I was just reviewing our roster for the upcoming season.

IMO our starters will be

Carlino

Haws

Collinsworth

Austin

Mika

Our main backup guards will have to be Winder, Skyler Halford and Frank Bartley.

Our backup bigs are Sharp and Worthington.

Note that the only players over 6'5" on Collinsworth(an RM), Sharp(really thin), Austin (foul prone), Mika (freshman) and Worthington (freshman).

We still have a couple of scholarships left now that Delgado, Ambrosino and Harward have left. We desperately need a backup center and another forward.

I am very concerned that we won't be able to rebound/defend the paint. Unless Mika or Worthington are flat out studs on defense and the boards we could be in for a long season.

On the bright side we will have one of the best if not the best point guard and scoring wing in the league.

Bronco might not be happy but we might really need Kaufisi back on the team.

The only other big man who has mentioned interest in us is Jamal Aytes a 6'6"225 PF.

Will Sharp be healthy?
Q

We better hope so.

I just want us to play man so we can rebound better and get out and run more.

That was the main difference in our play from WCC to NIT play. In the WCC we tried to play half court with teams. In the NIT we said screw it, let's take our chances in getting out to run.

As much as I would like Austin a nd Mika to start, that won't happen. Mika will sub in for Austin.

I see a lineup of:

Carlino

New Guy

Haws

Sharp or KC

Austin

We desperately need a 2, which is why Rose has focused on recruiting so many guards as of late. While a backup center would be great, I don't see us picking one up. Maybe another 4 or legit 3 so Haws can slide to the 2.

Do you think this lineup will be able to rebound? Austin is too thin and so is Sharp. Collinsworth had some bulk and I assume he still has it. But before you can doing anything you have to be able to rebound.

College teams in general have terrible offenses-which means there are a lot of missed shots.

Not as well as a lineup with Austin and Mika on the court at the same time. Again, I just think this is the lineup we'll see, not the one we'd like. It took Rose the entire 2013 season to realize he should start Austin and Davies together. Maybe he's learned? I hope so.

Hey......we can all hope that Sharp has somehow found a way to pack on the pounds in the off season can't we?

If he was going to pack on the pounds, he should have started lwith a full off season. I doubt it will ever happen.

Mika is better right now than any center we had on the team last year--he will start, and Collinsworth is better by far than Sharp. Collinsworth with start, Mika will start...and maybe Austin. But if Austin doesn't improve, he will be only a role player. Kaufusi is worthless as a basketball player, he should not even be considered. He consistently contributed 5 personal fouls, 2 rebounds and 2 points per game. Keep him on the football field.

So, when Brandon Davies gets drafted, we can expect Mika to go higher than him down the road?

I did an analysis a few weeks ago on this. KC is/was as productive as Sharp. Actually, Sharp is a better shooter and better from the free throw line. KC is/was a slightly better passer. They rebound the ball equally well despite Sharp being a dozen pounds lighter than KC.

Given KC hasn't played ball in two years, I doubt he comes in "better" than Sharp. KC is more than welcome to prove me wrong, but to flat out say KC is better is ridiculous.

I doubt Collinsworth will start. Haws is the exception. It will be a season before KC is back to starter material. If his older brother Chris is any indication, don't expect a huge bounce back from Kyle. Sadly, Rose may still start KC, though, as Rose appears to have a bit of an infatuation with KC.

Given our limitations at Center, I doubt Rose starts both Austin and Mika. Doesn't mean I don't want them on the court at the same time; just that I don't think Rose goes with this option.

Agree whole heartedly. He shouldn't sniff the court. I'd rather play small-ball and run out opponents to death than see Kaufusi flounder around in the paint.

This raises a couple of questions for you given that you clearly do not think Rose knows which players to play or in what configuration and combination.

1. Just how bad of a coach do you think Dave Rose is? Who would you rather have? Is it time to fire Rose?

2. Do you still think BYU Basketball is on the rise in light of your feelings about Rose and players like KC?

Ironically, when I first called you on this "on the rise" mantra, I contended that they were on the decline ever since Jimmer graduated. They were. The evidence is in - based on results.

Further irony, I think BYU will bottom out in 2013 if they have not bottomed out already, and be on the slow rise in 2014 and then accellerate that rise in 2015 and beyond.

I don't think it's a question of how "bad" Rose is; it's a question of how "good" he is. I like Rose. I like his style of hoops and overall I think he's a good coach. Probably the best BYU can get at this juncture. I don't think he should be fired. Under him we made 6 consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament. That's never happened before with BYU hoops.

That doesn't mean I don't think he can improve, though.

Last season he clearly went with the wrong lineup. It should have been the NIT lineup of Davies, Austin, Haws, Zylstra, and Carlino all season long. While I hope Rose learned from his 2013 blunder, I have no reason at this point to suspect he has.

IMO, it's quite simple. The five best players should be on the court. After that, you figure out your bench. Rose doesn't usually go with this approach particularly when it comes to his bigs. Hence, I don't see Rose starting Austin and Mika at the same time.

Rose also has his favorites. He's not as loyal to them as Bronco, but he still has them. Cusick and Zylstra got way too many minutes. Way too many. As a result, athletically superior players warmed the bench. KC is one of Rose's favorites. I realize I'm in the minority, but I don't think KC is all that and a bag of sugar. Yes, I think Sharp is better than KC right now.

Do I think BYU is on the decline? No. Do I think they've hit a speed bump? Yes. One season of missing the NCAA tourament after 6 consecutive appearances hardly qualifies as a decline. On that same note, Jimmer and one Sweet 16 appearance in the last 30 years hardly qualified as a rise. As a whole, BYU is trending up from where it was 10 years ago. We hit rock bottom in 1997.

We've got some good players coming in and as long as Rose avoids a half-court offense I think we'll be good to go.

Help me get these two statements you just msde straight

Zylstra should have been a starter all season long

Zylstra got too many minutes due to being Coach's Pet.

Seems like more inconsistency.

My take on the trend of BYU basketball is that it has been a roller coaster ride since before my time and will continue to be one after I am dead, dead, and gone.

We are who we are.

Stan Watts was a great coach and had a great run for a very long time. A Jordan High School guy according to my 83 year old mother. He won the NIT when that meant something - ended up nationally ranked in about 1966 or so at #5 - right behind Utah at #4, and UTEP who was known as Texas Western back then who won the National Championship.

There was a similar peak back around the time I was born - 1951 or so.

Danny Ainge. That was another peak in 1980ish timeframe.

Roger Reid had some great years - followed by the season he started 1-7 and got fired. Team was winless after that.

Steve Cleveland, brought BYU out of that pit, but never really achieved greatness.

Dave Rose brought BYU back to former glory - peaking in Jimmer's senior season. Things have declined further each year since that.

We are who we are. There are cycles of talent and experience.

I would put Dave Rose, Roger Reid, and Stan Watts as the best Basketball Coaches BYU has ever had. So, lets hope Rose fixes the talent trough that evolved post-Jimmer and that the experience builds from there and gets us back to the good times again.

I do not think the program is on the rise or decline taken over the totality of Dave Rose career. It peaked with Jimmer. It dipped 3 years and running. It will probably bounce back. But I do not anticipate a NC any time soon.

The NIT lineup was a much more effective lineup than the juggling act Rose had going on during the regular season. Particularly with Austin coming off the bench for Davies. That was my main point. Zylstra averaged over 25 min a game. He should/could have played less.

We're more aligned than you probably think, Bib. I'm not looking to pick a fight.

I don't think BYU will ever win a NC in hoops. Takes a lot of player talent and coaching talent, plus a fair amount of luck.

I agree, Rose hit a spike with Jimmer. Doesn't mean we can't get there again or exceed it. But, Jimmer has been gone for only two seasons, so BYU has "dipped" for only 2 years. Next season hasn't been played yet, so the verdict is on whether the dip is "running" is still out.

One of the reason's I like Rose is he plays a style of ball that aligns well with what's available to BYU - skinny guys that can run and shoot. We got away from that last season. I also think between CC's injury, Rogers' injury, and Winder's season-beginning injury Rose did a good job with what he had last season. Had even Rogers been available that would have allowed Haws to play the 2 and given us another shooter on the floor. Would have been a whole different season.
C
Cougs_Rule
Uh, like it or not, Kaufusi brought the beef. Of course he was limited, but in conference play, there has to be some beef.

Gunk may be right about not starting Mika, on paper, but he will be the best BYU has and find himself with ALOT of minutes. Worthington as well. Austin cannot hold the post and patrol the paint any better than Davies and probably worse.

Sharp will not gain weight. Doesn't have the body style. Belongs at the three and Haws at the two.

I think Rose learned some things late about lineups. I believe he will apply that knowledge this year. Problem is two freshman bigs and KC back from a mish. Depends how quickly those guys get up to speed.
Q
Qman
I don't see how Haws at the 2 is a good thing for us. Many 2's in college at quick 6'2" guards who are good shooters. I believe Haws would struggle to stay in front of guards and get around screens. I believe Haws best position is at the 3. Now if we have 3 who can guard quick 2's maybe we could be on to something, but I don't see such a 3's on our roster.

I know this is backwards of my original take. But we will have to see.
