The next Tim Tebow

I know we're not sold on Hill because of recent QB struggles and new coaches, but the media is very high on him.

The next Tim Tebow. His name is Taysom Hill, and if he played for an SEC team instead of BYU, he’d already have the Tebow-like billing. He has the game, he has the frame; only a knee injury midway through last year—at the end of his second career start when BYU was running out the clock—kept him from a breakout season.

There was another non-Utah media that was very high on him too (can't remember though).

I am trying to temper my excitement for Hill because of the offensive changes I want to see what happens on the field, but Hill can be very good. As far as comparing him to Tebow, you can't see what kind of a heart a kid has but Hill has a better throwing motion and is faster than Tebow. He isn't quite as big.

If Jim Harbaugh wanted him enough, that's good for me!

Tebow didn't need a great arm or delivery with the Oline and speed and skill positions surrounding him. Same with Jonny football. JM will not be as good this year. is Oline is rebuilding and the SEC will be ready for him. And his head and behaviors have gotten a little out of hand.

But yes, THill has that potential--if he can prove that he can deliver the ball consistent enough to keep defenses honest, then yes, BYU can have its own Kaepernick, Tebow, Manziel--like, LIKE, player.

Keep in mind, HE IS THE FASTEST GUY ON THE TEAM. And while BYU is not known for a ton of speed, that is saying something. It's why it trumps Ammons apparent passing superiority.

Then there is the durability factor as well. Here's hoping. It's why I think this season could be very special.

Taysom will blow the doors off in games this year if - we can protect him - keep him injury free. Tall orders. I'm a T. Hill believer.

The protection and how he's used is very important. If that is in place the sky (pun intended) is the limit.

No that we don't have a OC that has the QB running around outside the pocket every other play, my hopes for Hill have increased. We may actually get a full season out of him.

Assuming Hill doesn't get injured, I suspect by his Junior season he'll be quite the force.

He's still pretty young. I wouldn't be surprised to see some great level of play and then some Nelson/Heaps level of play as well. I think he'll be somewhat inconsistent.

My respect for Bronco was diminished a bit last year. Ok, he loved Riley, but the guy could not throw the football, and he played him when any coach in the country would not have been playing him. It wasn't like we had no other QB who can play.

And allowing a running play on the last play of game we had won--inexcusable.

And his two point decision, and the way it was handled, at Boise also still bugs me.

These were not great coaching decisions. But it appears that Bronco has turned all offensive decisions over to Anae. I do think Anae is smart and inexperienced enough to not make some of the bonehead decisions that were made last year--whoever made those decisions.

If Anae can develop an Oline, and his offensive scheme works, I think Hill can deliver the ball and the scores and the success he needs to, to be a great QB. If he is only better than average, we should have a pretty good year. If he is great, we'll upset some really good teams this year.

You would probably agree that Ty Detmer was great. Go look at the games starting the day he won the Heisman. Hawaii, A&M, Florida State, UCLA, and maybe Penn State iirc. BYU went 0-5. Then throw in another loss or two later after some WAC wins, and 2 Ties, and that is how BYU Rolls vs the only schedule I recall that was comparable to what 2013 will bring.

I'm not seeing how those two seasons and this season compare, nor how Ty Detmer got involved here. Just because it was BYU then and BYU now does not make them comparable whatsoever.

Bib just like to diminish Detmer's career. He's big on an there being an asterisk by Detmer's Heisman. He's big on Detmer sucking against great teams.

But I think both points can be correct. In those five games Bib likes to cite (the five immediately after the awarding of the Heisman) that BYU lost, Detmer struggled in part because he had little help from the OLine.

In those five games, Detmer was sacked 19 times. He was sacked 14 times in the three games in 1991 (FSU, UCLA, Penn St) and just 21 times in the remaining 10 games.

In those five games, he had no run support either. Versus A&M, BYU had 21 rushes for -12 yards, Versus Florida St it was 19 for 33 yards, versus UCLA it was 32 for 57 yards and vs Penn St 29 rushes for 0 yards.

So yes, if, like golong was saying, Anae can help develop an OL he stands a good chance of developing Hill into a great QB. But if he can only develop the OL to play like they did with Detmer in that five game stretch - no run or pass blocking - then yes, BYU is going to struggle.

Respectfully disagree. BYU is BYU. Some things have never changed. In the very best of QB times, we have gone undefeated only once and never vs this level of competition. To say that if our QB is great this year guarantees a special season is no less naive than the BYU fans that expected RY detmer to roll all of those great teams. It could happen. Long shot. Very long.

BYU will seemingly always have a shortage of athletic players (African Americansto be blunt) and a lack of depth and that will almost always take a toll vs these opponents. Kicking game is also a queztion this season. OL ????? TE ???? FB ?????? Backup QB ???? DL ?? CB ???

Yes. I hate Detmer. Young, McMahon, Sark, Wilson, Doman, Hall, Beck, and all of the other great QBs that struggled vs really good opponents. They all did. My point exactly is that the issue is a team issue.

Aren't you guys leaving out the most important variable (hate to break your linear, A causes B; simplistic, if not misnomered analysis) but didn't Detmer suffer two separated shoulders in the Hawaii game? That was the first game--the very weekend of the Heisman announcement--after he won. BYU Got killed, Detmer was very limited. Then the key Oline support that helped him beat the Miami's and a great season, thinned out and team dynamics changed for the following year.

No, the arms were injured vs Texas A&M. Detmer and the defense just stunk that game. Detmer completed less than 50 and had four INTs. And the defense gave up 650 yards of offense.

I remember the A&M game, their defense was in our backfield all day and he did separate both shoulders at separate times that game. A&M was trying to hurt Detmer and the fans were terrible. They took a lot of joy in him getting wounded. I had no ill will toward them prior to that game, but have had little respect for them since. They exemplified classless in that game.

The Hawaii game thy just tore us apart. We played flat and hey payed motivated. Shows you how far emotion can carry you in a football game. Maybe bronco can add that to his arsenal somewhere (I actually think he does, but doesn't act like he does - definitely doesn't take advantage of emotion like other teams do, ie Utah)

Iirc, Detmer separated 1 shoulder vs UH and then separated both vs A&M in the Bowl Game. BYU was heavily favored vs UH, but did not know what hit them.

I thought he separated his non throwing shoulder against Hawaii as well, but I wasn't sure I remembered correctly or not so didn't mention it. I don't think a perfectly healthy Detmer could have done anything for that Hawaii game, they completely blew us away. It was a full on team collapse.
