DdawgLast night I was at work in Pomona, Ca, and my cell started ringing around 7pm. Friends in the fire biz were telling me a wildland hot shot crew had been burned over - 18 to 19 dead in AZ. They weren't sure of the details. This is awful news and a lightning bolt for folks in the fire fighting community.
I found out by 9pm that a friend that I work with, Joe Woyjeck, had a 21 y/o son on that team. His name was Kevin, and he had been killed in the blaze with his crew. They are a tight and wonderful family.
I would hope that we would remember the surviving family members in our prayers. I understand at least 1 crew member has 4 children. I don't know how many were married. But they all had families. This group of hard charging guys were trying to protect peoples homes by establishing fire lines when the winds shifted, and an angry fire ran them down.
There is lots of pain surrounding the loss of this stellar crew.
