New Recruiting Philosophy

So there have been 26 offers to the class of 2014 with probably around half of them having been to BYU. The geographic breakdown is 12 from CA, 4 from UT, 3 from AZ, 2 from TX and KS, 1 from GA, NV and LA. Only one JC recruit so far.



It would be nice to have a few more games scheduled in CA, particularly Southern CA.



The guys I think are most important are Damien Mama, Andrew Mike and Peyton Newell. If we get those guys and the class we have already I'll be happy.



Has BM spoken at all about no longer requiring the recruit to come to campus before getting an offer? I haven't seen anything like that but I like the new development there.

What's interesting is that most of the athletes being recruited play dual positions, play other sports (baseball, track, basketball), have a yearning for a religious school with good academics and strong moral code (if not LDS) and have good GPAs. There is a pattern being established and emphasized more strongly this year with our coaching staff in areas where they recruited heavily (CA, TX, AZ, WA, OR). It is also worth noting that their Poly connection is also are major focal point.

I'm sure everyone here saw the recent big DN feature on Utah and the poly pipeline. This article gave the impression that Utah gets whoever they want and kind of has a corner on the top poly football players. Anyone done a comparison between the players Utah gets and BYU? and the number of poly players who play for Utah vs BYU?

BYU has more Ploy players than any school, except Hawaii. So BYU has the numbers,



However, Utah has put more Poly kids in the NFL over the last 10 years. And BYU needs to turn this trend. Ron McBride made Utah relevant by recruiting Poly kids, USU is doing the same right now.



BYU just needs to do better at getting the cream of that crop. We did from about 2007-2010, but Utah might have for 2011, 2012, and looks like 2013 as well.

I don't know of anything he has said recently, but I do know the original policy applied to non-LDS recruits from out-of-state, not to in-state or LDS recruits.
