Single Best Moment of BYU Football

I have a tough time distinguishing from the Staley Down the Sideline and the Answere Prayer. I have never heard a louder stadium than when Staley scored. So because of that, I'll let everyone pick two.

Us old timers need at least 5 votes before we even get to the U games.



Miami - won Heisman for Detmer - plus greatest win ever



SMU - McMahon - better Hail Mary than Flutie. Capped incredible comeback after many fans had left the stadium or turned off the tv and gone to bed.



Michigan - Bosco - NC - limping all over the field after cheap shot.



Missouri - Young - beat a very good ranked team at the gun



Kansas State - Sarkisian - Only New Year's Day win. Ranked opponent. Dramatic finish.



Utes - Beck - Answered Prayer



Utes - Staley - the incredible, injury cursed beast.



Utes - Hall - improbable win in an ugly performance.



And there are probably more. A & M, UCLA, Pitt, SDSU, Okie, etc. Some payback games and big name blowouts Like UW, Texas, Okie, Oregon, Oregon State, etc were a lot of fun.

I have to go with the 1984 Holiday Bowl even though I was 3. It won us the National Championship! I'd put the Miracle Bowl next followed by the Cotton Bowl which is undervalued as we were punked by the voters.



I still can't remember any time when stadium was louder than the A&M game.

There are two or three great plays from 1984 that beat out several ones on the list, Hawaii and Pitt particularly come to mind- both of those plays are better than either the Feterek, or Las Vegas Bowl UCLA gems.

I didn't read the instructions until after I picked only 1. I picked 06 Beck to Harline. I wasn't interested in BYU football in the 80's and was on my mission during the Detmer years so If I were to pick my second it would have to be Staley in 01. Any win over utah puts it up a notch and those were two big ones. 01 kept BYU undefeated until the Hawaii debacle and 06 was the end of a 4 year nightmare with utah.

Hawaii yes. Incredible defensive play saved that game and kept us in the NC chase.

Maybe you could make this choice easier by qualifying it with the best moment of a game you attended.



I wasn't at NC game. But that has to be the top. Take away that NC and it would be the biggest takeaway of all those big moments.



And yes, the 84 Hawaii game where Kyle Morrell went over the top of the line, tackled and salvaged the undefeated season was amazing!! I was actually there, while on my mission. our MP got us tickets! But it would still fall in line a few after the NC game.



The second biggest BYU legacy takeaway, if a play didnt happen has to be the Miami game. The Tyeisman was huge. Can you believe that I sold my ticket so I could watch replays on TV? I lived one block away from the stadium and ran out of my apt during the game hearing the crowd go wild after the amazing play.



Tie for third--McMahan and Young.



4th has to be Beck to Harline. UNBELIEVABLE!! I was there in the north east stands, row 20 amidst the heathen, drunken Utes 100 feet from Johnny. The juxtaposition of my elation and Ute fan disappointment, surprise, and anger was priceless, BETTER THAN ON TV by far.



5th Kyle Morrell in Hawaii. I was there.

6th Staley down the sideline. I was there.

7th A&M- kealaluhi where he shook the ball in elation after the catch. I was there. Only time I have ever stormed the field.

8th-max hall to George (in an otherwise crappy game). Royal blue jerseys. Great moment. I Was also there.



Maybe KVNs bowl game moments will make that list someday.

Never has a poll caused me so much chagrin. Those were all great moments. I would have liked to see the defensive goal line stand against Oklahoma mentioned (although it wouldn't get many votes). But it wasn't a single play - just a series of four gut-wrenching, palm-sweating, exuberant moments.

Yes - the defense gets taken for granted relatively speaking. Maybe that will change.

It won't change. Football is an offensive game. People come to watch offense.

If KVN causes a fumble, picks it up, and falls into the endzone or pick 6s at the right time and place it might get remembered. Like last year - end of ND game. BYU wins at Top 10 ND. BAM. Or right after the 2 point conversion failed vs BYU. BAM. BYU wins on the Blue Turf. Or right after the clanked field goal at U. BAM. Or all of the above.



But part of the problem is that defensive scores that win the game usually do not come right at the end where all of the drama gets remembered. Big defensive stops to preserve a lead or to get the ball back do - but those are less memorable.

It works out that way. You cannot come from behind without scoring. Also, scoring at the gun seems to be better rembered than scoring early.



Example. BYU scores in 1st qtr on dramatic play. Defense pitches a shutout or holds opponent to two field goals or a td and failed kick or 2-point conversion. Nobody remembers that first qtr score. As an example, I do not remember how BSU scored last year. I would guess - Pick 6 since that happened a lot. I just remember our failed conversion. Our loss. Thus no heroes in a moral victory.

My nominee--the building sensation of anticipation each year at the first home game as the kicker raises his hand and approaches the football to kickoff the season.

#1 Miracle Bowl. I know my dad and other old-timers would pick this one simply because it's the most insane comeback in college football history (I think).



#2 Miami. This game was on ESPN and is still our biggest win in program history (kinda sad) and highlighted the best QB to ever play at BYU. This game put us back on the map throughout the 90's imo.

Detmer was "one of" the best. Best - IDK. Young and McMahon were pretty good.
