Mismanaged 5 Star QBs and Independence

BYU fans have Ben Olsen and Jake Heaps to grumble about. Both number 1 recruits. Even though Ben was a very long time ago, BYU has always been sort of independent.

ND fans have Dayne Cryst and now Gunner Kiehl in back-to-back years. Chryst went to Kansas when Heaps went, but did not have to sit out because he had already graduated. Kiehl is headed to Cinci iirc.

What is it with number 1 QB recruits. Texas had 1 or 2 leave as well. Texas is kind of independent.

And after they leave

Olsen - Flop

Chryst - Flop

Heaps - TBD

Kiehl - TBD

Never mind the Independence part. It seems to happen everywhere lucky, or unlucky, enough to get a #1 QB Recruit.

Anybody know a #1 QB recruit that transferred and then did well? And other notable flops?

IDK if Troy Aikman was a #1 when he was first recruited - he turned out fine.

Aikman left SMU when they got the death penalty, if I am not mistaken. A different reason to leave.

I thought it was Texas or Okie that let him slip away.

Rhett Bomar did okay. 4 year NFL career.

Other flops = Mitch Mustain, Rocky Hinds, and the ever awesome Tommy Grady.

Yes. Okie. But he was doing great at Okie. Broke his ankle. Barry Switzer - hate that guy - switched to wishbone due to Jamille Holloway being the back-up. He led Okie to NC, so Aikman transferre as he was definitely not a wishbone guy. That is the difference. He was not a flop before he transferred.

Troy Aikman was an Oklahoma Sooner. He played under Barry Switzer. Troy was the starter but broke his ankle during the 4th game of the '85 season against Miami.

Troy Aikman was replaced by Jamelle Holieway at QB. The Sooners went on to win the NCAA national title, and Holieway won the starting QB spot. Troy Aikman decided to transfer to UCLA (anything to get away from Barry Switzer ;) ).

IIRC ND is the epitome of getting can't miss QB's that missed. Nick Montana left WA for a JC Some had him ranked over Heaps

I know a star player from that UW team. He told me after Nick's first fall camp that it would be years if ever before Nick saw any serious PT at UW. He just was slow catching on to things.

I have a 5 Star theory. I saw it with a baseball player I knew. The parents had him start school a year late - common in California - to give him a size and strength and maturity advantage. Then camps, trainers, equipment. Man among boys in little league. Then they pulled him out of school for an entire year to focus on baseball. Man among boys. But when he got older and had to compete vs elite athletes his age or older, he suddenly became more human.

This happens a lot with QBs when Dad is loaded and money is no object. Kids with an entourage. But it usually catches up. Even worse if they get lazy and do not work hard - arrogantly thinking they are superior and do not need to. And they did not need to when coaching and trainers and equipment and age gave them advantage. But their marketing team promotes them and they go to a visible high school football factory surrounded by more men among boys as a supporting cast. Win a lot of games. and get the 5 star rating.

That is The Bibster's Five Star Bust Theory.

I looked it up awhile back and 6-7 of the top 10 qb's from Heaps year from both rivals and scout(not completely the same list between the two either) had transferred.

It's because it was the weakest QB class in over a decade, so each and every one of them was really overrated. Overrated in the star system since the scouting services give the top guy 5 stars, and then work down from there (except for Scout.com, which I believe had no 5 star QBs that year--Heaps was a 4-star), and overrated as to the schools they are offered. Schools have recruiting plans that specify we need to sign up x QBs this offseason, so they go out and get the best they can. That year they were fishing in shallow waters, so many of the "top" QBs of that class went to schools where, despite their star rating, they had to compete with higher level QBs from the class before and after them for starting spots, and they just weren't on the same level talent-wise.
