utah is BYU's toughest game every year. BYU needs to look at it that way every year. utah coaches mark BYU down on the calendar every year, they game plan for BYU all off season because they know that as long as they beat BYU they will most likely keep their jobs even if they have a losing season in the Pac 12.

Here's a prediction for you. If utah loses to BYU and has a losing record again this year in the pac 12, Kwhit is sent packing. If utah beats BYU and has another losing season in the pac 12, he gets another year.

That was a detailed and lengthy article about the state of Yewt football. It does not sound real encouraging for the Yewts. I hope the Cougs can have it together and pull off a W in their home crib.

Go Cougs!

I'll say it again. Kyle Whittingham won't be the coach of Utah in 2015. He's going to lose at least seven games this year and next year as well. They won't go to a bowl game after this year and when it becomes apparent they won't next year either he could be fired.

The Utes are in real trouble with their move to the PAC12. And Whittingham is going to feel the brunt of it.

They jumped into the PAC riding the success coattails of a coach who is no longer there, what did they expect?

Bingo! The Yewts jumped into the PAC-12 thinking they had cut a Fat Hawg in the arse. Wrongo bongo. They thought it would be a recruiting and money bonanza. Surprise - not so fast. The A+ PAC-12 players are still going to Oregon, Stanford, USC, UCLA, Washington, etc. Yewtah is a distant after thought - if at all - for the quality of athlete that it takes to win in the PAC-12.

Reality bites - hard. If only the Cougs can kick the Yewts in the teeth in Sept. 8)

And whether any of you like it or not, BYU would have faced the same fate and may still yet if they land in the Big 12. Look at TCU. AND both TCU and Utah have owned BYU for the last eight years.

Oh ok. But only on this one point and only for one night. I hate it on this site when people start spooning......like Spiff and Hawkwing.

I don't disagree. We dodged the proverbial bullet. Our recruiting would have improved a little, but it is a very small pool we recruit from in the first place. And while we have competed and beaten the top talent in the Big 12, that was one game, not week in and week out.

It is better to be able to give us a respectable schedule that we can handle--being able to put bye weeks in front of tough weeks helps to take on the challenge.

Besides, I kind of like being above the fray of all this conference realignment craziness. Where I used to be for inclusion in the Big 12, mostly just to rub it in the Ewet's faces, I think the better path is to stay independent, beat the Ewet's in our next few games, and consistently end up with better seasons than them (with the occasional BCS game and hopefully a shot in the four team playoff during the special years).

A few more years of Pac10 obscurity and all Ute fans will have to smack about will be "money"--like we care and whether or not they beat the Y. In fact, I predict a resurgence of Y over the U bc recruiting is going to start to falter as the U slips into increasing levels of obscurity.

Wow! this has evolved in to a depressing thread of the mindset of cougar fans.

I think BYU also would have struggled in the PAC12 - especially with our crappy QB play the last two years.

But I think BYU would have a better conference record right now. Why? Because Bronco doesn't lose to 2-9 teams at home. At a minimum, BYU would one game better in conference play.

This is where I have to disagree.

Let's play a little game of "what if". What if BYU entered the PAC, and Utah had stayed in the MWC? Pipe dream, I know, but let's examine.

First, Utah recruiting in the state of Utah would have gone in the crapper. Every top LDS kid would have chosen BYU and PAC football (Langi, Hansen, etc.). I can name them all, but there is no point. None of them consider a MWC Utah team. which is what they would be, because Utah had no chance at making it as an Indy.

Second, BYU gets an immediate bump in the LDS talent pool out of Utah, especially with Utah in the MWC. As in the best 4* kids want BYU (Tevi, Salt, Lutui, others). I get some will still go out of state, but BYU would not lose them to Utah, let's be honest on that. Maybe a couple diehard kids, but not the borderline fence kids, which chose Utah due to PAC. BYU would win those.

Third, BYU gets more looks from the right non-LDS kids as well. This would not be many, but a few per class. (Orphey, etc), Bronco is still making great strides in this area, but it would have been made easier with PAC.

Fourth, Utah get no looks from the kids who are not LDS and want PAC football. Their classes would have dropped off like crazy because MWC did not move the needle for them with recruiting. They still might win in the MWC, but they would not be big recruiting players.

This assumes BYU is in the PAC, Utah is not. If BYU get Big XII, the discussion is slightly different, but it still gives BYU a nice bump, but Utah would still be a viable option with PAC play. Essentially, Utah is only on the map due to PAC affiliation. BYU is still on the map even with Indy, due to the LDS influence.

BYU might have taken a couple years to get there, but they would due to increased recruiting. Utah has now had the 2010-2013 classes to improve in PAC, and it aint happening yet. Even with missions, BYU would be better off.

I disagree. TCU would have been decent in the Big 12 last year had their QB not been a complete moron. They are predicted to be between 2 and 4 in a really good Big 12 this year. TCU has a better coach than Utah and has the Texas recruiting advantage. It also helps that they were loaded before going to the Big 12.

Yes, and that's what ALOT of Cougar fans would do after several seasons of 4-6.

Just not the 4-6 rival who can't make a bowl game?

So, let's, see, making the jump to BCS hasn't helped Utah and a hasn't helped TCU. Huh, looks like a pattern.

Further, couldn't BYU argue that it "would have been decent" if they didn't have its own sort of moron at qb? And Stuckin, you only supported my point unknowingly rather than support your own. The fact that TCU owned BYU and clearly was a better team, for almost a decade, but can still only finish in the bottom half of the Big 12 in down years and ""MAYBE" finishes 2-4 in a good year, as you say, just proves mine and Bibs point.

Lawboy, I usually agree with ALOT of your stuff. But I have to disagree with your disagreement.

Your first premise just does not hold water. I would argue that at least Half the recruits n your list that you didn't list don't qualify either ecclesiastically or academically. Your proposition that they would come to BYU is they were in the PAC presupposes that BYU is winning and looking good. They would not. It is a myth and fantasy to think that BYU would. They haven't for Utah. And look at how obscure and absent of national media Utah has become. I would argue they had more in the MWC bc they were nationally more relevant.

Same for point two--some of those top recruits are just not going to qualify ecclesiastically. And it's more than one or two.

Point three might be your strongest point. I agree.

Point four is also suspect. Utah would get who they were getting. Kids who might have been passed over by PAC schools who wanted to play now and not sit or who has a point to prove. They actually may be a better team--and they were then--in the MWC than they are in the PAC--just like BYU would be.

The BUMP is a myth and fiction most BYU fans have hanged their fantasies on. And it is just too big of a risk to use as a justification for making the leap into a BCS conf.
