BYU Hires On-campus Recruiting Coordinator

Geoff Martzen has been hired as Football Player Personnel & On-Campus Recruiting Coordinator.



A native of Reedley, Calif., Martzen comes to BYU after serving as a recruiting specialist at Boise State and Alabama, and as a high school football coach.

Interesting news. I guess this is the reason Dick Harmon had an article today about Brandon Doman joing his family business with his dad and brothers. I wonder if Doman was offered.



Does Martzen have any BYU connection?



What does a recruiting specialist at Alabama do anyways? Do they baracade the door to Sabans office from blue chip recruits hoping to sign with them?

Get the impression he will help to systematically organize and track the recruiting effort while striking a balancing act between identifying players planning on serving missions, RMs, JCs, etc. and open spots to be filled.

Doman was not coming back to BYU for a recruiting/administrative job. The Harmon story just notes the culmination of something Doman has been putting in place for weeks/months.

I think the coordinator is also going to be looking for kids to recruit. He'll be watching a lot of tapes and talking to HS coaches.

For the most part, it appears to me that in hiring this year, Bronco & Co has gone more with experience. Maybe the Doman & Cahoon steps of taking staff with no experience at what they are being asked to do, besides personal experience (as a player), has taught BM to rely more on experience. Just my two cents

If he is just an administrator or film reviewer this is a poor hire. This position has the possibility to advance BYU athletics. This should be a whole department, not just reviewing film but trying to figure out what distribution of JC vs HS athletes works best reviewing all the available data. I think they ought to hire or at least have an OrgB consultant like the pro teams do.

He will run the dept and find kids to recruit. Wider pool of kids than the coaches could do.

I wonder if he would have recruited Jake Heaps?

Of course he would have. I'm more interested in how many jc olinemen he would have recruited rather than hs kids.

I hope so. Jake was/is a highly talented LDS kid who expressed early interest in BYU. It would be a mistake if BYU hasn't tried to recruit him. They need to recruit every top LDS kid.
