OT: Utes sports problems continue--this time Rugby

Provo, UT — The biggest game on the rugby calendar in the state of Utah has been canceled today due to university violations by the University of Utah rugby team.



No specific details have been released as to what violations were made by the Utah rugby program, but University of Utah officials have suspended the rugby team from playing the 2013-14 season and reportedly put the program under long term probation.



BYU head coach David Smyth said he was disappointed at hearing the news directly from the University of Utah administrators who informed him that this Friday’s Wasatch Cup match could not take place under any set of circumstances.



“The timing of the news is obviously not good,” Smyth said. “Our boys are definitely disappointed at not being able to play against our rivals, the University of Utah. The Wasatch Cup is a big deal here in our state and it not only hurts both of our programs to not play this game, but it hurts rugby in general here in Utah. It’s a sore and sad day for both programs.”

What kind of violations would warrant suspending the team for the entire season and facing long term probation? Dr. Hill has more explaining to do.

It is flagged as OT--you didn't have to click it. ;) Though I guess an admin could move it to Other Sports and it would fit in fine.

Isn't rugby a club sport at Utah? If so, Dr. Hill is likely not allowed to have any oversight of the program. I think rugby and men's soccer are similarly run in Provo.

Well somebody has oversight because "university officials" suspended the team from playing their season.

If I'm not mistaken, student affairs oversees all clubs, so this would fall on whoever is in charge of student affairs: Vice President Barbara H. Snyder.

Pretty sure this a health matter--rugby is such a rough sport and they play without protective gear. ;)

this actually has quite an impact on byu and the sport of rugby given the crap that is going on with the ruling bodies.

News Article - Gordy Monson IIRC, referenced recent Rutgers coach firing and AD resignation and new and previous Auburn issues and Penn State and concluded that if Hill knew about swimming coach abuses and did not act - he will not be likely to survive. New Trend. Firing the coach is not enough.



Then predicted that a new AD would have unrealistic expectations for football and KWhitt would soon be history.



Called this new trend an over-reaction, but predicted it will bite Hill if he had knowledge.



This may be why many Ute fans think Gordy is a BYU Homer.
