing of beauty. The near comeback against BSU, the great game against hawaii. Good stuff, all of it. He's been in some pretty difficult situations and did well. Hopefully he learned from another unnamed QB and through his own injury that sometimes it's better to take a knee as time expires.
