Summer Rumblings

Seeing some things on twitter re: the team thought I would pass on. Not giving sources, just sharing some info.

First, hearing that Taysom aggravated his knee injury, and that slowed his recovery. He should still be healthy by fall ball, but it raises the issue of the long-term stability of the knee and possibility of future knee issues and missed time. Obviously, you never know with knees. Some guys get surgery and are good to go, others like Staley, have repeated issues. So lets hope Taysom gets it healed properly long term.

Next, hearing that Tanner Mangum may not end of serving a mission and could be on roster for 2013. No clue whether he redshirts or not. Considering that he was supposed to leave a year ago, and then in the next little while and still may not be leaving means it is likely he may not serve at all. No judgments from me, just pointing out that he may be a freshman in 2013, not in 2015. Word is from camp is that the D thought he was either best or 2nd best QB they faced. Best in terms of accuracy.

Last, heard that the summer workouts are going well and dudes are serious about them and working hard.

That's too bad about Tanner I hope he makes it out (not only for himself but for the football team as well). I was surprised out how hard they were running Taysom on the few spring highlights they showed.

If Mangum doesn't go on a mission, where does he land in the rotation? I would like him to redshirt for a year, sit for a year, then have a chance to go full steam...not repeated mistakes of Heaps.

He's already been in the program for a year (he grayshirted last year). I would think at best he would be third string though but I think if we needed him we wouldn't see a repeat of Heaps.

That would be nice, if it's true. Don't remember hearing abt Heaps absenteeism until much later...

I've heard that Heaps hasn't been to any of these team workouts this year either ;)

Taysom needs to avoid riley's mistakes. If he doesn't olsen, stewart, mangum are all great back ups. qb spot is looking great.

with all the reps mangum has been getting it seems to me the plan all along for those in the know wasthat he probably wasn't leaving. there is no other explanation for the large amount of reps he was getting when our number one guy was recovering from a serious knee injury.

2 or 3 QBs will see the field in 2013. We have essentially ZIP QB experience all the way around, a rebuilding OL, and a fragile starting QB. Exactly like last year - but less experience at starting QB.

Wrong wrong. Not just like last year. We actually have QBs who can throw the ball.

Yes. This explains spring ball reps. I had heard he wasn't going but didn't have legit source.

This TIC on Heaps pretty much matches the viability of the claim in the first place.

We had Hill and Olsen last year too. We had Lark and Munns. We had Kuresa. We even had Mangum available as a grey shirt. A veritable stable of QBs - some of whom are the very throwers you are talking about.

Olsen has experience running the scout team. Stewart has played. Hill has played. they are all more experienced than our qbs were last year. the qb situation this is year is way better than it was last year. just taking riley nelson out of the mix is an automatic upgrade in and of itself.

You keep using that word--grey shirt. I do not think it means what you think it means--based on your description of him as "available."

He greyshirted in that he underenrolled for the Fall Semester, which allowed him to participate with the scout team, but made him ineligible to play that season, allowing him to keep all five years of eligibility. One of the hallmarks of a "greyshirt" like Mangums is his unavailability.

Olsen played a year at SUU before his mission.

He was there and a decision could have been made to pull the shirt if Coaches felt he was needed. Olsen was redshirted. That, too, could have been changed if coaches felt he was needed.

Let me be more precise--Mangum did not have enough credit hours during the Fall to be eligible to play. The only way to pull the shirt would have been to add classes to his schedule by the add/drop deadline of September 10th--at that point we were 2-0 and putting up 37 points per game.

After the 10th, there was no way for BYU to pull the greyshirt--he was ineligible for the season with no way to cure the ineligibility, and playing him would have been an NCAA violation punishable by forfeiture of every game he would have played in.

Again, I do not think it means what you think it means.
